Housing plans lift Canada building permits in April

Widespread plans to build apartment buildings and condominiums lifted the value of Canadian building permits in April by 10.5 per cent from March, Statistics Canada said on Wednesday, defying market expectations of a 4 per cent drop in permits. It was the fourth straight month of gains in building permits, an early indicator of construction activity, after a downturn that began in mid-2012.

World Environment Day

The theme for this year's World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save. Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. Making informed decisions means that you purposefully select foods that have less of an environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process. Choosing to buy locally can also mean that foods are not flown halfway across the world and therefore limit emissions.

US: Grass-roots movement comes of age to force GMO labelling

With a deal that revives a bill requiring the labelling of genetically engineered foods, Connecticut's legislative leaders Saturday acknowledged a movement that has muscled its way from the scientific fringe to political mainstream. Senate and House leaders announced a bipartisan compromise that is expected to make Connecticut the first state to require labelling of foods with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

India: Services activity picks up pace in May

Indian services activity expanded last month at its fastest pace since February as burgeoning new orders drove optimism to a five-month high, a business survey showed on Wednesday. The HSBC Markit Services Purchasing Managers' Index, based on a survey of around 400 companies, rose to 53.6 last month from 50.7 in April. Services make up almost 60 per cent of Asia's third largest economy.

Assam: AGP sends Rs 500 crore legal notice to Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The Asom Gana Parishad has sent a legal notice to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for a whopping Rs 500 crore. The party says it will sue Rahul for defamation after he alleged that the AGP came to power in Assam with help from insurgents.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had also endorsed Rahul's statement saying that AGP had links with insurgent groups. The party has given Rahul Gandhi 15 days to apologise for his purported remarks.

The AGP youth wing President Kishore Upadhaya told PTI "If the Congress Vice President fails to apologise, we will seek a compensation of Rs 500 crore for damaging the reputation of the party whose members were involved in the six year Assam agitation against foreigners," he said.

"We have given Gandhi 15 days to respond to our notice failing which we will initiate a criminal defamation case against him," he said.

AGP President Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had also earlier stated that the party strongly condemned Gandhi's comments and was consulting experts for taking legal action against him.

According to a WikiLeaks report published in the media last month, Rahul had reportedly told a US diplomat in 2006 that India during his father late Rajiv Gandhi's prime ministership (1984-1989) had given a separatist group a chance to form the government in Assam and the US should follow the same model with Hamas.

West Bengal government may ask Nokia Siemens to vacate Kolkata factory

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government is likely to reclaim a prized 9 acre plot from Nokia Siemens Networks following the European gearmaker's recent decision to shut its loss-making Kolkata telecom factory on July 31 as part of a global decision to sell non-profitable wireline assets worldwide to cut losses.

Though NSN is an equal joint venture between Finland's Nokia and Germany's Siemens, the land belongs to Siemens, which was allotted the nine acre plot on a 99-year long term lease about 15 years ago by the state government well before the formation of NSN in 2007.

"The state government will shortly write to Siemens AG to vacate the land, post-shutdown of NSN's telecom factory since it has failed to come up with an alternate land utilisation plan," said a top state bureaucrat.

The West Bengal government has repeatedly urged Siemens to honour an earlier pledge of setting up an IT-cum-telecom park on the NSN factory land, post-shutdown of the telecom factory.

"Since Siemens has not come up with any concrete plans on what it proposes to do with the land even after NSN's closure notice, we will shortly ask them to either set up the IT-cum-telecom park or vacate the premises as there is a serious paucity of quality land for greenfield tech ventures in Kolkata," said the official quoted above.

Siemens declined to reply to ET's queries on what it planned to do with the factory land, post-shutdown of the NSN factory. "As a policy, we do not comment on market speculation," said a company spokesman.

The stakes are big since the state government is inundated with corporate applications for this prime piece of real estate in the heart of town, whose valuation has shot up in recent years. While Siemens was given the 9 acre plot for a pittance (roughly Rs 32 lakh per acre) by the state government, property consultants peg its current valuation at roughly Rs 300 crore.

Satendra Singh, who heads NSN India's manufacturing operations, declined to comment on the fate of the Kolkata factory land, post-July 31 closure. "The lands belongs to our JV partner, Siemens, and it is for them to take a final call," he said.

NSN had attributed its decision to close the Kolkata landline products factory due to a rapidly dwindling order-book position coupled with the company's refocus on mobile broadband.

The Finnish-German telecom vendor's decision to close its landline products factory in Kolkata is linked to its global decision to cut 17,000 jobs worldwide as part of a restructuring plan aimed at cutting losses. In India, bulk of the cull involves wireline assets deemed non-core and out of sync with NSN's focus on mobile broadband and services.

How often should you eat?

In our race to be the biggest loser, most of us go after different diets. The trusted and age-old three-meals-a-day concept works for some, while others swear by the new-age eight-meals-a-day. Most of us have been brought up on the notion that having untimely in-between meal snacks, is one of the major causes of weight gain.

Of late, however, a number of trainers, nutritionists and dieticians have come up with the 'six-to-eight-meals-a-day' plan. And many Bollywood actors and actresses claim that following such diets have made them the biggest losers. They believe that in-between snacks help them stay slim and this regular intake also boosts metabolism. However, there are health gurus and trainers who believe that eating too many meals may just work against you and increase your weight. Read on to find out what the experts have to say...

Eat six to eight meals a day
Eat to burn! This can be one of the easiest and most reliable ways to ensure fat loss. Digestion itself is a calorie-burning activity. For every calorie you ingest, your body uses some to burn what you are eating. The question is, how do you make this wonderful feature of your body work for you?

This is the essential principle behind the practice of frequent eating where eating at shorter intervals (six to eight meals a day or more!) enables your body to use more calories to aid digestion. When you constantly provide fuel to your body, it means you are also tickling your body to work. Keep working, keep burning. This is called the thermogenic effect of food and it is not only an incredibly smart way of losing weight, it also helps you increase your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

I like to call this the Internal Workout — because by continually making it work for digestion, you're giving your body a workout. And while you may not be able to see the furious digestive activity going on in your body at any point in time, trust me, your body is working way harder than if you eat at longer intervals (three-to-four meals a day).
- says Pooja Makhija, Consulting Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian

More meals means less stored fat

Eating six to eight meals a day rather than three, is better because it boosts metabolism, controls blood sugar levels and helps in weight management. Consuming three meals increases the likelihood that one will start an exercise regime with a low blood sugar level. For instance, if we eat lunch around noon, generally our second meal of the day, we would not have much energy for an optimal, calorie-burning workout in the evening.

On the other hand, if we follow a six-meal-a-day plan and have a small meal around noon and another meal around 3 pm, our blood sugar level would be more stable, providing us with more energy for our workout.

Cortisol, a hormone, breaks down body fat. However, if we eat a large, high-calorie meal, cortisol is produced in large quantities, but transports the fat from under the skin to deep within the abdominal cavity. This increases the risk of chronic diseases including abdominal obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Incorporating a six-meal-a-day plan into one's routine decreases the magnitude of cortisol production.

Eating within 30 minutes of every exercise session enables our muscles to maximally replenish the glucose we used during the workout. Consuming another meal two hours after the post-workout meal further enhances post-exercise recovery and replenishment.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22
There might be extra confusion today in a business matter, particularly if you have a partner or are in an industry where you see clients regularly. You might think the other person isn't being forthcoming about a certain situation and if so, you may begin to lose faith in him or her. Be wary of a partner who promises more than you think that person can deliver. While there might not be any intentional deceit going on, disappointment is possible.

Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
This could be an incredibly positive day in business and finances for you. A brilliant golden triangle in the sky between Venus, Saturn, and Neptune will bless you today. You might benefit from gorgeous praise or an award from your boss. You might also secure a freelance assignment that pays well and helps further your career. You'll also enjoy peace and harmony at the office with co-workers. Enjoy this moment.

Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Scorpio
Although you'll feel quite optimistic in matters of the heart, be aware that you might inadvertently send a mixed message to a sweetheart or potential suitor. One possibility is that you'll be out socially, and someone will be certain that you're flirting with him or her when in reality, you thought you were just being polite and friendly. If you're attached and out together, this might ignite a jealous response.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
There might be a certain amount of confusion between you and your partner about a domestic situation. This could be anything from not being able to agree on a decorating decision to something more significant, such as a family dilemma. There's also a possibility that you and your mate will discover that someone in your family is going through a difficult time and needs your mutual support.

Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
capricon.jpgA talk with your partner might be trickier than you expect. You might inadvertently dominate the conversation and cut your partner's thoughts off mid-sentence. If this happens, your mate will not appreciate it. There likely will be a subject you discuss that pushes your buttons. Fortunately, even though your partner will see this, he or she will encourage you to communicate in a way that allows you to open up and express your feelings.

Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
aquarius.jpg Everything likely will flow perfectly in your work and financial life now. Enjoy every moment of glory. Venus in your workaday sector will help you secure a job that pays well. Today's link from Venus to Neptune in your earned income sector suggests a creative job that highlights one of your more imaginative talents may be on the horizon. Even better is that this job may get you recognition from a higher-up.

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
Now that Venus is in your romance sector and will be until June 27, you will have spectacular prospects for attracting love your way. Today, Venus will connect to both Saturn and Neptune, creating a beautiful golden triangle in the sky. In your case, this event will be especially lucky, as it could very well be the catalyst that helps you find true love. Don't listen to a friend's negative comments about anyone you're attracted to now. He or she may be green-eyed.

Delhi University admissions: Over 42,000 forms sold on first day

NEW DELHI: As the debate continues over the new four-year undergraduate programme, the Delhi University on Wednesday sold over 42,000 forms on the first day of the admission process while over 7,000 students registered online.

Braving the heat, thousands of students queued up at the 18 colleges where the forms were being sold and submitted.

Traffic jams were reported at DU's North campus as eager students rushed to get their forms on the first day itself.

"42,860 forms were sold on the first day today. Out of which, 35,208 forms were of General and OBC category and 7,608 of SC/ST and Physically Disabled. Last year, the figure stood at approximately 30,000. The number of forms received manually at counters today was 3,724," dean of Students' welfare JM Khurana said.

"Likewise, the online registration has been welcomed by the candidates seeking admission in the Delhi University. At 7pm, the number touched 7,385 which is almost three times that of last year. Candidates should make best use of online facility which is available 24 hours till the last day of registration of forms (June 19)," he said.

Meanwhile, a section of students complained that the website denied access once they clicked on the online registration link.

Deputy dean of students' welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja said the students might have faced inconvenience for "a few minutes" as the server had slowed down after a large number of students tried to register at the same time.

"Around noon the server had slowed down for a little while as there were 34,000 people accessing the website together. We have the records...The online registration was working smoothly and there was never a technical glitch."

This year's Delhi University admissions are being held in the middle of a controversy as several academicians have raised objections to the new four-year programme.

There is always burden of expectation on Team India: MS Dhoni

CARDIFF: There seem to be two faces to Mahendra Singh Dhoni these days — one which lights up if you're talking cricket and the other that sulks if you refer to the recent scandals in Indian cricket. More specifically, questions about Chennai Super Kings.

On Wednesday, the eve of the first match of the Champions Trophy between India and South Africa, he was asked about the tournament and cricket. Naturally, his face lit up.

"If you don't have fans, people ask if you're missing them. When you have fans, people talk of the burden of expectation. So I think when it comes to the Indian team, there is always pressure or the burden of expectation," he said.

Pressure and burden are words he's avoided uttering ever since the Indian T20 league got over and the team left for England to play the Champions Trophy. "We always welcome the double-edged sword, you can say. We just have to balance it the right way," he added.

It is difficult to suggest what kind of pressure or burden Dhoni and his team might be going through at this moment. You can't ask him to explain because the BCCI has gagged him. So, he restricts himself only to the cricket. "We have to do all the right things over again and we hope it goes (the tournament) in our favour," he said.

Dinesh Karthik and Umesh Yadav's current form, the new One-day rules, the absence of Jacques Kallis from the opposition ranks and the role that fast bowlers might play in Cardiff are on top of his mind.

"Karthik is technically sound. He's someone who should bat at 4 or 5, 3 also but definitely not at 6 and 7," he says, explain the slot in which the batsman might be asked to play. "I've always stressed that players need to bat in specialist positions," said Dhoni.

As for the attack, he's convinced that Yadav, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma, can do the job for India.

"Yadav is the quickest in our side so he is someone who can get on top of the batsmen, swing the ball and be really effective. He just has to maintain his composure and not look for that extra pace," he said.
