Canada manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index strongest level in nearly a year

Canada's manufacturing growth expanded at its fastest pace in nearly a year in May, according to data released on Monday, underpinned by new orders which pushed output back into growth mode for the first time in three months. 'The Canadian manufacturing sector perked up considerably in May, thanks to renewed vitality in new orders and job creation,' said Craig Wright, chief economist at RBC, in a statement. 'As we navigate through the remainder of 2013, we expect the sector's performance to improve further, boosting Canadian growth.'

Global consumers want products that are more sustainable

Across multiple markets and product categories, consumers are expressing interest in what goes in, on and around their bodies; almost two-thirds of us seek food and beverage products 'made with no genetically modified organisms' when we are making buying decisions. Additionally, 87 per cent say that when they read 'uses no harsh chemicals or toxins', it drives their product purchases in the beauty and personal care category. The majority, that's 85 per cent globally, consider 'made with no harsh chemicals or toxins' to be crucial when purchasing household care products.

Chrysler, Nissan US sales rise in May

Nissan's US sales leaped 25 per cent last month while Chrysler sales rose 11 per cent, signs that auto sales rebounded from a slight dip in April and will continue to boost the US economy. The early figures support analysts' predictions of a strong May for the auto industry. Memorial Day sales and Nissan's price cuts were expected to draw customers back into dealerships after a slower-than-expected April.

Government likely to discuss ordinance on Food Security today

INew Delhi: The government is likely to bring in an ordinance on the Food Security Bill in the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Sources say the government has spoken to all the allies on the proposal and that it prefers an ordinance instead of bringing a bill in Parliament as it can reduce the rollout time for the scheme.

The government was earlier reportedly divided on whether to hold a special session of Parliament or introduce the Bill through an ordinance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been demanding that the Bill be debated in Parliament and is in favour of advancing the monsoon session for this. Pointing out that BJP is in favour of passing the Food bill with some amendments, party chief Rajnath Singh today asked the government to advance the Monsoon Session of Parliament for the purpose.

"We are ready for a debate on Food Security and Land Acquisition bills. We want these bills passed with some amendments. The monsoon session be advanced for this," he told reporters in Hyderabad.

Rajnath, however, opposed bringing an ordinance on the issue saying it would be a "cruel joke". In Delhi, AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said Congress was committed to bringing the Food Security Bill and it was for the government to decide the modus operandi.

"We do hope that the government will try to evolve a consensus," he said.

CPI has also favoured a law on food security but is opposed to the Food Security Bill in its present form, saying it is "defective and unacceptable" and it needs to be amended drastically after a comprehensive debate. "We are very much for a legislation which will ensure right to food security.

We are not opposed to the idea of having a food security law," CPI National Secretary D Raja told reporters in Bhubaneswar.

Key UPA ally Samajwadi Party today joined Left parties in expressing reservation over the food security bill, alleging it is "anti-farmer" and will deprive them from getting their proper dues. "The day the bill is implemented, farmers will not get proper dues for their produce," SP leader Naresh Agarwal said.

He apprehended the government was looking towards mid-term elections by bringing this legislation. The UPA coordination committee meeting was attended by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, IUML leader E Ahamed and NC chief Farooq Abdullah. But RLD leader Ajit Singh could not make it as he was out of town.

While BJP is opposed to bringing an ordinance on food bill, the Law Ministry too has expressed its reservations against such a move. It has warned the Food Ministry that without putting a proper mechanism in place to distribute foodgrains, a law should not be implemented.

It said that without the list of intended beneficiaries with state governments in place, an ordinance should not be promulgated as it would make the proposed law meaningless. It also said a system of redressal mechanism should be ready before the ordinance - which will be the law of the land till replaced by an Act of Parliament - is promulgated, sources said.

Another strong view against the proposed ordinance is that legal rights to a citizen cannot be guaranteed through an executive order and it can be provided only by Parliament through an Act. The Law Ministry is of the opinion that the ordinance would be catering to a future development when the system is in place at state and district levels.

Bank aspirants get more time to set up holding company

Companies which would be eligible to apply must have a public shareholding of at least 51 per cent.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on Monday, said that it had decided to extend the validity period of the in-principle approval for setting up of the Non-Operative Financial Holding Company (NOFHC) from one year to 18 months.

“It is expected that this would provide sufficient time for the promoters/promoter group to comply with the various stipulations in the guidelines and the terms and conditions that would be set out while granting the in-principle approvals to successful applicants,” said RBI while issuing clarifications to queries on new banking licenses.

The RBI had released guidelines for licensing of new banks in the private sector last February . The queries received from applicants brought out several complex issues pertaining to the re-organisation of the existing corporate structure, restructuring of businesses and meeting the regulatory requirements.

The RBI further said that NOFHC is to be wholly-owned by the promoters or promoter group and it cannot be a listed company. If the promoter group, which has the financial services company listed or otherwise, wishes to set up a bank, “it must transfer all its regulated financial services business to a separate company and transfer the shareholding in such companies to the NOFHC.”

“After it was transferred, the regulated financial services business will cease to be a financial services company and it can set up a NOFHC provided the public shareholding in it is not less than 51 per cent,” said RBI.

RBI also said that if a housing finance company plans to have an NOFHC, the lending activities must be conducted from inside the bank. Therefore, RBI said “the housing finance activity of the HFC should be transferred to the bank under the NOFHC. The financial sector regulated entity which holds the HFC substantially will have to come under the NOFHC.”

On rural branches
PTI reports:
The RBI sought to allay apprehensions over the lack of level playing field on issues such as rural branch presence and foreign holdings between the existing lenders and the new ones who are to be granted licences.

Replying to a specific query on the lack of level playing due to the insistence on having 25 per cent presence in rural areas, the RBI said all the incremental branches by the existing players are opened in the same proportion.

“With a view to enhancing financial inclusion, the conditions relating to the branch network are specifically prescribed at 25 per cent for unbanked rural centres... this norm has been extended to the existing banks also and they are required to comply with this stipulation while opening new branches,” the regulator said.

To a query on ceiling of 49 per cent equity for the first five years on foreign holding, the RBI said it has been done to encourage more domestic investors getting in. “After expiry of five years, the aggregate foreign shareholding in the bank would be allowed as per the extant FDI policy,” the RBI said in the over 160-pages clarifications it issued on Monday.

Need control on alcohol, diet to curb cancer: Doctors

Two-thirds of the cancer cases in India can be prevented either by making effective policies or better implementation of the existing ones, say experts. What's more, a grip on alcohol consumption and obesity can help prevent a large percentage of cancer.

According to the World Economic Forum, cancer is among one of the three greatest risks to the global economy. This may be due to escalating cost of care, the threat to productivity from death and disability, and the effects of costs on household impoverishment. But this year's theme of World Cancer Day: "Dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer" can help change the situation, say experts.

Last year, representatives from 117 countries converged at the United Nations to address the prevention and control of cancer and non-communicable diseases and declared four key strategies: control tobacco, unsafe use of alcohol, obesity and encourage better nutrition. While improving the nutritional status of a 100-crore population nation is an uphill task, control on tobacco, areca nut, alcohol and junk food is well within the reach of policymakers, say experts. "There is awareness about the cancer-causing properties of tobacco, but most people are still unaware of the harmful effects of alcohol, areca nut and obesity," said Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, oncosurgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital.

"Alcohol is causally related to cancers of the mouth, oropharynx, liver, oesophagus and breast. The risk becomes much higher when tobacco is consumed along with alcohol," he said.

Another cause of worry for oncologists is obesity. A study, using National Cancer Institute surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data, estimated that in 2007 in the US, about 34,000 new cases of cancer in men (4%) and 50,500 in women (7%) were due to obesity. This analysis also found that if every adult reduced their Body Mass Index by 1%, which would be equivalent to a weight loss of roughly 1kg for an adult of average weight, this would actually result in the avoidance of about one lakh new cases.

Head of Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr Rajan Badwe said an unhealthy diet is one of the major contributors in cancer among the obese. "Adolescent obesity is known to produce diabetes, hypertension and cancers like those of breast, ovary and uterus among women and stomach, kidney and colon among men in the later years," Dr Badwe said.Worrying numbers

* There are about 30 lakh new cases of cancer in India at any particular point of time
* About 5 lakh deaths a year in the country are due to cancer.
* 40% of cancer cases are due to the use of tobacco
* The leading sites of cancer are the oral cavity, lungs, oesophagus and stomach among men and cervix, breast and oral cavity among women. Cancer accounts for more deaths worldwide than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
* As per the World Health Organisation Report 2005, the estimated number of cancer deaths in India will increase to 7 lakh by 2015

If you can take time while at work, you may find that your attention and interest level rise along with your mood, as the workout extends to your attitude and output. If you are just starting out, you may find that the real value is further down the road but well worth the effort in the end..

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
Open up your mind and let your imagination take hold. You may be a prolific and articulate person, filled with dreams and ideas, but you may want to try something completely different and see what happens. Maybe it would be a good time to learn a new approach to being creative.

Medical Council of India nod for 50 more MBBS seats at Gandhi Medical College

HYDERABAD: In a decision that will boost medical education in the state, the Medical Council of India (MCI) gave its nod to increase MBBS seats in two state-run colleges, weeks after coming down heavily on the government for poor infrastructure and shortage of manpower in these institutes.

While MBBS seats were increased to 200 from the existing 150 at Gandhi Medical College (GMC), the MCI also gave the go-ahead for enhanced seats at Sri Venkateshwara Medical College (SVMC), Tirupati, from 150 to 200.

The approval came after chief secretary PK Mohanty gave an undertaking to rectify the deficiencies pointed out by MCI inspectors a few months ago in these institutes.

This apart, seats at private medical colleges like SVS Medical College, Mahbubnagar, were raised from 100 to 150, while the apex body also gave permission to Kamineni Hospital to start a new medical college with 150 MBBS seats.

Sources said a final decision to increase the number of seats at other state-run medical colleges including Osmania Medical College, Government Medical College, Nizamabad, and Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, is likely to be announced by the MCI in the next few days. "We have not got any official communication from the MCI yet," said Dr Putta Srinivas, principal, Osmania Medical College.

MCI officials, while carrying out inspections, found poor manpower and infrastructure at Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Medical College and Kakatiya Medical College, two years in a row. But following repeated assurances, the MCI relented. The state government said that it urgently required enhancement of seats as the demand for MBBS course was increasing. Seats were increased at GMC after about eight long years, some officials said.

"This is a boost for deserving students who would have otherwise had to opt for private medical colleges by paying hefty capitation fee that starts from a minimum Rs 40 lakh to about Rs 1 crore depending upon the name of the institute," said a senior doctor.

The approval for SVMC was also given based on an undertaking by Mohanty, assuring documentary proof of budget allocation and rectification of deficiencies before admission. After repeatedly rapped on the knuckles by MCI for ill-maintained medical colleges, the government stepped up pressure on Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to start a medical college.

And after its initial reluctance, the public sector coal mining giant said it was preparing a status paper to launch a world class medical college either in Kotahgudem or Ramagundam in partnership with Nizam Institute of Medical Science (NIMS).

But the news of 100 more medical seats in state-run colleges was welcomed by experts in Hyderabad, who said the institutes have a chequered history and with guidance they can improve gradually.

Raina, Jadeja, Ojha managed by firm owned by Dhoni

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: A day after BCCI president N Srinivasan had to step aside because of a conflict of interest, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni faced a similar charge for holding shares in Rhiti Sports Management Pvt Ltd, a firm that manages three Indian national players—Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha—besides Dhoni himself.

According to documents filed by the firm with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Dhoni held 30,000 shares or 15% stake in Rithi Sports as on March 22. This would indicate an obvious conflict of interest since he has a role in picking the Indian team and the firm would benefit if its clients were to be part of the team.

A sports management firm essentially gets its income from commissions on a player's commercial deals like endorsements, event appearances and so on. Clearly, a Team India player demands higher fees for all of these than somebody who is a domestic player. Rhiti Sports also managed the marketing of Chennai Super Kings of which Dhoni is captain, as well as badminton ace Saina Nehwal.

He had signed up with Rhiti Sports for three years, reportedly for Rs 210 crore in 2010, which translates to an average of Rs 70 crore a year, the costliest deal ever in Indian cricket.

Rhiti Sports sought to refute the allegation on Monday by suggesting that Dhoni is not a shareholder and had only been one for a month in March-April this year. A statement issued by Arun Pandey, the main promoter and a childhood friend of Dhoni, said: "MSD holds no shareholding in Rhiti Sports Management (P) Ltd. It is made clear that shareholding was allotted to MSD on 22.03.2013 only to secure certain old outstandings which were due for more than one year. Further, the payments were cleared in April 2013 and the shareholding was transferred back to promoter of the company on 26.04.2013."

In short, Rhiti Sports' claim is that shares were allotted to Dhoni to raise money for about a month to repay dues and the shares were subsequently bought by either Pandey or one of the other promoters. While pledging shares as collateral for loans is a common practice, their ownership doesn't change.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman said Dhoni should sell off his shares as it could drive him into a "compromising situation." He said: "When such a problem arises, the stakeholder should come out by selling off his shares. I think that can solve all the problems at one go. I am not sure if Dhoni has any share in Rhiti Sports, but if it true, he should sell off shares as it can put him in a compromising situation."

Documents available on the website of the ministry of corporate affairs show that Dhoni was allotted 30,000 shares on March 22 this year for a total price of Rs 3 lakh including share premium. Arun Pandey was also allotted 1.2 lakh shares on the same date for Rs 12 lakh. There were no documents on the website showing the transfer back of Dhoni's shares to Rithi or anybody else.

An experienced chartered accountant told TOI that what Rhiti Sports was suggesting was an extremely unusual business practice. "Companies do not normally allot shares to raise money for such a short period, particularly if they have crores in reserves, as this company appears to have," he said. He added, "If the shares were being allotted to raise money, why were they allotted to an 'outsider'—as the firm claims Dhoni was—at face value? The promoter could be allotted shares at face value, but when an outsider in buying shares in a privately held firm, the question of valuation of those shares is bound to arise." The CA pointed out that in such a situation even the income tax department would normally raise a question about undervaluation of the shares.

On paper, the company has for most of this period had only three shareholders—Pandey, his sister Pratima Tiwary and one Arun Kumar Dass. At the time when the company was set up, Pandey's sister held 1,000 shares of the 10,000 issued, Dass held just one share and the remaining nearly 90% was held by Pandey.

As of September 29, 2012, when the last AGM of the company was held, Pandey held 47,499 of the 50,000 equity shares in the company (about 95%), his sister Pratima held 1,250 shares (2.5%) and a relative Subhawati the remaining 1,251 shares (2.5%). Dass, one of the original promoters, was no longer a shareholder.

This also means that the 1.5 lakh shares allotted in March this year to Dhoni and Pandey would have quadrupled the company's equity base, as already pointed out in the seemingly strange way of tiding over what is claimed to be a temporary cash crunch.

Interestingly, two other firms floated by the Pandey family in 2006—Rhiti Studio Pvt Ltd and Rhiti Production Pvt Ltd—have languished, with no activity worth mentioning. Another firm, Inspired Entertainment, was floated by the same promoters in 2011 to manage corporate events, including fashion shows.

Atul Srivastava, the founder of Gaames Unlimited, that manages R Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane, said that Dhoni wouldn't push for an inferior talent. "It's just not possible. There's just too much scrutiny and I'm very clear in my mind that Dhoni wouldn't back a lesser talent," Srivastava said.

Interestingly, Rahane had spent 18 months in the squad before getting to play in a Test match against Australia even as the likes of Raina and Jadeja were preferred over him. Or, for instance, Manoj Tiwary who was forced to warm the benches for more than 20 One-Day Internationals after scoring a hundred against West Indies. Srivastava, however, denies that. "What you are saying sounds logical. I can't comment on Tiwary's non-inclusion. But the fact is that Rahane hasn't taken the chances that have come his way."

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Movie Name :   Yamla Pagla Deewana 2
Release Date :   7 June 2013

Genre :  Comedy , Drama

Producer : Dharmendra
Director :   Sangeeth Sivan

Music Director : Sharib-Toshi, Sachin Gupta (Aidan Hi Nachna)
Cast : Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Neha Sharma, Kristina Akheeva.

Synopsis:

The album makes an impressive start with title number "Yamla pagla deewana". Rahul Seth's rap is good, but it could've been better. The song is a rare combination of good music and apt lyrics with element of fun. Singers Sanchita Bhattacharya, Sukhwinder Singh and Shankar Mahadevan have put in their best. With dominating Punjabi flavour, the composition is different, but average.

If 'High on Punjabi flavour' has to be defined, singer Mika Singh's "Changli hai changli hai" is an ideal example of that. Replete with fast beats and whistles, the Hinglish lyrics in the song are attention grabber. A typical "road side Romeo" kind of a song, it's high on energy and beats.

Sonu Nigam's voice sounds very interesting when he goes behind the mike to sing typical Punjabi song "Suit tera lal rang da". Sunidhi joins him and she changes the tone and pace of the song in an impeccable manner.

The next track is a surprise number. With a tinge of western electro beats, "Main taan aida hi nachda" is interesting and refreshing. Singers Diljit Dosanjh and Sachinn Gupta seem to have fun while singing it, and it shows in the song. With a lot of catchy and groovy music, it is the high point of the album. Dharmendra joins the singers towards the end.

Last one is "Jatt yamla pagla ho gaya". Sung by Mika and Suzzane D'Mello, it is similar to the title track. Repetition of the same kind of beats and music elements, make it boring! Although it starts off differently, but gradually adapts the beats replete with Punjabi tadka.

Besides the above five tracks, the album also has "Saadi daru da pani (YPD version)", "Jatt yamla pagla ho gaya (Version)" and "YPD2 Mashup".

INSPIRING STORY "

  A story for Passover

A good Passover story should always involve cakes. Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka is the subject of this year’s story. He was in the news because of his most recent catalogue of cake designs; Klaschka is a pastry specialist. Of course, Austrian pastries are famous the world over.

Now, pastry baker Manfred Klaschka’s most recent catalogue of such tasty delights was in the news this week because it included cakes decorated with swastikas – as well as one with a baby raising its right arm in a Nazi salute.  Herr Klaschka insists he is not a Nazi.

After the news story broke, he even met with a Holocaust awareness group, and apologized for what he had done, and he then baked a cake to say he was sorry – a cake with Jewish and Christian symbols. The point of the story – the bit I found interesting – is Herr Klaschka’s explanation for what he did.

"I see it was a mistake, anyone who knows me knows what kind of person I am. I am no Nazi", said Klaschka, who had earlier said he was just a pastry maker fulfilling his customers’ wishes. Fulfilling his customers’ wishes?

There is a market in Austria in 2011 for cakes with babies raising their arms in Nazi salutes, cakes with swastikas on them? There are parties where people serve such cakes? Maybe birthday parties for babies?

f course there are such people, and there are such parties, and because of that, there is a market – there is consumer demand – for swastika cakes.

Which is why Herr Klaschka was happy to bake them. And not only in Austria.
You may remember the case of the Campbell family from New Jersey.

When Kurt Waldheim was exposed as a war criminal his popularity rose. The neo-Nazi Freedom Party headed by the late Jorg Haider, won 27% of the vote in the 2000 elections and became part of the coalition government – the first time since 1945 that Nazis had sat in a European government.

But this never happened in New Jersey – which is why I want to talk about the Campbell family.

The Campbell family in New Jersey made the news back in 2008 when they tried to get a birthday cake made for their son — they have a son and two daughters — at the local Shop Rite in Holland Township.

The store refused their request. And the reason was that Mr. Campbell wanted the cake to read "Happy birthday Adolf Hitler". Because, you see, his son’s name was Adolf Hitler Campell. One of the daughters is named is named JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell.

Well, you get the point.

When I read about the Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka, I thought – here was a marketing opportunity for him.

He would have happily baked a cake for the Campbell family. So what does all this have to do with Passover?

This week, when we are forbidden to eat Sachertore or Linzer tort or even the delightfully named Punschkrapfen, we might want to pause and think about something we say every year at the Passover seder: 'In every generation it is the duty of man to consider himself as if he had come forth from Egypt'.

Because in this generation, as in all others, there are those who order custom-made swastika cakes.

There are those who name their children after Adolf Hitler. And there are others who fire anti-tank missiles at school busses with Jewish children in them.

Because there are those who are building nuclear weapons, having told the world that their intention is to wipe the Jewish state off the face of the earth.

Because people like that make Pharaoh look like a nice guy.

Because getting out of the house of bondage, out of slavery in Egypt, was not the end of the story for the Jewish people, but was the beginning.

It is a story of a never-ending struggle for freedom, for dignity, for respect, for human rights, that has universal resonance and meaning — for all people, everywhere, always.
