US: Environmentalists, unions seek to fix gas leaks
Unions and environmentalists have found one point of agreement in the bitter debate over the natural gas drilling boom: fixing leaky old pipelines that threaten public health and the environment. It's a huge national effort that could cost $82 billion. The issue of fixing leaks has all sides talking nice. The BlueGreen Alliance, a Washington, DC-based group that works with labour unions and environmental groups, is also working with utility companies, state legislatures, and Congress to raise awareness and seek funding for the repairs.

Wages in Britain grew at their fastest rate in six years during November, a labour market survey indicated on Monday, providing a rare signal that a long-term decline in real incomes is being checked by a return to economic growth. Last month starting salaries for permanent staff rose at their highest rate since November 2007, according to survey data from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and consultancy KPMG.

World unites for global icon Nelson Mandela's memorial

Huge crowds of grieving South Africans converged on Soweto's World Cup stadium Tuesday, to sit side-by-side with presidents, priests, queens and sheikhs at a memorial service for unifying global icon Nelson Mandela. Close to 100 world leaders were among 80,000 people expected to cram into the venue in Soweto -- the crucible of Mandela's anti-apartheid struggle -- to bid farewell to a man whose life story earned uncommon universal respect.
President Pranab Mukherjee reached Johannesburg with Indian delegation, which included Congress president Sonia Gandhi, to South Africa for the memorial service of the anti-apartheid icon.
In a departure statement, the president said he was leaving with sadness for the memorial service to be held in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
The delegation accompanying the president includes commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and MPs Sitaram Yechury of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Satish Chandra Mishra of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as well as senior government officials.
Five hours before the memorial began, large crowds had already gathered in a light drizzle, hoping for one of the first-comer tickets.
Wrapped in the South African flags or yellow-green coloured shawls printed with the slogan "Mandela Forever," they danced and jogged towards the stadium entrance, some singing in Zulu: "Mandela is not sleeping, just kneeling."
Thousands more were boarding free trains from central Johannesburg, mixing excitedly together on the platform and in the compartments -- men and women of all ages and races.
"I am going to the memorial to be closer to the national mood, to come out of my bubble," said white Afrikaans speaker Marcel Boezaart, 26.
News of Mandela's death at his home in Johannesburg on Thursday resonated around the world, triggering a wave of loving admiration from political and religious leaders, some of whom agree on little else.
Global rivalries put on pause
The presidents of the United States and Cuba are among those who will share the memorial stage, pausing rivalries that date back to the Cold War to pay tribute as millions around the world look on.
The event is part of an extended state funeral that will culminate in the prisoner-turned-president's burial on Sunday in the rural village of Qunu where he spent his early childhood.
Some 11,000 soldiers have been deployed as part of a massive security operation to ensure order as South Africans grab their final chance to unite in a mass celebration of Mandela's life ahead of the more formal lying in state.
The Indian and Brazilian presidents will also deliver eulogies Tuesday, reflecting the extraordinary global reach, popularity and influence of one of the 20th century's towering political figures.
Four of Mandela's grandchildren will speak for his family, while neither his widow, Graca Machel, nor his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela are listed on the programme.
Some 120,000 people were able to watch the event on giant screens set up in three overflow stadiums in Johannesburg.
Although Mandela had been critically ill for months, the announcement of his death was a body blow for this recently reborn nation.
He had been out of public life for more than a decade, but South Africans looked to his unassailable moral authority as a comforting constant in a time of uncertain social and economic change.
'He really was like a magician' On the eve of the memorial Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu described Mandela as a "magician" who conjured a united nation out of a country teetering on the brink of civil war. "Everybody was saying we would go up in flames," he said. "He really was like a magician with a magic wand, turning us into this glorious, multi-coloured rainbow people."
A single candle was lit Monday in Mandela's tiny prison cell on Robben Island, where he spent the harshest of his 27 years in apartheid jails, before emerging to lead his country out of the shadow of apartheid into a multi-racial democracy.
On Monday, his eldest daughter Makaziwe Mandela told how her father spent a "wonderful" week surrounded by family before he died.

Aries March 21 to April 19 The most positive thing about this week is that you shall be in the right mood to take on all the work that is being heaped on you, predicts Ganesha. This means your creativity shall peak, you shall possess great clarity of mind, and combined with your optimism, it is bound to lead you to success, in the terms that you shall easily achieve all your targets for the week, even if they may seem too high. You will not only be functioning at your peak, but shall be pushing your frontiers further and further. However, there is a slight chance that you may get derailed from your work, but that is only if you start taking too much interest in helping out others also in completing their tasks. Ganesha therefore advises you to first meet your own targets and then only see if you can help others.
Taurus April 20 to May 20 You shall be overflowing with zest and enthusiasm this week, and Ganesha predicts that you shall sail through it effortlessly. Whatever fate may throw at you, you shall handle with utmost ease, and succeed at it. But don’t make the mistake of expecting the same level of competence from other members of your team, as not everyone is cut out the same way. And your determination to achieve your goals by any means fair or foul, could end up backfiring on you. So while it is good to be a go-getter, temper your attitude with a bit of caution. Although you shall be mostly preoccupied with your work, you shall manage to squeeze out some time for your near and dear ones. You will manage, also, to sort out certain domestic issues which have been pending for a long time.
Gemini May 21 to June 20
Ganesha portends that this week you shall be very determined while chasing you goals, and you shall be able to focus on them single-mindedly. As a result of your hard work, you are likely to gain monetary benefits, and in addition your professional prestige too is likely to rise. However, your communication skills are not really up to the mark, and to really make an impact, or even to make people recognise the labour you have been investing in your work, you need to brush them up. Perhaps you could take a crash course in effective communication, or even in public speaking in order to improve your self-confidence. This is something that can even impact your personal life, as it can lead to misunderstandings with your spouse. Improving it therefore assumes even more importance.
Cancer June 21 to July 22 Ganesha assures that you are going to have a very productive and enjoyable week at the office. You may expect full cooperation and support from your co-workers. Even your bosses shall have great regard for your ideas and opinions, and seek your assistance in crisis situations. All this respect shall greatly boost your self-confidence, but Ganesha warns that there is also the danger that you may get over-confident. So be pragmatic, stay objective and do your own analysis of the prevailing situation. Also you would do well to remember that it is not so difficult to achieve success, as it is to sustain the same level of effort that was needed to achieve it. Students need to remember that the time is not right for going in for advanced studies. However, this week is auspicious to buy property.
Leo July 23 to Aug. 22
Owing to a change in attitude, you shall now start thinking of the long-term needs of your family, and Ganesha says it is high time too. You need to invest your money in such a manner that whether it is the advanced education of your children or any other anticipated or unanticipated event, you are not taken unaware. In short, make sure that your and your family’s future is secured and that you shall have enough financial resources in the case of any emergency arising. Talking about your children, make sure that you give them proper guidance on selecting their career by taking into consideration their inherent talents. Under no circumstances should you force your views on them; just guide them as to what is best for them, and let them take their decisions themselves.

Narayana Murthy dispels doubts over Infosys 3.0 plan

BANGALORE: NR Narayana Murthy said there is room to bolster revenues from Infosys' products, platforms and services division, a unit that was perceived as being relegated to the background after his return to the company six months ago.
While announcing the launch of a new software platform TradeEdge, Murthy who returned as executive chairman in June, said there is an opportunity to derive much higher revenues from the PPS business, compared to traditional services such as developing custom software for corporations and maintaining their computer networks.
"Our desire is that products business will help improve our per-capita revenues," Murthy said. TradeEdge is Infosys' third software platform aimed at retail firms in emerging markets.
It is used by over 10 clients, including Procter & Gamble. For the Bangalore company, the PPS unit contributes about 6% of sales.
In 2011, Infosys said it expects to get at least one-third of its revenues from PPS over the next five years.
Products and platforms are an integral part of Infosys chief executive SD Shibulal's 'Infosys 3.0' strategy which focuses on deriving higher revenues from innovation and intellectual property rights.
Murthy said while it is difficult to say when PPS will contribute 30% of revenues, the company's attempts are certainly moving in that direction. "These are the instruments that will drive the growth."
He said faster economic growth, proliferation of mobile phones and rise in the amount of data in emerging markets will drive the growth of TradeEdge, which is aimed at connecting retailers with their distributors in emerging markets such as Asia Pacific and Latin America.
The new platform, which is being used in over 70 countries, will facilitate faster on-boarding of distributors to retailer networks, improve product order management, and reduce wastages, according to the company.
Analysts, while being optimistic, are taking a wait-and-watch approach to its attempts at driving more revenue from its products division.
"This is just one platform.
We will have to wait and see for a couple of years whether this will become as big as they think," said Sandeep Muthangi, vice-president at equity research firm IIFL Institutional Equities.
"Infosys product business has been doing reasonably well. This could result in some traction, but one product alone wouldn't make a significant change."
Incidentally, the launch of the new platform comes at a time when analysts say the company has been moving employees from units such as Finacle, Infosys Labs and PPS to billable projects.
In June, Murthy had said Infosys will refocus on bread-and-butter business. He said the PPS business is certainly open to acquisitions.
PPS global business head Sanjay Purohit said two of the 10 clients who use TradeEdge are using it in India.

Asthma: Facts, causes, treatment and prevention
The prevalence of asthma worldwide is around 200 million with a mortality of around 0.2 million per year according to a consensus statement developed under the World Health Organisation - Government of India Collaborative Programme (2004-2005)."Though the prevalence is more in the developed countries, the developing countries have a higher total burden of the disease due to differences in population. In India, the estimated burden of asthma is believed to be more than 15 million", points chief scientist Dr. Sharad Kasarle, DSK Nutrition Research Center Pvt. Ltd.
Facts about Asthma The most common chronic disease among children, it currently affects 235 million people. Symptoms may occur several times in a day or week in affected individuals. Failure to recognise and avoid triggers that lead to a tightened airway can be life threatening and may result in an asthma attack, respiratory distress and even death. Through appropriate treatment the number of asthma related deaths can be reduced. The strongest risk factors for developing asthma are exposure to indoor allergens such as house dust mites in bedding, carpets and stuffed furniture; pollution and pet dander; outdoor allergens such as pollens and moulds; tobacco smoke and chemical irritants in the workplace. Asthma triggers can include cold air, extreme emotional arousal such as anger or fear, and physical exercise.
Alternative treatments for Asthma Asthma sufferers may lessen their need for chemical treatments prescription medications (steroids) and inhalers through lifestyle and dietary changes and nutritional supplements. Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, indoor and outdoor pollution, and common allergens such as dust. Avoid food additives and processed foods. The diet should emphasise whole, organic foods as much as possible. Avoid artificial food additives, flavourings, and sweeteners; fried foods; and pork. Avoid nitrates/nitrites and sulphites. Many asthma patients are sensitive to these substances and should avoid foods containing such additives. This may include deli meats and cheeses, hot dogs, bacon, wine and beer. Include a balance of aerobic exercise, resistance training, and stretching or yoga in your workout routine. Try to avoid exercising in cold, dry air, and always warm up with at least 10 minutes of lower-intensity exercise. Supplement with Omega-3s. Fish oil and flaxseed oil, both excellent sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, may help decrease inflammation. Get plenty of antioxidants through diet or supplements. They decrease free radical activity, which tends to stimulate inflammation.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22 Financial matters are likely to dominate your life this week, foresees Ganesha. You may not be satisfied with your financial situation, and are likely to look around for some additional ways in which you can make some more money. Since your expenses are going to mount, you need to immediately cut out all the frills and spend money strictly on essentials. You shall have to continue in this manner patiently, because the rewards of your efforts may take a long time to come. The people who are involved in creative fields are likely to have a great time as the planets are in their favour. On the family front, there are chances of getting into a heated argument with your spouse, but Ganesha advises you not to lose your temper and handle things delicately.
Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22 You shall be at ease this week as far as your business is concerned, predicts Ganesha. However, as far as expansion plans are concerned you shall have to be very tactful in both raising resources as well as in seeking support and guidance from people more experienced than you. In your domestic affairs, the fact that now you are being more open-minded, compassionate and understanding about the needs of other members of you family, especially your spouse, shall add to the all-round happiness. However, Ganesha warns you to be careful of people who are just making a show of love and affection for meeting their own selfish ends, and seek out the company of only your genuine well-wishers. Also, you need to control your temper, especially in office, otherwise it may adversely affect your work.
Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Ganesha foretells that this week your hard work shall bear fruit, giving a big boost to your self-confidence. You shall feel very positive about everything around you. However, don’t take your health lightly. You need to get even minor ailments such as a headache or a toothache, checked properly. Since the stars suggest that your health may be delicate, you would also do well to start exercising – simple skipping or aerobic exercises will do. If you can do yoga and pranayam, it would be even better. Also, stick to home food as far as possible and totally avoid junk food. Even while at work, be careful not to undertake any stressful projects. While driving you shall have to be careful, as this week there are chances of a mishap taking place. However, these are generalised predictions applicable for your sun sign.
Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21 You shall be preoccupied with getting your tasks prioritised this week, especially as you can no more afford to carry on in the haphazard manner that you have been doing, as your work pressure is increasing and you need to get tasks accomplished in the order of their importance. Ganesha advises you to keep your distance from legal issues, more particularly if you are based in foreign lands, where you may find it very difficult to extricate yourself once you get entangled in them. On the health front, some niggling ailments may keep relapsing and it may take you very long to recover completely. All things spiritual may draw your attention, but you would do well to keep your distance from esoteric things. As for finances, cut down on superfluous expenses.
Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
You will be making rapid progress this week, foretells Ganesha, and adds that you shall still be dissatisfied with it and will be in a hurry to accomplish everything in double-quick time. Be warned, though, that such impatience can backfire. You shall not get a single moment free to think about your family, and will feel annoyed if you get a call from home. This week, Ganesha says that you shall be open-minded about a job change, so if a lucrative opportunity does present itself, you shall consider it quite positively. You need to be very careful of avoiding arguments, whether it is at home or office. As for your financial affairs, even if you are facing a liquidity crunch, it would be better not to borrow any money but to manage with what you have.
Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
Your work pressure is going to increase this week, foresees Ganesha. However, since you are feeling very spirited and full of energy, you shall be able to accomplish all the tasks that may be piled up on your plate, and then some. You shall therefore have enough time to spend with your family members, thus giving satisfaction on both personal and professional fronts. You are likely to feel a bit low during certain phases in the week, but they shall be few and fleeting, so there is nothing to worry about them. On the financial front, you shall be rather comfortable but you will keep thinking about how to invest your money in more beneficial ways.
Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20 Ganesha predicts that you shall be happy with the way your career is progressing, and yet you shall be looking out for better prospects. However, this week you are unlikely to be offered another job, so just stay put where you are and keep pegging on sincerely. Ganesha advises you to review your goals and your strategies for achieving them. You shall be feeling happy and contented deep inside, but being a little superstitious, you shall try not to let it show, as you fear that jealous people may try to mar your happiness. Health is going to be a bit delicate, so take very good care of it. If you are already on medications, do not neglect them and do not stop mid-way even if you start feeling better, because if you don’t complete the course the illness may relapse.

Zaheer should have played in ODIs, feels Ntini

JOHANNESBURG: Makhaya Ntini, South Africa's second highest wicket-taker after Shaun Pollock, believes that one of his contemporaries could have made a difference for India in the ongoing one-day series.
"Where's Zaheer? Isn't he in the side?" Ntini asked TOI during a chat on Monday. When told that Zaheer is only in the Test squad, Ntini was surprised. "Why? He is still your best bowler, he should have been there for the ODIs as well," he said.
The man who took 390 wickets from 101 Tests feels that Zaheer should look to guide the new crop all the time. "He should act as a mentor. His experience can be invaluable for the boys."
According to the former South African paceman, it's Zaheer's experience in South African conditions that can hold the key for India in the Tests. "It's a lot about the length that you bowl on these pitches. Zaheer has played quite a few matches here and he knows what's the right length on tracks like these...He troubled us a lot the last time they played here," Ntini recalled.
Zaheer missed the first Test match of the last series that India played in South Africa in 2010-11. India lost that match and in the next two, the left-armer played a stellar role, taking 10 wickets, as the visitors leveled the series 1-1. "Zaheer should be used the way Anil Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan were used towards the latter stages of their careers...His presence can truly make a difference," Ntini added.
Another thing that the iconic black pacer was a little surprised about was the fact that Ishant Sharma has not been able to seal his spot in the Indian team yet. "He has been playing for a while and he looked a really good prospect when he started off...I would have expected him to be the leader of this pace pack by now," Ntini added.
But where is Ishant going wrong? "It's the length. In India, it has to be a bit full, but when you are in South Africa, it needs to be back of the length. But there's no point going overboard and bowl too short, the South Africans are fantastic players of the short ball. It's a thin line but Ishant should have known it by now," Ntini quipped.
The paceman said that the Indian bowlers should go and talk to the South African pacers, who are just reveling in the home conditions. "The South African pacers love such pitches. They can help the Indians out." When one wondered if the South African pacers would oblige, given the intense rivalry, Ntini laughed out loud: "Then ask them to call me."
'Madiba a big influence' Nelson Mandela had a huge influence on Ntini's life as he fought back from his difficult past. "It's not that I personally knew him very well, but I always looked up to him. His life was a guiding light for me," Ntini said.
Ntini still recalls his meeting with the President before the 2003 World Cup. "His words, his compassion, his energy - there was something magical about the man. I feel sad, just like any other South African, that he is no more."

" INSPIRING STORY "
The Ship of Friendship
A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island.
The two survivors who have been a good friends, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s parcel of land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island.
He considered the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”
“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”
“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”
“He prayed that all your prayers be answered “
