Indian Dacia Duster might be launched in Malaysia

The Romanian based automaker Dacia might launch the Indian-made Duster in Malaysia sometimes next year.

With the Dacia Duster going on sale in the United Kingdom from January 2013, the carmaker is currently looking for new markets to sell its cheap vehicle and one of those markets which might receive the SUV might just be Malaysia. But the Asian country won’t get an European made version and the one which is expected to be launched there will be produced in India and it will probably arrive with Renault badges all over its body.

Unfortunately we don’t have any more details on the Dacia Duster aimed towards Malaysia for the moment but as a quick reminder, Dacia Duster has a starting price of 8,995 GBP in the United Kingdom for the base entry-level version and the cheapest variant of the SUV is coming with a 1.6 liter gasoline engine, which is producing a total output of 104 horsepower, sent to the front-wheel drive system. If you prefer a diesel, you can choose between the two configurations of the 1.5 dCi unit, with its 85 HP and 105 HP. This version of the Romanian SUV is coming with a permanent all-wheel drive system and if you choose the Ambiance trim, you will get USB, Bluetooth and a CD player, while the high-end version, the Laureate, which starts at 12,995 pounds for the FWD, is adding leather trimmed steering wheel, air conditioning and 16-inch alloy wheels, amongst others.

Aircel told to pay Rs 5 paise per SMS to Vodafone

NEW DELHI: The telecom disputes tribunal directed Aircel to pay SMS termination fee of 5 paise per message to Vodafone till the matter is finally resolved by it. It also directed Vodafone to immediately restore its interconnection of SMSs generated on Aircel's network.

Passing an interim order, the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal ( TDSAT) asked Aircel to pay 5 paise, half of Vodafone's demand of 10 paise per SMS, as termination fee.

Termination charges are paid by an operator on whose network calls or SMSs originate to the one on whose network these communications end. The charges impact tariffs.

A single-member bench of PK Rastogi was of view that if SMS services between the two operators are disconnected then the consumers would suffer. agencies

"There is a need to examine whether the rates of termination charges demanded by the respondent (Vodafone) are in accordance with the regulation ... and whether such charges are transparent, reciprocal and nondiscriminatory," it said.

The tribunal asked Vodafone to file a reply to Aircel's plea within three weeks. It also granted two weeks time to Aircel to file the rejoinder. agencies

The matter has been listed for January 10, 2013 for final hearing.

In October, Vodafone had demanded Rs 40 crore as SMS termination fee plus applicable tax for the period between April 2011 and September 2012, which was opposed by Aircel.

Vodafone had asked Aircel to clear the dues within 15 days by November 9, 2012. It had also disconnected the SMS termination facility in 5 circles.

It was opposed by Aircel contending that arrangement between them for SMS services was on "bill and keep basis" and Vodafone had unilaterally proposed charging 10 paise SMS termination, which was "arbitrary and illogical".

Beauties on wheels

There isn’t any significant entity that pulls your attention to the Chandigarh Carnival that kicked off on Friday at the Leisure Valley, Sector 10. The display is more or less the same, which also includes the vintage car rally, which has always been a part of it.

As you enter the premises of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, located right across the Leisure Valley, an exhibition of vintage cars greets you; and there is certainly something that strikes you, other than the ageless beauties on wheels. You then realise that the owners of these vintage cars are senior citizens instead of jazzy youngsters.

One such gentleman, BS Manco, 69, shares about his contribution to the popularisation of vintage cars. Says the owner of two such four-wheeled machines; “I founded a Vintage and Classic Car Club in 1990 with just 11 members and eight cars. Now, we have 20 members and 40 cars. The first rally took place in 1992, which was organised by the UT Police to celebrate traffic week. Since then, the club has been quite active. Recently, in March 2012, the longest rally took place, from Chandigarh to Palampur.”

Famous Scientist

Per Martin-Löf

Per Erik Rutger Martin-Löf (born 1942) is a Swedish logician, philosopher, and mathematical statistician. He is internationally renowned for his work on the foundations of probability, statistics, mathematical logic, and computer science. Since the late 1970s, Martin-Löf's publications have been mainly in logic.

In philosophical logic, Martin-Löf has wrestled with the philosophy of logical consequence and judgment, partly inspired by the work of Brentano, Frege, and Husserl. In mathematical logic, Martin-Löf has been active in developing intuitionistic type theory as a constructive foundation of mathematics; Martin-Löf's work on type theory has influenced computer science.

Per Martin-Löf holds a joint chair for Mathematics and Philosophy at Stockholm University.

His brother Anders Martin-Löf is now emeritus professor of mathematical statistics at Stockholm University; the two brothers have collaborated in research in probability and statistics. The research of Anders and Per Martin-Löf has influenced statistical theory, especially regarding exponential families, the expectation-maximization method for missing data, and model selection.

Per Martin-Löf is an enthusiastic bird-watcher, whose first scientific publication was on the mortality rates of ringed birds.

In 1964–65 Martin-Löf was studying in Moscow under the supervision of Andrei N. Kolmogorov. During this time, Martin-Löf wrote his 1966 article On the definition of random sequences, which gave the first suitable definition of a random sequence.

Earlier researchers such as Richard von Mises had attempted to formalize the notion of a test for randomness in order to define a random sequence as one that passed all tests for randomness; however, the precise notion of a randomness test was left vague. Martin-Löf's key insight was to use the theory of computation to formally define the notion of a test for randomness. This contrasts with the idea of randomness in probability; in that theory, no particular element of a sample space can be said to be random.

Martin-Löf randomness has since been shown to admit many equivalent characterizations—in terms of compression, randomness tests, and gambling – that bear little outward resemblance to the original definition, but each of which satisfy our intuitive notion of properties that random sequences ought to have: random sequences should be incompressible, they should pass statistical tests for randomness, and it should be difficult to make money betting on them.

Ford Fiesta continues world dominance with Asian debut

The new 2013 Ford Fiesta is on a march to be a global game-changer and makes its Asian debut at Auto Guangzhou 2012 in China.

The new 2013 Ford Fiesta is the best-selling small car in Europe, has a fuel-stingy 1.0-liter engine, the latest technology and is becoming a global game-changer for Ford around the globe. The new Fiesta is making its Asian debut in the largest auto market in the world as it's being unveiled for the Chinese at Auto Guangzhou 2012. Ford is expecting big things for the new Fiesta in China and the unveiling there could launch the compact car into global status as the top-selling small car in the world.

MyKey and Active City Stop technology

The small compact Fiesta from Ford just continues to impress as it offers a fuel-efficient engine and the latest technology that buyers are looking for. It comes with Ford’s new MyKey technology that enables parents to program a key that restricts the top speed of the Fiesta, reduces the maximum volume of audio system, and even disables the audio system altogether if their teenage kids and passengers are not wearing seat belts.

It also comes with a new safety system called Active City Stop that can capture and process 15 images in the time it takes to blink. Even the most attentive driver can miss what it going on around the car and be involved in an accident. The new safety feature automatically applies the brakes and can help mitigate or prevent low-speed collisions.

A new global 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine

The new Fiesta is sure to attract Chinese buyers with its new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. The new three-cylinder engine from Ford was used first in the European Ford Focus and will be offered in the C-MAX and B-MAX in Europe later this year. The fuel-efficient engine has been wildly accepted in Europe already in the Focus, and was just introduced in the U.S. model. The small fuel-efficient engine has been highly acclaimed and gets excellent fuel-mileage.

Ford Fiesta continues global advance

Ford has experienced strong sales in China and the introduction of the new Fiesta should continue its advance in the world’s largest auto market. Ford posted its second consecutive sales record in China last month in October. The Ford Focus led all sales there and the new Fiesta could move into Ford’s number one spot next year.

Ford is counting on continued success in China, and the new Fiesta is a big part of those plans. Ford has increased investment into new manufacturing facilities with its joint venture Changan Ford Mazda Automobile already operate two assembly plants in Chongqing. The plant in Chongqing is the largest global manufacturing location for Ford outside Michigan. Ford already has five manufacturing facilities in China that are currently operating, and together with its partners, it is building five more.

Ford announces it will offer Emergency Assistance for free

Ford is also introducing the all-new Kuga and all-new EcoSport are part of Ford’s plan to broaden its offerings in China with the introduction of 15 new vehicles and 20 new engines and transmissions by 2015. Debuting in China on the all-new Ford Kuga, Ford is announcing that it will provide customers with an advanced system that automatically informs the emergency services via a dedicated call center in the event of an accident. Ford is the first automaker to provide this feature for free for the life of the vehicle.

With the introduction of the new 2013 Ford Fiesta in China, look for the compact car to be a global force that could be the number one selling car in the world.

Smartphones make up 40% of all mobile phones sold

Smartphones made up almost 40% of overall mobile phone sales during the third quarter of the current year signalling their rapid acceptance worldwide, according to a latest report. Data traffic doubled from last year and is expected to grow at annually at around 50% between 2012 and 2018, driven mainly by video, as per telecoms equipment maker Ericsson's mobility report.

The research showed that online video is the biggest contributor to mobile traffic volumes, constituting 25% of total smartphone traffic and 40% of total tablet traffic. This puts new requirements on networks to cater for quality anywhere and anytime, the report said.

Total mobile subscription is expected to reach 6.6 billion by the end of 2012 and 9.3 billion by the end of 2018. China alone accounted for about 35% of net additions during the third quarter, with about 40 million additional subscriptions. Brazil added 9 million, Indonesia (7 million) and the Philippines (5 million). Overall, global mobile penetration reached 91% and mobile subscriptions now total around 6.4 billion. Mobile subscriptions have grown by around 9% year-on-year and 2% quarter-on-quarter.

Douglas Gilstrap, Senior VP and head of strategy at Ericsson, said, "Expectations of mobile-network quality have been elevated by the availability of smartphones and tablets that have changed the way we use the internet. Mobility is becoming an increasingly significant part of our daily lives; we always have devices within arm's reach, allowing us instant access to information, entertainment and social interaction." The report further revealed that Asia Pacific (which includes India) had the largest share of the total traffic in 2012. The region is expected to increase its share of data volume from around one third today to almost 40% in 2018.

Tips to make your browser secure

MUNICH: Web browsers are the key to the internet. Without them the internet is an impenetrable black box.

Browsers may be among the most commonly used applications, but they also offer the greatest number of attack options for dangerous content on the net.To keep viruses, worms and other malware away from your computer when surfing,it's crucial to configure your browser for security.

The firewall on a DSL router is a good first step for protecting the computer during surfing, says Marco Rinne from the computer portal chip.de. But that doesn't hold true if your browser is out of date: “Internet Explorer 6 and 7 or Firefox 2 no longer satisfy current security standards,” he says. For optimal protection, he therefore urgesusers to keep theirbrowsers updated.

There are numeroussecurity tools already present in Firefox and Internet Explorer. The pop-up blocker, for example, prevents more than justannoying ads. It alsothrottles other windows that can be used to sneak malicious software onto PCs. Phishing filters protect personal dataagainst theft.

Firefox offers additional configurationoptions underthe Settings item in the Security tab of the Options dialog box: thisincludes the ability to block risky or forgedwebsites. It's also a good idea to prohibit websites from installing add-ons on their own. Similar settings are possible under Internet Explorer in the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box, accessible from the Tools menu.

Computer owners should also activate all options for warning against attacks, advises Markus Linnemann, managing director of the Institute for Internet Security (ifis) at the Polytechnic University of Gelsenkirchen in Germany. This applies in particular to warnings about suspicious content to be displayed using ActiveX, Flash, or JavaScript.

Yet the warning mechanism on most browsers alone isn't usually enough, Linnemann says. Those who wish to be especially careful can, for example, use the Firefox add-on 'No Script,' which blocks all active content of a website by default and allows the user to decide which should be permitted. The problem is that most users are unable to determine   which content represents a threat to their computer, Rinne msays.

Scientists say Google Earth island in Pacific doesn't exist

WIf you thought Apple's Maps app might steer you wrong, just watch out if you're navigating the South Pacific with Google Maps.

It and Google Earth, as well as marine maps and charts, show a feature west of New Caledonia that Australian scientists say is a phantom island.

Sandy Island looks like a gaping hole in the Coral Sea. About 16 miles long, north to south, it could make the perfect beach nirvana.

But the University of Sydney scientists found only ocean 4,620 feet deep when they went to the site while on a research expedition. The depth would preclude the island sinking.

"We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on-board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400 meters in that area -- very deep," geoscience postdoctoral fellow Maria Seton was quoted as saying by AFP news.

"It's on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We're really puzzled. It's quite bizarre.

"How did it find its way onto the maps? We just don't know, but we plan to follow up and find out."
