Brazilian President's approval up reflecting more confidence in economy
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's approval rating gained six percentage points since hitting an all-time low in late June after massive nationwide protests, a poll published on Saturday showed. The recovery reflects slightly more confidence in Brazil's economy as concerns about inflation ease. The poll also showed Brazilians are less supportive of the mass protests that drew 1 million to the streets at their peak in mid-June.

Narendra Modi thanks British MPs for inviting him to UK, says 'dialogue strengthens democracies'

Nearly 10 months after the British government warmed upto Narendra Modi, the India groups of the country's two main political parties have invited the Gujarat chief minister to visit the UK.
The ball was set rolling by the Opposition party's Labour Friends of India when its chairman, Barry Gardiner MP, sent a letter to Modi last week inviting him to the House of Commons to speak on 'The Future of Modern India'.
"The invitation is a culmination of several years of engagement between senior representatives of the Labour Party and Narendra Modi," the Labour MP for Brent North said.
"I am sure people in the UK and indeed the international community would be very interested to meet and hear what Narendra Modi has to say first hand. He is a politician who cannot be ignored.
I believe it's in Britain's best interests that we engage with him as both the chief minister of Gujarat and also potential prime minister," he added.
"I, like many colleagues within the Labour Party, look forward to welcoming chief minister Modi to the UK. I last had the pleasure of meeting him in Gujarat in 2009. His return visit to the UK is long overdue," said Stephen Pound MP, former chair of Labour Friends of India.

In a rare show of political unity, the Conservative Friends of India issued their own invite for the chairman of the BJP's national election committee a day later on August 9.
Its co-chairman, Sailesh Vara MP, struck a personal note in his letter expressing a wish to "finally meet" Modi.
"It would be a great privilege for us to host an event for you. I very much hope that you will take us up on this invitation when opportunity allows," wrote Vara, the Tory MP for North West Cambridgeshire.
The UK government, like the US, had distanced itself from Modi in the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Tata Steel Q1 net profit up 90% to Rs 1,139 crore
NEW DELHI: Tata Steel on Tuesday reported 90.51 per cent growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,139 crore for the quarter ended June 30, largely due to significant decline in tax outgo.
It had reported net profit of Rs 597.88 crore in the April-June quarter of the 2012-13 fiscal.
The Q1, 2013-14 net sales of the company were however down 3 per cent at Rs 32,550.21 crore due to subdued global steel demand. It had reported net sales of Rs 33,547.73 crore in the Q1, FY'13.
The tax outgo declined by nearly 61 per cent to Rs 351.39 crore, compared to Rs 898.63 crore during Q1, 2012-13, Tata Steel said in a filing to the BSE.
The net profit on standalone basis, which is Indian operations of Tata Steel, was Rs 1,356.11 crore, almost the same as was in Q1 FY'13 (Rs 1,356.56 crore). Standalone net sales were up 6.15 per cent growth at Rs 9,363 crore vis-a-vis Rs 8,820.19 crore.
In a separate statement, the company said that the "improvement (in company's net profit) was on the back of robust performance by the Indian operations and improved performance at the European operations".
Tata Steel managing director HM Nerurkar said: "The Indian operations delivered a steady performance in a subdued market environment with deliveries growing at an enhanced pace over the comparable period of last year."
He further said that work on the upcoming steel plant in Odisha, first for Tata Steel India outside Jamshedpur, is in full swing. Besides, he added that the South East Asian operations continue to be robust.
During Q1, FY'14, Tata Steel's total steel deliveries rose to 6.08 million tonnes (MT) versus 5.68 MT in Q1 FY'13, the company said, adding that it happened mainly due to volume growth at India operations, where the company has added 2.9 MT new capacity some time back.Talking about India, the company said that deliveries totalled 2 MT in the quarter compared to 1.59 MT of Q1 FY'13, an increase of 25.8 per cent.
Deliveries at Tata Steel Europe, which contributes more than 50 per cent of operations, declined to 3.14 MT in the last quarter, slightly lower than the 3.21 MT of Q1FY'13, "largely due to soft market demand", the company said.
Tata Steel Europe's turnover was down 9.67 per cent to Rs 18,432 crore, as against Rs 20,406 crore of Q1 FY'13."Our European facilities recorded higher production volumes... We see signs that our strategy is enhancing bottom-line performance, despite continued subdued European demand," Tata Steel Europe MD and CEO Dr Karl-Ulrich Kohler said.
He added that there have been some encouraging signs of improving economic conditions, particularly in UK and the company is "poised to capitalise should these translate more strongly into increased demand from steel-intensive sectors."

Need control on alcohol, diet to curb cancer: Doctors
Two-thirds of the cancer cases in India can be prevented either by making effective policies or better implementation of the existing ones, say experts. What's more, a grip on alcohol consumption and obesity can help prevent a large percentage of cancer.
According to the World Economic Forum, cancer is among one of the three greatest risks to the global economy. This may be due to escalating cost of care, the threat to productivity from death and disability, and the effects of costs on household impoverishment. But this year's theme of World Cancer Day: "Dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer" can help change the situation, say experts.
Last year, representatives from 117 countries converged at the United Nations to address the prevention and control of cancer and non-communicable diseases and declared four key strategies: control tobacco, unsafe use of alcohol, obesity and encourage better nutrition. While improving the nutritional status of a 100-crore population nation is an uphill task, control on tobacco, areca nut, alcohol and junk food is well within the reach of policymakers, say experts. "There is awareness about the cancer-causing properties of tobacco, but most people are still unaware of the harmful effects of alcohol, areca nut and obesity," said Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, oncosurgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital.
"Alcohol is causally related to cancers of the mouth, oropharynx, liver, oesophagus and breast. The risk becomes much higher when tobacco is consumed along with alcohol," he said.
Another cause of worry for oncologists is obesity. A study, using National Cancer Institute surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data, estimated that in 2007 in the US, about 34,000 new cases of cancer in men (4%) and 50,500 in women (7%) were due to obesity. This analysis also found that if every adult reduced their Body Mass Index by 1%, which would be equivalent to a weight loss of roughly 1kg for an adult of average weight, this would actually result in the avoidance of about one lakh new cases.
Head of Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr Rajan Badwe said an unhealthy diet is one of the major contributors in cancer among the obese. "Adolescent obesity is known to produce diabetes, hypertension and cancers like those of breast, ovary and uterus among women and stomach, kidney and colon among men in the later years," Dr Badwe said.Worrying numbers
* There are about 30 lakh new cases of cancer in India at any particular point of time
* About 5 lakh deaths a year in the country are due to cancer.
* 40% of cancer cases are due to the use of tobacco
* The leading sites of cancer are the oral cavity, lungs, oesophagus and stomach among men and cervix, breast and oral cavity among women.

Tech check: Allahabad University to introduce concept of mobile learning
ALLAHABAD: Very soon teaching would not be confined to four walls of classroom as authorities of the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) of Allahabad University are all set to introduce the concept of mobile-learning. The needed infrastructure for this technique would soon be in place and authorities would start with trial run of this novel concept on the campus.
Detailing on the initiative, director, IPS, Prof GK Rai, said, "IPS has taken a new technology based initiative that of using mobile technology enabled learning solution for English proficiency and work-place skill". The initiative plans to utilise portable device (tablet) based language lab wherein 'm-Education' represents a profound shift in the way education is delivered and received, he added.
"The programme would be launched at Centre of Food Technology on August 13 through joint training programme of teachers and learners", informed Prof Rai.
About the technology, Prof Rai said that mEducation is a technology-enabled learning solution available to learners anytime, anywhere. Any portable device, such as a tablet, laptop or even mobile phone that provides access to educational content through mobile connectivity (2G, 3G, or 4G complemented by mobile-based Wi-Fi) can be a tool for mEducation.
"Mobile technology has begun to permeate our daily lives, providing unparalleled access to information. It is also raising the quality of education and improving access to it", he said. The portable language lab consists of 21 tablets (20 student version + 1 teacher version), packed in a trolley (which provides storage, wireless access point, transportation & charging). Internet connectivity is provided through a CISCO router. The trolley also has a projector and speakers so that teacher can project from anywhere. The tablets are pre-loaded with the course work, English Edge designed by LIQVID, a Noida based company.
Prof Rai further informed that mEducation offers three advantages with the potential to improve imparting education and thereby enhance learning outcomes which includes simplifying access to content and experts, overcoming traditional constraints of time, location and collaboration.
It also personalises education solutions for individual learners, helping educators customise the teaching process, using software and interactive media that adapt levels of difficulty to individual students' understanding and pace.
Talking of the course, the director of IPS said that the course provides interactive multimedia content keeping in mind the Indian context for listening, reading, writing and speaking-based interactive activities and exercises covering fluency and confidence building, grammar-tenses, articles etc. along with pronunciation, accent reduction, comprehension issues and written communications.
Likewise, for communication, the course would cater to personality, confidence, presentation etc. covering verbal, narrative structures, non-verbal i.e. body language, group discussions, role plays, interview and presentation skills, he said.
The course would also have video recording and playback facility. Students can do a whole lot of project based learning exercises, like video shoot a conversation and comment. "There is a master teacher tablet that controls the activity of all the student tablets and this leads to an undivided attention of teacher to each of the student and hence is helpful in monitoring and regular feedback", said Prof Rai.
He further said that for learners this is a unique opportunity, as everyone gets a chance to register their response to a particular question and hence is an equal participant in the classroom activity.
This ensures that no student is devoid of the opportunity to learn and tablet becomes an invaluable companion for learning. The other advantages of the portable lab include battery powered tablets ensures uninterrupted sessions and in portable lab, no additional infrastructure and space is required.

Maria Sharapova loses in return from injury

CINCINNATI: The Maria Sharapova-Jimmy Connors partnership got off to a rocky start on Tuesday as Sloane Stephens shocked the third ranked Russian 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 at the Western and Southern Open.
Victoria Azarenka also made a shaky return following a brief injury layoff but recovered to dispose of American qualifier Vania King 6-1, 7-6(6) and reach the last 16.
While it is too early to tell if Sharapova and Connors can produce the same kind of success Andy Murray has enjoyed since recruiting Ivan Lendl as his coach, the first step was far from a positive one.
"Obviously I didn't lose today because I didn't implement what we were working on," Sharapova told reporters. "The things that we're working on ... are to improve with the game I have.
"So, obviously, it's tough to lose at this stage but just got to keep working hard and keep moving forward."
Stephens, ranked 17th in the world, was always going to be a tricky test for Sharapova and the loss likely had more to do with her seven-week injury layoff than the new coaching relationship with Connors, who oozed grit and determination to build a Hall of Fame career.
On the sidelines with an injured left hip since a second round loss at Wimbledon, Sharapova moved effortlessly across the Cincinnati hardcourt but her play lacked sharpness, the Russian committing over 60 unforced errors and seven double faults.
"I stopped being patient and I started making a lot more errors, errors that I shouldn't make," said Sharapova.
"Obviously I haven't played in a long time but I can't make that excuse for myself because I've got to be ready from the first match.
"So it's obviously disappointing, but that's the way it goes in this game."
FLUSTERED
Connors would have been pleased with Sharapova's opening set but likely more impressed with the grit shown by her young opponent, who refused to buckle and battled back from 0-2 down in the second to force it to a tiebreak, which she took 7-5.
Looking on from the stands, Connors was dressed like he came to work with his long-sleeved white shirt rolled up the elbows and glasses dipped on his nose.
But there was nothing the nine-time grand slam winner could do as he watched his student unravel in the third set except hang his head.

" INSPIRING STORY "
A story for Passover
A good Passover story should always involve cakes. Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka is the subject of this year’s story. He was in the news because of his most recent catalogue of cake designs; Klaschka is a pastry specialist. Of course, Austrian pastries are famous the world over.
Now, pastry baker Manfred Klaschka’s most recent catalogue of such tasty delights was in the news this week because it included cakes decorated with swastikas – as well as one with a baby raising its right arm in a Nazi salute. Herr Klaschka insists he is not a Nazi.
After the news story broke, he even met with a Holocaust awareness group, and apologized for what he had done, and he then baked a cake to say he was sorry – a cake with Jewish and Christian symbols. The point of the story – the bit I found interesting – is Herr Klaschka’s explanation for what he did.
"I see it was a mistake, anyone who knows me knows what kind of person I am. I am no Nazi", said Klaschka, who had earlier said he was just a pastry maker fulfilling his customers’ wishes. Fulfilling his customers’ wishes?
There is a market in Austria in 2011 for cakes with babies raising their arms in Nazi salutes, cakes with swastikas on them? There are parties where people serve such cakes? Maybe birthday parties for babies?
f course there are such people, and there are such parties, and because of that, there is a market – there is consumer demand – for swastika cakes. Which is why Herr Klaschka was happy to bake them. And not only in Austria. You may remember the case of the Campbell family from New Jersey.
When Kurt Waldheim was exposed as a war criminal his popularity rose. The neo-Nazi Freedom Party headed by the late Jorg Haider, won 27% of the vote in the 2000 elections and became part of the coalition government – the first time since 1945 that Nazis had sat in a European government.
But this never happened in New Jersey – which is why I want to talk about the Campbell family. The Campbell family in New Jersey made the news back in 2008 when they tried to get a birthday cake made for their son — they have a son and two daughters — at the local Shop Rite in Holland Township. The store refused their request.
And the reason was that Mr. Campbell wanted the cake to read "Happy birthday Adolf Hitler". Because, you see, his son’s name was Adolf Hitler Campell. One of the daughters is named is named JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell. Well, you get the point.
When I read about the Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka, I thought – here was a marketing opportunity for him. He would have happily baked a cake for the Campbell family. So what does all this have to do with Passover?
This week, when we are forbidden to eat Sachertore or Linzer tort or even the delightfully named Punschkrapfen, we might want to pause and think about something we say every year at the Passover seder: 'In every generation it is the duty of man to consider himself as if he had come forth from Egypt'.
Because in this generation, as in all others, there are those who order custom-made swastika cakes. There are those who name their children after Adolf Hitler. And there are others who fire anti-tank missiles at school busses with Jewish children in them.
Because there are those who are building nuclear weapons, having told the world that their intention is to wipe the Jewish state off the face of the earth. Because people like that make Pharaoh look like a nice guy. Because getting out of the house of bondage, out of slavery in Egypt, was not the end of the story for the Jewish people, but was the beginning.
It is a story of a never-ending struggle for freedom, for dignity, for respect, for human rights, that has universal resonance and meaning — for all people, everywhere, always.
