Most Canadians would prefer to see more stay-at-home parents: new poll

Canadians want to see more stay-at-home parents, according to a new poll commissioned by the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada as it calls for governments to overhaul their approach to early childhood care. The public opinion poll found 76 per cent of respondents believe it is best that children under six be home with a parent. It also found almost two-thirds of respondents would rather see funding go directly to parents, rather than government-run daycare and all-day kindergarten.

This is the end of genetically modified crops in Denmark

Monsanto has been in the process of testing the possibilities of production of various genetically modified crops in Denmark, but it is now ended, ABC News, in collaboration with the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Denmark has reported. Poor test results and consumer resistance to GMOs has made the company drop the plan to cultivate maize in the country.

Japan makes it clear, no genetically modified wheat

Japanese authorities have cancelled a tender offer to buy wheat from the US, after unapproved genetically modified wheat was found in an Oregon, USA field. On Wednesday, the US Department of Agriculture said it had conducted a genetic test on the wheat and found that it was an experimental type produced by Monsanto Company that hadn't been approved for sale.

US: Pending home sales hit three-year high

Contracts to buy previously owned US homes rose to their highest level in three years in April. The National Association of Realtors said on Thursday its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed last month, rose 0.3 percent to 106.0, the highest reading since April 2010. The housing market's fortunes have decisively shifted for the better and it is regaining its dominance in the economy, acting as a buffer against belt-tightening in Washington.

BCCI uncertain as Srinivasan, Pawar face the heat over irregularities

New Delhi: N Srinivasan, firmly entrenched till a couple of months ago not just as the BCCI chief but as the most powerful cricket official in the world, has his reign hanging by a thread now. BCCI members from around the country are now more than merely nudging him to step aside.

But this endgame threatens to be messy. Srinivasan knows that 24 of 30 members are needed to impeach him if he refuses to quit on his own, and that number will not be achieved easily by his opponents in the board.

But with the squeeze from strong voices, how long can Srinivasan hold off? Interestingly, key figures such as Arun Jaitley, who have been silent publicly, appear to have employed members of their associations to keep the pressure on.

There is already talk in Board circles about who will take his place once Srinivasan exits. Among the names doing the rounds is Sharad Pawar, former BCCI and ICC boss.

Associations close to Pawar are already openly asking for Srinivasan's exit, and in his first public comments on Wednesday, Pawar made a pointed reference to how things would have never reached this point under his watch.

But can Pawar really make such a claim? CNN-IBN is in possession of documents that prove beyond doubt that as BCCI president in 2008, he allowed Srinivasan to purchase an IPL team in violation of rules.

A letter from January 2008 establishes how Pawar, on the advice of other BCCI members, accepted a plea from India Cements to participate in the bidding process for IPL teams. It was under Pawar that this critical constitutional amendment was made allowing a Board office bearer to own a team.

Nine months after Pawar accepted the India Cements' plea to bid for a team, the clause was altered, from saying "no administrator shall have, directly or indirectly any commercial interest in the matches and events conducted by the Board" to "no administrator shall have directly or indirectly any commercial interest in any of the events of the BCCI excluding the IPL, Champions League and T20".

Sharad Pawar's double-speak, from facilitating Srinivasan's move to bid and buy the Chennai IPL franchise, and now taking potshots at Srinivasan's presidency, isn't lost on the BCCI members who are watching with rapt attention.

And while the heat is on Srinivasan, there are many in the board who will fight tooth and nail to prevent the Maratha strongman from getting a re-run as BCCI president.

M&M says growing competition to hit market share

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd(MAHM.NS), India’s biggest sports utility vehicle (SUV) manufacturer, warned that growing competition would erode its market share after posting a forecast-beating rise in quarterly net profit.

“With so much competition in SUVs now, market share is bound to go down,” Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra’s automotive and farm equipment sectors, said on Thursday.

The flagship company of the $15.9 billion Mahindra Group builds every other SUV sold in India, but saw its share of the segment fall to 48 percent in its fiscal year 2012/13 from 56 percent a year earlier.

Mahindra will soon compete with automakers including Ford Motor Co(F.N) and Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp which plan to launch SUVs in India during the current year. Another rival is set to come from Nissan Motors and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd(MRTI.NS).

“The competitive intensity is something which is likely to go up, so to avoid losing market share it depends how fast Mahindra is able to launch new products,” said Ajay Shethiya, analyst at Mumbai-based brokerage Centrum.

Shethiya expects the company’s SUV business to grow by between 8 and 10 percent in 2013/14.

Mahindra’s net profit for its fiscal fourth quarter reached 8.89 billion rupees, against 8.74 billion a year earlier on a 12 percent rise in net sales to 103.5 billion.

Analysts had on average expected a profit of 7.62 billion rupees on revenue of 99.86 billion, according to data from Thomson Reuters Starmine.

Mahindra said automotive sales, including exports, jumped 17 percent in the year ended March 31, as strong demand for its SUVs helped defy the gloom in much of India’s car market.

Car sales in India fell an annual 6.7 percent in the 12 months to March 31, their first fall in a decade, and are expected to grow just 3 to 5 percent this year, down from an original forecast of 10 to 12 percent, an industry body has said.

Mahindra, which controls South Korean car maker Ssangyong Motor Co Ltd, said it plans to invest 75 billion rupees in its business over the next three years.

Shares in Mahindra, valued at around $10.5 billion by the market, ended 4.5 percent higher at 1,004.65 rupees in Sensex.

Djokovic set for rematch against Dimitrov at French Open

PARIS: Two years ago, Novak Djokovic entered the French Open on a 39-match winning streak dating to the previous December.

Last year, he came to Paris having won 21 consecutive matches at Grand Slam tournaments.

And in 2013? Well, Djokovic arrived having lost two of his preceding four matches, both on clay. The man responsible for one of those surprising defeats, Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, just so happens to be Djokovic's next opponent at Roland Garros.

"It's going to be a tough one for both of us, definitely," Djokovic said, looking ahead to their third-round match. "I need to be on top of my game."

Ranked and seeded No. 1 at the French Open as he tries to complete a career Grand Slam, Djokovic hasn't faced much difficulty so far, winning both of his matches in straight sets, including 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 against 83rd-ranked Guido Pella of Argentina on Thursday.

Truth is, the most vexing thing for the Serb -- and many other players -- on Day 5 of the clay-court major was the wet weather. Djokovic gestured at the dark, threatening sky between points, as if to say, "Please don't rain again. Let me finish my work first!"

"The most important thing for a player in these interruptions and rain delays is not to get frustrated mentally," Djokovic said, "because it's a very fine line. ... Your intensity is there, and suddenly they call it off."

Because of repeated rain, only 18 of Thursday's 32 scheduled singles matches were completed. Six were suspended in progress -- defending champion Maria Sharapova led Canada's Eugenie Bouchard by a set and a break when they stopped -- and eight were postponed entirely, including seven-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal against Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

All of which created quite a crammed slate for Friday.

In addition to Sharapova resuming her match, and Nadal starting his, others due on court included 17-time major champion Roger Federer against No. 30 Julien Benneteau; No. 12 Tommy Haas, who is 35, against 20-year-old American qualifier Jack Sock; No. 15 Gilles Simon of France against No. 18 Sam Querrey of the United States; No. 19 John Isner against 21-year-old Ryan Harrison in an all-U.S. matchup; and 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic against Virginie Razzano, the Frenchwoman who stunned Serena Williams in the first round last year.

If things go to plan, Djokovic and Dimitrov would meet Saturday, 3{weeks after their last match. That was in the second round of the Madrid Open, where the 21-year-old Dimitrov emerged with a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-3 victory.

Dimitrov is seeded 26th at the French Open and reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. His first-round opponent, Alejandro Falla, retired while trailing early in the second set because of stomach problems, and Dimitrov defeated Lucas Pouille of France 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-1 Thursday.

"I'm actually really looking forward to the next round," said Dimitrov, who's been learning how to deal with the paparazzi since being linked to Sharapova. "I mean, hopefully it's going to bring out the best of me."

While success at this level is still pretty new for Dimitrov, Djokovic has won six major titles, including the Australian Open in January. Djokovic has yet to win the trophy in Paris, though: He lost to Federer in the 2011 semifinals, and to Nadal in last year's final, and says the French Open is his top priority this season.

Both Djokovic and Dimitrov know that one has a big advantage when it comes to experience in big matches -- and in best-of-five-set matches.

"It's going to be very physical," Djokovic said. "All the hard work that I put into preparations for this tournament hopefully will play to my advantage and will pay off on the court."

For the second day in a row at Roland Garros, no seeded men lost Thursday. But there were some unexpectedly early departures among the women, none more so than by 2011 champion Li Na, who was seeded sixth.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Movie Name :   Yamla Pagla Deewana 2
Release Date :   7 June 2013

Genre :  Comedy , Drama

Producer : Dharmendra
Director :   Sangeeth Sivan

Music Director : Sharib-Toshi, Sachin Gupta (Aidan Hi Nachna)
Cast : Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Neha Sharma, Kristina Akheeva.

Synopsis:

The album makes an impressive start with title number "Yamla pagla deewana". Rahul Seth's rap is good, but it could've been better. The song is a rare combination of good music and apt lyrics with element of fun. Singers Sanchita Bhattacharya, Sukhwinder Singh and Shankar Mahadevan have put in their best. With dominating Punjabi flavour, the composition is different, but average.

If 'High on Punjabi flavour' has to be defined, singer Mika Singh's "Changli hai changli hai" is an ideal example of that. Replete with fast beats and whistles, the Hinglish lyrics in the song are attention grabber. A typical "road side Romeo" kind of a song, it's high on energy and beats.

INSPIRING STORY "

  Keep your dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses.

As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.

Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher.

Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’ “The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money.

You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this.

However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.”

When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”
