Hit by dissidence in Bihar, BJP alleges Nitish Kumar trying to split the party

Patna: Just a month after the Janata Dal (United) broke its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party, cracks are visible within the Bihar unit of the BJP. Four BJP MLAs, of whom one has been suspended, have revolted against former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi alleging about his autocratic ways. Hit by the prospects of its MLAs crossing over to the JD(U), the BJP is alleging that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is behind the revolt.

"MLA Amarnath Gami has been suspended for six years. Nitish Kumar is behind this," BJP spokesperson Vinod Narayan Jha alleged.

The JD(U), however, has refuted the allegation. "As far as JD(U) is concerned, we have nothing to do with BJP," JD(U) General Secretary and spokesperson Dr Ajay Alok said.

Many state BJP members, mainly in the Mithilanchal region of north Bihar, are likely to join the JD(U), sources said on Sunday.

Amarnath Gami, BJP MLA from Hayaghat in Darbhanga district, had accused Sushil Kumar Modi of monopolising party affairs and promoting sycophants and neglecting genuine workers like him. "Sushil Kumar Modi has hijacked the party. He does not want party cardres to progress and therefore he suppresses them. That's why I am against him," he had said.

While Gami has been suspended, sources said the party is considering action against other 'rebel' leaders - Vijay Mishra, Shashi Hazari and Rana Ganeshwar - too.

In a press release, state BJP Vice President Sanjay Mayukh said that state party president Mangal Pandey suspended Gami for anti-party activities.

Gami described his suspension without any showcause notice being served as 'undemocratic' and an example of Sushil Modi's monopoly over the party. Pandey dismissed Gami's allegations and justified his suspension.

Hitting out at the JD(U), Pandey said, "Our MLAs are being lured away. They are being offered ministership and their relatives are being promised seats in the legislative council". He accused Nitish of trying to shore up his numbers by wooing BJP legislators. "The day the Chief Minister expands his Council of Ministers, there will be a split in JD(U). So, he is trying to increase his numbers in the assembly".

After splitting from the BJP in June following the appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as chief of the party's election campaign committee, the Nitish Kumar government had comfortably won a vote of confidence in the 243-member Bihar Assembly with the Congress backing it.

A total of 126 votes, including four of Congress and one of CPI, were cast in favour of the confidence motion while 24, including 22 of Lalu Prasad-led RJD, voted against the motion as BJP members staged a walkout before the vote.

Aries March 21 to April 19
You may feel as if you're in a pinch financially when it comes to funding a personal goal. Although an investor possibly will back out or a lending institution may deny your application, don't take this as a sure sign of failure. Instead, regroup and consider how you can still move forward by cutting back on certain expenses related to this endeavor. You can make this work.

Taurus April 20 to May 20
Yesterday's full moon lit up the area of your chart that involves honor and success. While this full moon possibly will put you in the spotlight for one of your achievements, there appears to be a lack of support from either a business partner or client. Try not to allow this to distract you from your moment of glory. View any professional jealousy as a compliment.

Gemini May 21 to June 20
geminiYou might have recently received news about a publishing, broadcasting, or international opportunity coming to fruition. This project will be something you'll look forward to executing. It may even allow you to travel to another part of the world. First, however, you might need to address an issue with one of your colleagues. He or she might not be included in this project, and if so, this person may take the sour attitude out on you. Nip it in the bud.

Cancer June 21 to July 22
News surrounding a joint financial matter may come to conclusion now. This may involve alimony if you're going through a divorce, or another type of settlement. Question of change or continuity hovers over RBI

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: The economist rock star? The bureaucrat? The incumbent?
The identity of next Reserve Bank of India (RBI) chief remains a matter of speculation even as Governor Duvvuri Subbarao scrambles to support an embattled rupee with less than seven weeks to go before he is due to leave office.

An extension of Subbarao's tenure, once unlikely, has become a possibility as the rupee reels from a selldown of emerging markets that has hit India especially hard because of its high current account deficit.

Other leading candidates are Raghuram Rajan, India's chief economic advisor, who made his name by predicting the global financial crisis; and Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram, a career civil servant and key lieutenant to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Saumitra Chaudhuri, 59, a member of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's influential Planning Commission, has also been cited by government sources and media as a contender.

Speaking in Moscow on Saturday, Subbarao told Reuters that he had not so far been asked to stay on.

"No offer has been made so far, so there is no question of accepting so far. It is a hypothetical question. As I said before, I must move on," Subbarao said on the sidelines of a meeting of the world's financial leaders.

Whoever gets the nod inherits an economy growing at its slowest in a decade, and saddled with a record high current account deficit which has raised fears that the balance of payments could worsen. Down nearly 10 per cent against the dollar since the start of May, the rupee recently hit a record low.

To make matters worse, Prime Minister Singh's weak coalition is heading for elections due by May next year, making it harder to push through unpopular reforms that could take some pressure off the current account by attracting more foreign investment.

Left fighting a rearguard action to slow the rupee's slide, the RBI took a risk last week by tightening liquidity and raising short-term rates, a strategy that compromises efforts to put some momentum back into growth.

"Now, the major decision-making variable for them is current account deficit and external sector risks," said Rupa Rege Nitsure, chief economist at Bank of BarodaBSE 2.77 % in Mumbai, who put the odds of a Subbarao extension at better than 50 per cent.

As things stand, Subbarao is due to lead his last quarterly review of monetary policy on July 30, with speculation mounting that he may be forced to squeeze liquidity harder, possibly by raising banks' cash reserve requirements. A hike in policy interest rates, unthinkable a week ago, is now seen by some economists as an outside possibility.

Rajan, a former International Monetary Fund chief economist and University of Chicago professor who returned to India last year to become the lead advisor in the finance ministry, had long been viewed as the favourite, but ministry insiders say he has competition.

13 natural ways to lower blood pressure

High blood pressure can boost the risks of leading killers such as heart attack and stroke, as well as aneurysms, cognitive decline, and kidney failure.

While medication can lower blood pressure, it may cause side effects such as leg cramps, dizziness, and insomnia. Luckily, most people can bring down their blood pressure naturally without medication.

Here are top 10 natural alternatives to prescribed drugs, according to ABC News.

Go for power walks: Hypertensive patients who went for fitness walks at a brisk pace lowered pressure by almost 8 mmhg over 6 mmhg. Exercise helps the heart use oxygen more efficiently, so it doesn't work as hard to pump blood.

Slow breathing and meditative practices such as qigong, yoga, and tai chi decrease stress hormones, which elevate renin, a kidney enzyme that raises blood pressure.

So try 5 minutes in the morning and at night. Inhale deeply and expand your belly. Exhale and release all of your tension.

Eat potatoes: Loading up on potassium-rich fruits and vegetables is an important part of any blood pressure-lowering program, said Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medical.

Lower salt intake to 1,500 mg daily, said Eva Obarzanek, PhD, a research nutritionist at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute..

Indulge in dark chocolate: Dark chocolate varieties contain flavanols that make blood vessels more elastic. In one study, 18percent of patients who ate it every day saw blood pressure decrease.

Take a supplement: In a review of 12 studies, researchers found that coenzyme Q10 reduced blood pressure by up to 17 mmhg over 10 mmhg.
Reduce alcohol intake: According to a review of 15 studies, the less you drink, the lower your blood pressure will drop—to a point.

Switch to decaf coffee: A study from Duke University Medical Center found that caffeine consumption of 500 mg—roughly three 8-ounce cups of coffee—increased blood pressure by 4 mmhg, and that effect lasted until bedtime.
Drink tea: Study participants who sipped 3 cups of a hibiscus tea daily lowered systolic blood pressure by 7 points in 6 weeks on average, said researchers from Tufts University—results on par with many prescription medications.

Work (a bit) less: Putting in more than 41 hours per week at the office raises your risk of hypertension by 15per cent, according to a University of California, Irvine, study of 24,205 California residents.
Relax with music: Listening to soothing classical, Celtic, or Indian music for 30 minutes daily while breathing slowly helps lower blood pressure, according to researchers at the University of Florence in Italy.

Seek help for snoring: University of Alabama researchers found that many sleep apnea sufferers had high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that can boost blood pressure.
Jump for soy: A study from Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association found for the first time that replacing some of the refined carbohydrates in your diet with foods high in soy or milk protein, such as low-fat dairy, can bring down systolic blood pressure if you have hypertension or prehypertension.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22
If you're feeling less than content on the job, it might be time for you to consider looking elsewhere. You might feel like a change is in order because you're no longer intellectually stimulated with the type of assignments offered. If this is the case, an honest conversation with your superior might help. In the end, if you're not feeling supported or appreciated at work, it's a clear signal that it's time to move on.

Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
You might feel less than appreciated by your sweetheart. If you're not able to change things by bringing this to his or her awareness, you might begin to back away from the relationship. Whether or not you decide to part ways will ultimately depend on your love's ability to value your feelings more. There is a chance for you to work things out, however, you'll no longer be willing to settle for anything less than you know you deserve in love.

Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Scorpio
Expect heightened emotions due to a family situation. This may not necessarily be bad news so don't fret! Whatever message you receive, you'll likely take it seriously and will feel an incredible sense of obligation and responsibility to your family. You might, for instance, be on the verge of purchasing your own home or relocating your family. These are good scenarios but emotionally charged nonetheless.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
You might be in the market for a new car. Consider shopping around for a better bargain or a model that's better suited to your lifestyle. There may also be a writing assignment or communications-related job that comes to completion and if so, you may feel torn about its ending. On the one hand, you'll be glad the job has been completed, but you'll likely miss this type of work.

Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
capricon.jpgAre you feeling insecure about financial matters? Yesterday's full moon in your earned income sector might prompt you toward excessive worry when it comes to cash flow. While a source of income may dry up, another revenue stream likely will open up just as suddenly. Think about ways to monetize an unusual talent and work from there. Turn worry into production.

Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
aquarius.jpg Feeling more emotional than usual? Yesterday's full moon in Aquarius might have left you with a greater amount of sensitivity than you're used to carrying around. Typically, you're capable of remaining logical - even detached if necessary - in order to maintain a sense of personal order in your environment. Suddenly, however, it may appear that you've lost the ability to not take things personally. Remember that it's okay to feel before you think.

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
You might be on the verge of a personal breakthrough. If you've had any specific anxiety or worry lately, release it once and for all. You may do this on your own, but you also might decide to seek help from a counselor or trusted friend. Meditation, journaling, or even a long walk on the beach might help you gain important clarity now. Remember to be kind to yourself.

After getting caught in a large group of cars flying down the road she looked at her speedometer to seeshe is doing 15 miles over the speed limit.

Slowing down she moved over to theside to let the group of cars get ahead. She looked up and saw the flashing lights of a police car.

Pulling over she waited for the officer to come up to her car.

As he did he said, "Ma'am do you know why I pulled you over?"

Little Johnny peeped up from the back seat, "I do! It's because you couldn't catch the other cars."

Rentals for outstation candidates in Delhi

Not all outstation candidates get a hostel seat in colleges , and have to rely on paying guest (PG) accommodation in nearby areas.

In the North Campus, Vijay Nagar, Hudson Lane, Mukherjee Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Bungalow Road, etc, are some of the preferred locations. Their proximity to the North Campus and easyon-the pocket rentals make it so.

Says Gagan Makker, a real estate agent in the area, "Students can find PG accommodation between Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per student in most areas surrounding the North Campus.

A 2BHK apartment will cost around Rs 20,000 per month. Rentals are slightly higher for properties on the bunglow road."

For South Campus, popular areas to hunt for a PG include South Extension, GK, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar other than Satya Niketan, which is a stone's throw from colleges like Ram Lal Anand, Sri Venkateswara, Jesus and Mary, Moti Lal Nehru, ARSD, etc.

The rentals for a PG accommodation in Satya Niketan vary from Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 per student.

Finding an accommodation that suits your budget is not difficult in this area. Most houses here let out a room or two to students — generally to girls.

Mickelson wins British Open by three shots

GULLANE (United Kingdom): Phil Mickelson won the British Open for the first time at Muirfield on Sunday, one month after his heartbreak at the US Open where he was runner-up for a record sixth time.

The 43-year-old lefty saved his best for last as he came down the brutal back nine at the famed links course east of Edinburgh in 32, birdieing four of the last six holes, for a five-under 66.

That gave him a three under total of 281, three strokes clear of Henrik Stenson of Sweden, who had a closing 70.

Third place was shared by English pair Lee Westwood (75) and Ian Poulter (67) and Australian Adam Scott (72).

Mickelson won in what was his 20th Open campaign and it was his fifth major title after the Masters of 2004, 2006 and 2010 and the PGA Championship of 2005. It came just one month after he had endured the agony of a record sixth runner-up finish at the US Open behind Justin Rose.

"This is such an accomplishment because I never knew whether I'd be able to develop my game to play links golf. I played arguably the best round of my career, and shot the round of my life," he said.

"The range of emotions I feel are as far apart as possible after losing the US Open. To win this feels amazing.

"You have to be resilient in this game. These last couple of weeks, these last couple of months, I've played some of the best golf of my career."

Westwood, who started the day with a two stroke lead over the field, once again found himself coming up agonisingly short at a major tournament, the 62nd of his career.

"I didn't really play well enough today. I didn't play badly, but I didn't play great. It's a tough golf course, and you've got to have your "A" game," he said.

"Phil obviously played well. He shot the round of the day, 5-under par, I think. And birdied four out of six (last holes). That's a pretty special finishing in a major championship."

Scott, who squandered a four shot lead with four to play at last year's Open said: "I let a great chance slip.

"It's a shame. But the game is there. I'm going to look forward to keeping it sharp next week and going to the World Golf Championship and another major in the next couple of weeks. I like where I'm at."

Mickelson started the final round five strokes adrift of overnight leader Westwood, but held steady going out and then stormed down the back nine in a superb 32 at a time when all of his rivals were stumbling in the tough conditions.

It was the third straight Open won by a golfer in their 40s with Ernie Els and Darren Clarke both 42 when they won at Royal Lytham and Royal St George's, respectively

Mickelson also became the first player in history to win the Scottish Open and then go on to win the British Open the following week.

Tiger Woods started the day tied for second, just two off the lead, but he failed to find any spark and his record of never having won a major when trailing after 54 holes held firm as he came in at two over 286 after a 74.

Throughout the day it was a bruising battle of wiles and wills among the the world's best golfers with no quarter given and the mighty Muirfield links showing no mercy to the faint-hearted.

The lead changed hands at regular intervals, but in the end it was the experience and the expertise of the popular Mickelson that carried the day to secure the Claret Jug that goes to the winner of the British Open.

England's Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter set the early clubhouse target of one over 285 thanks to a magical putting display that saw him follow an eagle at nine with three straight birdies en route to a 67.
