North, South Korea move to end rupture in ties
North and South Korea announced on Thursday they were planning to hold talks for the first time since February 2011, signalling attempts to repair ties that have been ruptured for months. Kenyan joy: Britain apologizes for colonial abuse
The wrinkled faces of the elderly Kenyans who gathered in a downtown Nairobi hotel registered gratitude, relief, and joy as Britain's high commissioner say what many waited decades to hear: Britain is sorry. The announcement in Kenya's capital took on the air of a tribal celebration -- or perhaps a joyful 50-year school reunion. Several dozen elderly Kenyans clapped hands, swayed ever so slightly, and sang joyful songs of struggle during a nearly two-hour news conference attended by British High Commissioner Christian Turner.

Switzerland: High-capacity flash charger can juice up an electric bus in under 15 seconds
TOSA's new 'flash-charging' stations can fully charge a bus in 15 seconds flat. That means the bus could be fully re-charged and ready to go in the time it takes to let people on and off at a stop. The system is being put to the test in Geneva, Switzerland in a project called Trolleybus Optimization Système Alimentation (TOSA). As each bus comes to a stop, a laser-driven arm connects the bus to the charger, giving it a 400kW boost at selected stops. Then, at the end of the bus line, the bus can take a few minutes to recharge fully for the next trip.

Modi is the only person capable of becoming India's PM, says Ramdev

New Delhi: Backing Narendra Modi's Prime Ministerial candidature for the 2014 general elections, Baba Ramdev said the Gujarat Chief Minister is the only person capable of becoming India's Prime Minister and bringing development to the country.
"He is the only person capable of becoming India's Prime Minister and bringing development in India.
So, the party people should not have any difference in opinion in this issue," Ramdev said.
Meanwhile, ahead of the BJP's two-day National Executive meeting, an extended Parliamentary Board meeting has been called on Friday in Goa to take a decision on naming Narendra Modi as the party's campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The meeting, which is likely to be held at 3 pm on Friday, will be attended by all Parliamentary Board members including LK Advani, Narendra Modi, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.
All central office bearers, state presidents and general secretaries have also been asked to be present at the meeting.
Modi's role in the next Lok Sabha election is expected to be the dominant theme of the BJP National Executive in Goa this weekend, amid a strong demand from some sections of the party for declaring him the campaign committee head.
Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said Modi should be made the face of the party because like Vajpayee, he is also acceptable to people.

Only you will know what feels right, so test the waters carefully.

Mukesh Ambani wows with Rs 1.5 lakh-crore promise

The Birla Matoshree auditorium in South Mumbai was a veritable beehive on Thursday, bustling with shareholders, media and officials of Reliance Industries (RIL). It was RIL’s 39th annual general meeting (AGM), after all.
Only, there was a marked difference in this year’s event. Unlike in recent years, no one was complaining. Indeed, shareholders were buzzing with praise and company officials were smiling.
That set the stage for a beaming Mukesh Ambani, chairman of India’s most profitable company, to announce a massive Rs1.5 lakh crore over the next three years across its verticals, to a massive applause from the house, bursting at the seams. The bulk of this money will go into RIL’s emerging businesses — retail and telecom — besides a huge petrochemicals expansion.
“Your company is investing the largest capital in India by any enterprise — public or private, Indian or foreign. This is an expression of the faith of Reliance in India and in her potential,” the chairman said in his speech, which was aptly headlined ‘Investing in India’s Future’ as against last year’s ‘Partnering for India’s New Future’.
Ambani took the occasion to announce for the first time the individual timelines for completion of various expansions of products under its core business of petchem, which, together with refining, constitute almost 90% of RIL’s revenues.
He said the company’s polyester filament yarn plant at Silvassa will be ready in the first half of this fiscal, while the PET resin plant at Dahej will be ready in the second half. This will be followed by a million tonne PTA plant in the first half of next year, followed by another plant of a similar capacity within the next six months.
The company will also commission a huge capacity in synthetic rubber this fiscal, making it one of the top five producers in terms of earnings.
He said the company’s ethylene cracker facility will make the company the world’s largest producer of LDPE, swing PE and glycol – all variants of petrochemical products.
“With the implementation of all the above projects, your company is on its way to be amongst the top five petrochemical producers in the world,” said Ambani.
In its other core portfolio of refining, Ambani said, RIL is among the top five global independent refiners already and aims to be among the top three.
In fact, even on exploration and production (E&P), where RIL had to face the heat from various stakeholders for its flagging output from the KG Basin, Ambani stressed more on its international ventures, which “indicate that Reliance is well on its way to becoming a global E&P player”.
After being battered by shareholders all of 2011 and 2012, Ambani indeed had a reason to be upbeat as 2013 had brought with it a raft of good news for the company – stellar annual results, rising revenues from shale and retail, new discovery in KG basin and a changing regulatory landscape in the country. “…I believe in reasonable period of time, regulatory issues will ease out and will be fair to us,” Ambani signed off.

Scientists criticise ‘weight is healthy’ study

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggested the overweight were less likely to die prematurely than people with a "healthy" weight.
Scientists have slammed a recent study which suggests that being overweight can lead to a longer life.
One of the experts labelled the findings a “pile of rubbish” while another said it was a “horrific message” to put out.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggested the overweight were less likely to die prematurely than people with a “healthy” weight.
Researchers at the US National Centre for Health Statistics looked at 97 studies involving nearly 2.9 million people to compare death rates with Body Mass Index (BMI) — a way of measuring obesity using a person’s weight and height.
A healthy BMI is considered to be above 18.5 and below 25.
However, overweight people (with a BMI between 25 and 30) were 6 per cent less likely to die early than those considered to have a healthy weight, the study reported.
The study said being “overweight was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality”.
Possible explanations included overweight people getting medical treatment, such as to control blood pressure, more quickly or the extra weight helping people survive being severely ill in hospital.
However, the researchers point out they looked only at deaths and not years spent free of ill-health.
“Have you ever seen a 100-year-old human being who is overweight? The answer is you probably haven’t,” Prof John Wass, vice-president of the Royal College of Physicians, said.
Prof Wass said the largest people will have died years before and pointed to health problems and higher levels of Type 2 diabetes.

Conflicting criteria stump Delhi University hopefuls
NEW DELHI: The official website of Delhi University, which is supposed to be the first-hand source of information for admission seekers, is, quite ironically, adding to confusion among them thanks to contradictions in additional criteria and inconsistencies in the titles of courses-the BCom and BA programmes having been done away in the four-year undergraduate format.
While the university earlier announced that students not having done mathematics may also pursue commerce, some colleges are not only asking for maths in Class XII but also a minimum percentage as additional criterion.
And though the university's additional eligibility criteria stated that for commerce in Lady Shri Ram College one needs a minimum of 60% in English, according to the college's additional criteria uploaded on the university website, one requires 60% in mathematics in the last qualifying examination. And there are colleges like Acharya Narendra Dev College, SGTB Khalsa and Kirori Mal which are also demanding commerce aspirants to have studied mathematics in Class XII, with Khalsa asking for at least 70% in the subject.
As if that's not enough, colleges like SGTB Khalsa, Bharti and Zakir Husain are still announcing admissions and additional criteria for the 'BCom' and 'BA' programmes on the website which have been discontinued. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College has journalism and mass communication listed though it's not offering the course.
A majority of colleges offering economics in Discipline 1 has a minimum percentage in maths. Kamala Nehru College's additional criterion for economics is at least 80% in maths, while for Kirori Mal it's 70%. An economics aspirant for LSR not only needs to have 80% in maths but also 60% in English. At SRCC, too, 70% in maths in Class XII is mandatory.

Champions Trophy: West Indies take on mercurial Pakistan
LONDON: Former champions West Indies will lock horns with the incredibly unpredictable Pakistan in what promises to be a high-voltage group B Champions Trophy clash at The Oval on Friday.
The Caribbean team, which won the title in 2004 besides finishing runners-up in 1998 and 2006, is high on star power with the intimidating presence of an in-form Chris Gayle being a massive confidence-booster.
Pakistan, on the other hand, is a team full of greenhorns despite being led by the oldest player in the event -- a 39-year-old Misbah-ul-Haq.
A look at the line-ups would make the West Indies slight favourites for Friday's match. Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and Kemar Roach have the ability to just knock out the opposition attack with their power-hitting.
In fact, the troika of Gayle, Pollard and Samuels displayed good form at the recent IPL and would be looking to carry the confidence into the Champions Trophy even though the format would be different. Skipper and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is another player who can be a match-winner on his day.
Gayle's aggregate of 695 in Champions Trophy matches is the highest among all batsmen.
On the bowling front, the outfit has quite a few tricksters in the line-up, including the surprise package of pacer Jason Holder.
The youngest in the team is 6'8" tall and could prove to be a decisive factor in the seaming conditions with his medium pace.
Among the slower bowlers, Sunil Narine has been a proven performer and would be expected to work his magic here after a stupendous IPL performance.
The Caribbeans were, however, handed a sound thrashing by the Australians in their most recent ODI assignment at the beginning of the year and it remains to be seen whether they can regroup.
Interestingly, the West Indians have the record of most number of matches won in the Champions Trophy, having registered 12 victories.
Pakistan, in contrast, have no big match-winners to boast of after the ouster of senior players such as Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan. Their pace spearhead Umar Gul was ruled out due to injury.
But if any team is capable of doing exactly what is not expected of it, it is Pakistan. Misbah's men are considered mercurial and temperamental but talented and passionate nonetheless.
It remains to be seen which bunch turns up at the Oval tomorrow to match the West Indian flair.
On the batting front, the Pakistanis would look for good starts from the experienced Mohammed Hafeez.
In the absence of Afridi, Kamran Akmal would be expected to perform the pinch-hitter's role lower down with Misbah and Shoaib Malik being the backbone of a fragile middle-order.
Their bowling attack, however, looks interesting with three left-arm pacers, including the 7'1" tall Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz. The two right-armers are Asad Ali and Ehsan Adil.
In the absence of Gul, senior off-spinner Saeed Ajmal remains the most experienced bowler and he would be expected to work his magic.
In the overall analysis, both the teams have a reputation of revving up the mundane and it would be interesting to see which of the two manages to get going on Friday.

" INSPIRING STORY "
Little Boy’s Love for his Family
I was walking around in a Big Bazar store making shopping, when I saw a Cashier talking to a boy couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 years old. The Cashier said, “I’m sorry, but you don’t have enough money to buy this doll.” Then the little boy turned to me and asked, “Uncle, are you sure I don’t have enough money?”
I counted his cash and replied, “You know that you don’t have enough money to buy the doll, my dear.” The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to. “It’s the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much . I wanted to Gift her for her Birthday. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.” His eyes were so sad while saying this.
“My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.” My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and said, “I told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall.” Then he showed me a very nice photo of him, where he was laughing. He then told me “I want mommy to take my picture with her so my sister won’t forget me, I love my mommy and I wish she doesn’t have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister.”
Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. “Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll?” He said, “OK, I hope I do have enough.” I added some of my money to his with out him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.
The little boy said, “Thank you God for giving me enough money!” Then he looked at me and added, “I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give It to my sister. He heard me! I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn’t dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose. My mommy loves white roses.”
I finished my shopping in a totally different state from when I started. I couldn’t get the little boy out of my mind. Then I remembered a local news paper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state.
The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the news paper that the young woman had passed away. I couldn’t stop myself. I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was exposed for people to see and make last wishes before her burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed for ever…
The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him…
