North Korean farmers planting rice with profits in mind
North Korean farmers knee deep in muddy paddies across the country have a new incentive during this year's crucial rice planting season: possible bonuses that are part of an economic shift echoing ally China's steps three decades ago toward embracing capitalism. Any surplus can be kept by the rice team to sell, barter, or distribute -- a change from past policies that required farmers to turn all harvests over to the state. North Korea formally announced the policy, and its expansion to include factories and other enterprises, a day after holding a plenary session of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party.

Vegetarian diet tied to fewer deaths over time
People who limit how much meat they eat and stick to mostly fruits and vegetables are less likely to die over any particular period of time, according to a new US study. 'I think this adds to the evidence showing the possible beneficial effect of vegetarian diets in the prevention of chronic diseases and the improvement of longevity,' said Dr Michael Orlich, the study's lead author from Loma Linda University in California.

BJP divide over Narendra Modi sharpens as Advani adds another hurdle

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party's leadership crisis has taken another twist. Now senior leader LK Advani has put a rider on making Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi the campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
He wants the BJP to form a parallel committee for the assembly elections later this year.
Sources say that Advani has told BJP President Rajnath Singh that both the committees be formed together. One poll campaign committee headed by Modi for 2014 general polls and one election management committee for five state assembly polls later this year.
Sources say former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari's name was proposed for the second committee but he declined to take the offer. Now the question is as to who will head the second committee as Advani is insisting on the formation of the two committees simultaneously.
It looks like the BJP leaders remain divided over Narendra Modi with Arun Jaitley stating that Modi is the most popular leader of the party. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Jaitley said that a national role for Modi will be decided when it's time.
"I can only tell you that the ground level support for Mr Modi in the country and within the party is huge and everybody acknowledges that," Jaitley said.
Sources have also told CNN-IBN that BJP President Rajnath Singh is now attempting to build a consensus on appointing Modi as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and an announcement is likley at the national executive in Goa.
When asked about reports saying Advani called Modi arrogant and praised Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Jaitley said, "I don't think Mr Advani ever said that Mr Modi is arrogant. I think the problem is with analysing Mr Advani's statements.
If he goes to MP and compliments the CM for the good things he has done the media would like to see it as contra-distinction to somebody, in the same speech he has also said nice things about Gujarat's development."
On a question about Advani's PM ambitions, Jaitley said, "He is a very senior person in the party and has been a kind of guide to the party all these years.
He is among the two senior leaders who guided the party and brought us into power and therefore, his contribution to the party can never be understated.
Now today if he writes or speaks, we listen with rapt attention every word he speaks.
I think it's unfair to start imputing motives to that comments when he makes them, he is expected to be frank with the party and that's the style he has adopted over the years."

Aries March 21 to April 19 External distractions and internal daydreaming may make it challenging to focus this week as your mind will seem to head off in many directions at once. Giving yourself a bit of mental downtime to space out may bring relief, as well as spending time in creative rather than solely intellectual pursuits to channel any restless energy. Try to put off any important meetings, conversations, or presentations where you are running the show until after the weekend, if you are concerned.
Taurus April 20 to May 20 You may receive information either externally from someone or in an internal epiphany that confronts you with something you need to hear. Although it may be intense or jarring, this information can bring realizations that allow you to break through old ways of thinking about a certain subject. Although the information may feel threatening, don't cling to old truths in an effort to stabilize. If you can keep from slamming a mental door shut, epiphanies will continue to tumble out through the weekend.
Gemini May 21 to June 20
With Mars now traveling through Gemini, you may feel ready to tackle anything, and may even be restless and impatient to get things going, especially if you have to wait for anything or anyone else. Mars is preparing to square off with Neptune, which may have you all ready to go with no clear destination. As Neptune slows to change direction, you may find yourself a little confused about your own and need to evaluate the big picture once more so you don't go in circles.
Cancer June 21 to July 22 A friend or partner may say something to you that cuts right to your core. Try thinking analytically about what was said. Was it untruthful? Was it his or her intention to hurt you? If it was meant in the best way, see if you can put this feedback to a useful purpose in how you go forward. If not, ignoring negativity may be the best way to put it behind you. Either way, if you are hurt or angry, cool off until after June 8 so you don't say something impulsive.
Leo July 23 to Aug. 22
Something or someone may be the vehicle for reminding you just what matters as Venus, Saturn, and Neptune prepare a celestial love nest in the water signs. It's the small, simple things today that will make all the difference, not only giving them but especially receiving and noticing them. Focus on what's working smoothly in your life and you'll find it. Like the proverbial butterfly's wing, a simple tweak to your perspective can affect your entire outlook, and that's especially true now.

Hindustan Unilever's Rs 1,000 crore club swells; Dove, Pond's, Clinic Plus join in FY13
MUMBAI: Hindustan UnileverBSE -0.11 % now owns ten Rs 1,000-crore plus brands after Dove, Pond's and Clinic Plus crossed the mark in annual sales last fiscal, making it perhaps the first instance of three brands a firm joining the elite club in the same year.
The trio have joined Rin, Surf Excel, Wheel, Brooke Bond, LuxBSE -0.11 %, Lifebuoy and Fair & Lovely in the Rs 1,000-crore club that accounted for more than 60% of Hindustan Unilever's annual sales of Rs 25,810 crore last year.
The country's largest FMCG company has three-dozen brands in its portfolio.
While its largest brand, Wheel, took almost three decades to hit the Rs1,000-crore sales mark first in 2005, Dove has now become the fastest brand to match this feat, reaching the landmark in two decades after its launch in 1993.
In fact, with sales of Rs100 crore in 2007, the personal care brand has grown ten times in just over five years as it transformed from a bathing bar launched in 1993 to virtually all new age categories such as conditioners, deodorants, hair-oil, body and face wash.
"Dove is leading the agenda of driving premiumisation," an HULBSE -0.11 % spokesperson said.
This focus on premium offerings helped Hindustan UnileverBSE -0.11 % post its highest operating margin in a decade at 20% for the year ended March 2013.
No wonder, two premium brands — Pond's and Dove —crossed the Rs1,000-crore mark in the same year.
"The categories of the future are what we are talking about, all of them are more aspirational and more premium.
If you accept the fact that the general trend is going to be uptrading and premiumisation in the market, every category will see the trend," Hindustan Unilever CEO Nitin Paranjpe said while declaring the annual results last month.

Boost nutrition intake with salads
Easy-to-prepare summer salads can help you feel cool in the soaring temperatures, suggest chefs, who recommend nutritious and light preparations to beat the heat.
Two chefs share recipes of summer salads.
"You can put vegetables or meat of your choice (in your salad). A well-constituted salad has Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Vitamin A. All the nutrients help to increase your immunity and fight diseases," executive sous chef Danish Ashraf at Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel, said.
He suggests something as light as a Mixed Leaf Salad.
"Wash and clean lettuce and basil and then put them in cold water for five minutes. Drain out the water and reserve them in a bowl. Then take clean cherry tomatoes and cut them in half. Apple also needs to be sliced," he said.
For this salad's dressing, Ashraf advised to whisk olive oil, mustard and honey together. "Then add salt and crushed black pepper, and adjust seasoning according to taste," he added.
In the end, combine lettuce, cherry tomatoes and apple in a basin, and then add dressing and toss gently. "Add toasted walnut to it and serve cold," he added.
Chef Dinesh Kapri, executive assistant manager at Park Plaza in Gurgaon, shares an interesting way to use raw papaya in a salad preparation.
For this, you need grated raw papaya, thinly sliced tomato, finely sliced cow pea or lobhia, crushed green chillies, crushed roasted peanuts, sugar, tamarind pulp, chilli powder, soy sauce, lemon juice, chopped coriander and salt to taste.
"Toss all ingredients together and make sure you do it at least an hour before serving chilled. This way you can enjoy all the flavours," said Kapri.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22
You may have a clear goal to get you where you want to go, but others may not be as sure. While Mars and Neptune square off, you may be confronted with doubts from a person in your life whose opinion you value or is relevant to the nature of your goal. Be careful about how much they influence you; staying humble enough to allow feedback can help you clarify what you want to do, but too much can cripple you with insecurity.
Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22 You may have a tricky time tempering passion with practicality while Mars and Neptune square off just as Neptune turns around for a temporary backward jog through the zodiac. While your enthusiasm for an idea may be strong and clear, how it can work in real life may not be. Don't assume that if you have doubts it means that there is no merit or truth to your vision; it may be that it needs to simmer to reach full maturity. Time will tell.
Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
As Mercury prepares to celestially arm wrestle Pluto and Uranus, you may experience a series of epiphanies if you are willing to think radically. Exercise your natural ability to take in and accept challenging truths, truths that others may likely think too taboo or uncomfortable, and you may see an idea or problem from a totally different perspective.
Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21 You may soon have one or two personal realizations or receive information from someone that sheds a negative light on a particular financial arrangement you are involved in. A friend or partner may have ideas about how you should deal with the situation, but don't be too quick to agree with them or follow their advice if you have doubts. You may have a spontaneous idea as Mercury and Uranus connect, but don't act impulsively unless you're willing to take a risk that may not pay off.
Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
Although it's sometimes hard for you to accept support from others due to your high level of independence, your small group of loved ones will prove to be a great support to you now if you let them. Don't be afraid to share your thoughts, feelings, and burdens with someone special. Even if you don't take the advice or share his or her perspective, honest conversation with someone you trust may bring you both closer now.
Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
A work project may be ready to bloom, especially if you've invested a lot of time in it and are ready to show off! If not, the harmonious meeting of creative Venus along with hard-working Saturn and inspired Neptune signals a fruitful time to begin a labor of love. In your financial life, keep an eye on impulsive spending from now through the weekend if you're trying to watch your budget.
Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
You may feel pressure or stress, especially on the home front, as Mars and Neptune align in a tense relationship. If confronting it directly seems overwhelming or as though it may exacerbate the problem, find an outlet to channel your personal creativity that's just for your enjoyment to bring yourself back into a peaceful state. A hands-on project may be just what you need, but be careful with sharp objects in your hands if you are distraught with Mercury and Uranus squaring off through the weekend!

Rajasthan University admissions to kick-off from June 10
JAIPUR: Rajasthan University is likely to kick start its admission process for the undergraduate programmes from June 10.
The university officials said that the admission forms will also be available online.
The first cut-off list is expected to be out by June 20 and is likely to be followed by the second and third cut-off lists before June 30.
The academic session 2013-14 will begin from July 6.
Owing to improved performances by students in Class 12 CBSE and RBSE results, the cut-off is set to soar by at least 2-3%.
The university is expecting to receive 60,000 application forms against 9,000 seats.
Anticipating a rise in applications, the university has already announced a 20% increase in the number of seats in its constituent colleges- Maharaja's College, Maharani's College, Commerce College, Rajasthan College, Law College I and Law College II.
Commerce is emerging as the most popular subject among students as it promises lucrative career prospects in finance and management. For admission into any commerce course in any college, the aggregate marks need to be at least 70%, said experts. At Maharani's College, the cut-off for its popular B.Com course was 91.3% last year.
Demand for pure sciences has been on a wane, and educationists don't expect any miracle this time too. "Graduation in science has lost sheen owing to the increased number of engineering seats in the state," said Vidhya Jain, principal, Maharani's College.
Humanities stream too is not finding takers and according to colleges it's difficult to get even 100 seats filled.
Several colleges, therefore, are offering short-term courses from this session to give arts students an advantage in the competitive world.
RU has made special arrangements for admission seekers from other parts of the state.
Complete information related to admissions will be available on the website before June 10. Students also have the option of filling up their admission forms online.
"RU will set up admission counters to give information on various courses and the fee structure at counselling sessions," said the RU admission committee.

Srinivasan eligible to attend ICC meet
CARDIFF: The city of London plays host to the annual conference of the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the end of this month. The agenda for the conference isn't out as yet. But one thing that all member boards will be eyeing keenly in the run-up to that three-day conference is who the BCCI decides to send as its representative.
The president of the Indian cricket board, N Srinivasan, has decided to stay away from the chair till the time the ACSU and the police probe into the betting and spot-fixing scandal is complete. In his place, former BCCI and ICC chief Jagmohan Dalmiya has taken temporary control.
The BCCI secretary has resigned, the treasurer is contemplating whether to stay away or return and the Chief Operating Officer of India's Twenty20 league, Sundar Raman, who attended the ICC's chief executive committee meeting in 2011, is presently busy helping the probe.
Reports suggest that the BCCI has already made way for Srinivasan, who is still the president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and also one of the directors of the sport's world governing body, to attend the ICC meet.
Technically, Srinivasan can attend the meeting despite his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan - released on bail by the Mumbai crime branch after getting arrested on charges of betting and being in contact with illegal bookmakers - being probed by various departments. The ICC ethics code, which primarily deals with corruption, says a director shall be in breach of this code if his immediate family member - spouse, sibling or children - has a controlling or substantial interest in a betting business or is employed by someone with a similar interest.
Gurunath, by virtue of being Srinivasan's son-in-law, is not his immediate family member (a relationship that does not figure in the ICC clause) and his interests in the betting business are still under probe. That gives Srinivasan complete rights to attend the conference in London because he is not in direct violation of the code.
The BCCI can always appoint someone to attend the meeting in case an interim president or its appointed director in the ICC cannot be there. A source said that only if one of the other directors on the ICC board raises the issue of conflict of interest — given the nature of the controversy involving Srinivasan's son-in-law and his company India Cements' ownership of the Chennai Super Kings franchise — can the matter be brought up for discussion.
However, the managing director of India Cements has always preferred to have a vice-like grip over administration and it is unlikely he'll agree to be cowed down by any opposition whatsoever. Is there another controversy in the making here?
