India, Pakistan Prime Ministers begin New York meeting

The Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan met Sunday in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, a fresh effort to improve strained relations. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif shook hands and exchanged small talk before journalists were hustled out of the meeting room at a hotel. It is their first face-to-face meeting since Sharif was elected in May. Speaking at the UN on Saturday, Singh said India was committed to resolving differences with Pakistan, including over Kashmir, which is claimed by both countries and divided between them.

Iraq says Iran's shift toward West should be taken seriously

Iraq's foreign minister said Saturday that the new Iranian government led by President Hassan Rouhani offers 'the best chance after 34 years of animosity' to improve relations with the United States and should be taken seriously. President Assad says Syria will respect UN chemical weapons accords - Italian TV

Syria will respect United Nations accords on chemical weapons, President Bashar al-Assad told Italian television station RaiNews24 on Sunday. 'We joined the international agreement against the acquisition and use of chemical weapons even before this resolution was passed,' he said when asked if Syria would comply with Friday's UN resolution. 'In 2003, the UN Security Council proposed liberating this entire region from these arms and declaring the Middle East a region free of chemical weapons. RSS chief hits out at Omar Abdullah, says accession of J&K to India is irrevocable

RSS chief Mohan Rao Bhagwat on Monday said that accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was irrevocable and launched a veiled attack at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for telling a European delegation that the accession was on four matters and the state had "only acceded and not merged".

"The accession of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India is not due to the document of accession. Kashmir was ours since times immemorial.

Accession is irreversible and irrevocable," Bhagwat said. He was addressing a rally of 'Swayam Sevaks' at Parade ground in Jammu on Sunday evening.

Without mentioning the name of Omar, Bhagwat criticised the statement he made during his meeting with the European delegation.

Omar had, during the recent meeting, said that,"While all the states acceded to Union of India and then merged with it, Jammu and Kashmir only acceded and not merged. That is why we have a special status, our own state flag and Constitution.

" Bhagwat referred to the glorious reigns of Hindu King Lalitaditya and those before him while maintaining that JK was part of India since "times immemorial".

While paying tributes to the martyred Army personnel and policemen in the recent terror attack in Jammu region, Bhagwat said that it is not only Army's responsibility to safeguards our borders, "we all have to participate and contribute in our own little but significant ways to ensure that no harm befalls our motherland".

The RSS chief recalled the saying of Rabindra Nath Tagore during Bengal partition in which he had said that the path to Indian unity is through Hindu way of life.

Apple biggest brand in the world: Interbrand

NEW DELHI: iPhone maker Apple has emerged as the world's topmost global brand in a new report. Interbrand, a corporate identity and brand consulting company, has come out with the list which sees Apple on top, pipping the previous leader Coca-Cola.

Apple, which stood at No. 2 on the list last year, has made steady progress over the years in Interbrand's list, where in occupied the 8th spot in the 2011. The report has put the tech giant's value at an estimate of $98.3 billion, an improvement of 28% from last year's report. Coca-Cola had dominated the top spot on the list for the last 13 years.

Ousting Coca-Cola from the top spot has been noted very strongly by Interbrand, which made the following statement in its report: "Every so often, a company changes our lives, not just with its products, but also with its ethos. This is why, following Coca-Cola's 13-year run at the top of Best Global Brands, Interbrand has a new No. 1, Apple. Few brands have enabled so many people to do so much so easily, which is why Apple has legions of adoring fans, as evidenced by the record-breaking launch of the iPhone 5C/5S."

Apart from Apple, the other tech giant which has gained significantly in this year's list is Google, which grabbed the second spot, moving up from last year's fourth position. Its value has been put at $93.2 billion, an increase of 34% over last year.

This year's list shows the dominance of tech giant as the biggest global brands as Apple and Google were not the only two technology names in the list. Major technology companies took five spots in the top 10. They include the likes of Microsoft, Samsung and Intel.

While Microsoft has retained the fifth position since last year, Samsung climbed to the eight postition from the ninth last year and Intel fell to the ninth spot from the eight place last year.

IBM, which occpuies the fourth position, has been listed as a business services brand instead of a tech company.

Apart from these gains, there have been some misses for tech companies this year. BlackBerry, which stood at 93 last year has disappeared from the list altogether. Finnish handset maker Nokia, which stood at 19 last year, fell down straight to the 57th spot. Nokia has been named as the "biggest faller" this year among the top 100 in the report.

Apple has also topped this year's Most Innovative Companies list by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where it was followed by Samsung and Google. Recently, the iPhone maker company was voted the Coolest Brand in UK in the CoolBrands survey.

5 things your skin needs everyday..

Your skin needs attention not just once a week, but daily if you want it to be healthy.

If you depend on just fortnightly clean up sessions or the monthly facials to prep up your skin, you're not doing your skin any favours. Here are simple things that your skin needs everyday...

Moisturising

You skin is sensitive — take good care of it and nourish it with moisturisers. Moisturisng twice a day is important if you want your skin to look healthy, blemish-free and improve your complexion.

Water

When you drink water, it flushes out toxins from your body and allows cells to absorb vital nutrients. It also makes sure that your digestive system works properly. And your skin needs water the most to keep it hydrated. It also removes skin impurities, which cause acne and pimples and keeps the skin looking healthy and smooth. Ensure that you have at least eight to 10 glasses of water daily if you want glowing skin.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are found in fruits, vegetables, certain fish and oils. Antioxidants have free-radical-fighting activities, which kill molecules that damage healthy cells. Are you getting enough Vitamin C and E? While vitamin C helps build collagen for plump skin, Vitamin E protects cell membranes. Vit C is found in whole grains, apples and citrus fruits, while Vit E is present in wheat germ oil, almonds and peanut butter.

Sunscreen

No matter how cloudy or rainy it is outside, wearing sunscreen is a must 365 days of the year. Sunscreen not only protects you from skin cancer but also delays the signs of ageing that are caused due to sun exposure.

So if you don't want discoloured, wrinkled, pigmented and flabby skin, ensure that you slap on that sunscreen no matter what. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it 20 minutes before you step out. Re-apply every few hours so that the effects are maximum.

Cleansing

If you want to remove dirt and grime from your skin and keep it oil free, daily cleansing is an absolute must. Cleansing also removes the residue of all the skin products you use and keeps your skin looking fresh and clean.

Use a cleanser that suits your skin type and is soap-free so that it is gentle on your face. Women with extra dry skin should opt for a creamy cleanser while those with sensitive skin should opt for an alcohol-free cleanser.

If you have an oily skin, use an acidic cleanser, which breaks up sebum — your skin's oily secretion that causes clogged pores. When you use a cleanser, gently massage it into your face for about 30 seconds so it gives good results.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22
Your finances may be in need of review as the Sun shines in that sector of your life. With Uranus opposing the Sun, you may expect surprises there. You may be the recipient of a bonus or maybe unclaimed compensation. The placement of Uranus may indicate an inheritance or family-sponsored loan. You may also discover an old insurance claim that has come due or an unexpected over-payment in your favor. There are no guarantees, but it may be wise to focus on this area of your life and see what comes up.

Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
Look to your significant relationships for activity, conversations, and a turn of events. You may be pleasantly surprised as the Sun shines brightly on you at this time of year. Your partner may come home with rather surprising news that completely rocks your world. What types of events could stir you? A transfer? A promotion? The ideas may be wild and varied, but prepare for unexpected news from your partner.

Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Scorpio
Yes, Saturn has been on your back and getting you in line for some time now. You can use that power to keep you accountable and responsible, but the big news for you has to do with self-preservation. You may be quite in tune with your body, but you may discover something unique and exciting during this period. You may find that a new beginning or focus on your physical health completely recharges you and fills you with hope and promise once again.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
You may work within a group of friends or business partners. While this may be a typical enterprise, what is unusual about this time will be the sudden exchange of new and revolutionary ideas. The times are extremely fertile for bold and unconventional projects. If you have an idea that has yet to come forward, now might be an ideal time to show off your own special genius. Bring your idea to the group and watch it morph into something fabulous.

Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
capricon.jpgSurprises at home may bring new life to your career. Your hard work ethic may show signs of a big pay-off as the Sun shines on your career sector. With the spotlight on you, you may be able to land a position that allows you to help the family in a most authentic yet unusual way. You may find a unique method for blending these two disparate parts of your life into a mutually beneficial arrangement. The possibilities may be endless.

Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
aquarius.jpg Speak up and let your thoughts be known. In fact, if you have something dynamic and unusual to tell the world, this might just be the day to shout it out. With the Sun shining in your adventure sector you could be primed to deliver some important news. Or you might receive good news when you least expect it. With Uranus moving in opposition to the Sun, you may see unexpected activity with all forms of communication. Watch out for text messages.

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
You may find great surprises if you delve into the world of finances. You may get word of an overpayment and subsequently get a refund when you really need it. How wonderful is that? With Uranus in your money sector, all sorts of inexplicable financial news may come your way, so be prepared. If you have to act based on the news, you may want to have your advisors nearby in case you need an outside opinion.

Likewise, rules pertaining to exemption for other courses would be the same as of last year.

BCCI meet plays out to Srini's script as loyalists get pound of flesh

CHENNAI: N Srinivasan anointed himself king of the Indian cricket board but he doesn't yet know whether the kingdom is his.

Also read: List of BCCI office-bearers

It took the defiant Chennai strongman less than 20 minutes on Sunday to get himself re-elected as board president for another year although he can take charge only if cleared by the Supreme Court.

There was uneasy calm on 'floor 11' of a city five-star hotel, Srinivasan's favourite venue to conduct his battles, as he ensured a smooth passage of his entire panel at the BCCI annual general meeting, ahead of an SC hearing on Monday.

There were members who didn't want him to take over BCCI's reins. But nobody dared to raise a voice as the unshaven president-in-exile was home and dry, keeping his promise to the media that he would come back to power on September 29.

"The court hasn't stopped him from getting elected as the president or chairing the meeting...So he did both on Sunday, but he told all members that he would start functioning as the president if the Supreme Court clears him," the new central zone vice-president Rajiv Shukla told the waiting media, coming out of the meeting.

His return to power was never in doubt, but once he took over, he ensured there was no whiff of opposition on any front. His first major nomination was Orissa's Ranjib Biswal as IPL chairman, even as his four-month old ally, Jagmohan Dalmiya, had strong reservations against it.

The Dalmiya camp didn't want Biswal on the hot-seat, but Srinivasan hardly bothered as he went about rewarding the member who has stood by him through the tumultuous times.

"I know it's a responsible post and I will look to work with the help of all the members," Biswal told the TOI, when asked whether he would like to add anything to Dalmiya's operation clean up agenda.

Dalmiya, the former BCCI president who was made caretaker chief of BCCI after the emergent working committee meeting on June 2, saw his powers drastically curtailed.

He wasn't given any plum post that he was hoping for and was relegated to heading the north-east development committee.

"It's strange why he accepted this post...May be he feels that Srinivasan might still allot Sachin Tendulkar's 200th Test to Eden Gardens, which will be decided on October 3 in the tours and fixtures committee meeting in Mumbai," said a source close to the developments.

Dalmiya's loyalists argued that the Cricket Association of Bengal president was kept in the loop and the other members of the association were given posts in committees such as NCA, finance, marketing and IPL. "We don't think it's a letdown for Dalmiya," a CAB member said.

All the south zone members who helped Srinivasan tide over the difficult times were made chairmen of different committees, which meant G Gangaraju (Andhra) headed finance, T C Mathew (Kerala) NCA and Vinod Phadke (Goa) media.

INSPIRING STORY "

  Face difficulties positively

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells.

After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving.

Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him.

It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself.

No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well!

What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him . . . all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity.
