American auto industry about to go on hiring spree

The auto industry is about to go on a hiring spree as car makers and parts suppliers race to find engineers, technicians, and factory workers to build the next generation of vehicles. From coast to coast, the industry is in top gear. Factories are operating at about 95 percent of capacity, and many are already running three shifts. As a result, some auto and parts companies are doing something they've been reluctant to consider since the recession: Adding floor space and spending millions of dollars on new equipment.

Britain's recovery strengthens, house prices rise

British house prices are rising at their fastest pace in three years and the country's lagging industrial sector is now contributing to the economy's recovery, data showed on Tuesday.

Cambodia welcomes statues' return from US museum

Two 10th century Cambodian stone statues displayed for nearly two decades at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art were returned to their homeland Tuesday. The voluntary return of the pair of the statues by one of America's foremost cultural institutions is seen as setting a precedent for the restoration of artworks to their places of origin, from which they were often removed in hazy circumstances.

More Americans quit jobs, a sign of confidence

More Americans are quitting their jobs, suggesting many are growing more confident in the job market. The growth in hiring and quits provides more evidence of a dynamic job market that is making slow but steady strides. Most workers quit their jobs when they have a new position or feel confident that they can find one quickly. And when they do, it opens up more opportunities for other Americans, including the unemployed.

Nitish planning a federal front of CMs of Bihar, WB, Odisha: sources

New Delhi: There is more trouble in store for the Bharatiya Janata Party after the LK Advani saga. Sources say that the Janata Dal United-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance is likely to end soon. Sources say Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is planning to create a federal front of three Chief Ministers, that of Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar.

Sources say it is the demand for a special category status that unites them. In fact, sources add that Nitish Kumar has already extended support to the BJD rally in Delhi for a special status to Odisha. Nitish has also sent his emissary JD(U) MP KC Tyagi to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata.
JD(U) sources say in case the three Chief Ministers come together, they can negotiate with either of the two main parties - the BJP or the Congress in government formation. Top JD(U) sources say that it's just a matter of days before the JD(U) pulls out of the NDA.
JD(U) sources say the process of garnering support on the floor of the Bihar Assembly in case of walking out of the alliance has started. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar convened a meeting with senior JD(U) leaders in Patna on Tuesday evening. JD(U) leaders have reportedly been asked to contact independent MLAs and garner their support in JD(U)'s favour. Three MLAs have already vouched to back the JD(U).

Sources have told CNN-IBN that the announcement regarding the snapping of ties may come any day after June 15 once Nitish Kumar returns from his Seva Yatra. Sources say the official announcement will be made in Delhi by JD(U) President Sharad Yadav.

JD(U) sources said the consultation will continue and claimed that a 'big announcement' is expected 'any time'. "The decision will be announced in a few days. Be patient, wait for sometime. The decision will be made," said Nitish Kumar.

Nitish held talks with Sharad Yadav and other senior state JD(U) leaders till late Tuesday night weighing the pros and cons of remaining in the alliance. He also held talks with senior ministers in his cabinet like Bijendra Yadav, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Narendra Singh, Brishen Patel, Shayam Rajak and Rajya Sabha member and a close confidante RCP Singh.

"The ministers have met Nitish Kumar. The future of the alliance was discussed and it is a call that will be taken by the party soon. The alliance with the BJP stands for now," said JD(U) leader Vijay Chaudhary.

JD(U) leader and Bihar Food Minister Shyam Rajak said, "The recent events have raised serious questions about the alliance within the JD(U). The events in Goa have strained the alliance and now we have to ask ourselves some tough questions."

These consultations within the JD(U) come just days after the anointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. "This coalition is almost over now because a man tainted in communal riots is not acceptable to us," said JD(U) leader Narender Singh.

The LK Advani episode in the past two days has added fuel to the fire. It now remains to be seen when the 'big announcement' from the JD(U) comes.

JD(U)'s strength in the Bihar Assembly is 119 MLAs. If the BJP-JD(U) ties snap, Nitish would need the support of four MLAs to get a majority of 122. Sources say three MLAs have reportedly confirmed their support but in case of falling short by one MLA, the JD(U) is hoping that the Congress would abstain from voting, paving way for the survival of the Nitish government.

Inflation seen within RBI comfort level in May

(Reuters) - India's headline inflation probably held near the central bank's comfort level of 5 percent last month, giving it room to ease policy, as commodity, food and fuel costs remained moderate, a Reuters poll found.

Wholesale prices, India's key inflation measure, probably rose an annual 4.87 percent in May, the slowest pace since November 2009, the poll of economists showed.

They rose 4.89 percent in April, the first time the index has been below 5 percent in over three years.

High inflation has been a constant roadblock for policymakers struggling to breathe life into Asia's third-largest economy, and a major factor in the declining popularity of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government.

"We don't expect it to rise primarily on account of global prices being soft in April and you would see some lagged impact in the inflation in May," said Abhishek Upadhyay, economist at Axis Bank in Mumbai.

In recent months inflation has cooled on moderating food and fuel costs, helped along by lower global commodities prices. Forecasts in the poll, conducted this week, ranged from 4.60 percent to 5.40 percent.

Both the manufacturing and services Purchasing Managers' Indexes (PMI) released last week also showed price pressures eased last month.

"As suggested by the monthly PMI readings, core inflation is likely to fall below 2.5 percent," said Rupa Rege Nitsure, chief economist at Bank of Baroda.

Core inflation, which the central bank monitors to gauge demand-driven price pressures, slowed to 2.8 percent in April from 3.5 percent the previous month on slowing global prices of iron ore and steel.

However, the Reserve Bank of India - which has already cut its lending rate three times this year - has said it will increasingly monitor prices at a retail level, partly because the wide gap has made the consumer price index difficult to ignore.

Retail inflation likely remained elevated in May, despite easing for the third straight month, after staying close to or above double-digits for over a year, according to a separate Reuters poll.

To add to inflation concerns, the recent fall in the Indian rupee to record lows has sparked worries about a rise in the price of imported goods such as crude oil. India is one of the largest importers of crude oil and gold.

"If you see the WPI basket, about 50 percent of it can be attributed to imported products. So if rupee depreciation sustains and global commodity prices don't come off ... there will be an impact on the coming domestic inflation prints," added Upadhyay at Axis Bank..

Ravindra Jadeja: The man from Saurashtra with the golden arm

AHMEDABAD: Whatever Ravindra Jadeja is touching these days, everything is turning to gold.

For someone who was not part of the Indian Test team and dropped from the Indian ODI and T20 teams not very long ago, the southpaw from Saurashtra has done extremely well to hog the headlines so frequently, and for all his action on the field and not off it like many of his fellow cricketers.

And the all-rounder who made his Test debut on the strength of his batting is bowling like a man with a golden arm, hardly going wrong and giving the breakthroughs whenever India needed them.

He started off with two triple hundreds in the Ranji Trophy last year and immediately made his Test debut, played successfully in the ODIs and T20s for India and then had a successful IPL campaign.

In the Champions Trophy in England, Jadeja just started from where he left in India. No doubt he has become such a trusted lieutenant to captain MS Dhoni.

In his man-of-the-match performance against the West Indies on Tuesday he not only picked up five wickets but was also the most economical among all Indian bowlers. His quota of 10 overs had two maidens, cost him 36 runs and picked the wickets of Johnson Charles, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul.

That two of his victims were leg-before, one bowled and one caught behind also shows that he was accurate to the T and bowling tight length without giving any room for the batsmen to score. Jadeja was in fact enjoying his show and he topped it with a catch of the West Indies skipper Dawyne Bravo off the bowling of Umesh Yadav.

"I was just trying to bowl in the right areas, I played here against England and took two wickets, I'm just trying to give my good performance. I was just bowling wicket-to-wicket and letting the pitch do the rest," Jadeja said after receiving his man-of-the-match award during the post match presentation. His performance was also praised by both Bravo and Indian skipper Dhoni after the match.

"We didn't have enough runs, after the start we got, we deserved to have got 40-50 runs more, having said that, the Indians bowled well in the middle overs. They had their plans and stuck to it," said Bravo.

INSPIRING STORY "

  Great people are always humble

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”
