US stocks: Dow ends at record as central banks reassure Wall St
US stocks rose on Tuesday, with the Dow closing at yet another record high, in the wake of Wall Street's first three-day losing streak of the year, after central banks reassured investors that they will keep policies designed to foster global growth. Consumer confidence was the strongest in May in over five years, while home prices accelerated in March by the most in nearly seven years. The reports showed the US economy's resilience despite the pinch of belt-tightening from automatic cuts in federal spending.

Economic gains lift US confidence to a five-year high
Home prices are surging. Job growth is strengthening. And stocks are setting record highs. All of which explains why Americans are more hopeful about the economy than at any other point in five years. Consider Michael Quintos, head of a Chicago advertising agency that helps small businesses market themselves through social media. Quintos sees more optimism at work and among friends and relatives. 'A year ago, I had more friends asking me if I knew anybody who was hiring,' he says. 'Now I have more people who are hiring asking me if I know anyone looking for a job.'

Rajya Sabha polls in Assam, PM's victory certain

Guwahati: Polling for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam will be held on Thursday with the victory of Prime Minister and Congress candidate Manmohan Singh certain in one of the seats.
Singh's victory is certain as he is the only contestant for the first preference votes of 78 Congress MLAs in the 126-member Assembly, while Santius Kujur of Congress and AIUDF's Aminul Islam are vying for the second seat.
The Prime Minister's four sets of nomination papers endorsed by 40 MLAs submitted under oath to the Returning Officer on May 15 at the Assembly were found in order on scrutiny day on May 23.
Singh had filed a fresh affidavit two days before scrutiny correcting his age in his nomination papers as 80 years and not 82 years.
Polling would be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Assembly and votes would be counted the same day at 5 pm with the election process completed before June 3 next as per the Election Commission of India May 13 notification.
All arrangements have been completed for voting by the legislators for the second seat contestants, assembly sources said on Wednesday.
The All India United Democratic Front's (AIUDF) is the single largest Opposition party in the House with 18 seats.
Kujur is an adivasi leader from the Christian community who had contested the last assembly polls from Panery in Udalguri district, while Islam is AIUDF's General Secretary and an advocate in the Gauhati High Court.
The Opposition BJP with five MLAs have decided to abstain from the polls as they support the candidature of neither contestants.

Aries March 21 to April 19 You may have an animated conversation with your partner today as you discuss various responsibilities. You may text each other back and forth, trying to work out a suitable plan for later in the day or simply trying to figure out a communication mix-up. Either way, you may find that an open approach does the best job in working your way through the topics. You may both have strong opinions, so be mindful of being too inflexible.
Taurus April 20 to May 20 This may be an excellent time to do some background work on your bank account. A simple perusal of your balances and expenditures could lead you in a new direction that will allow you to grow more effectively. The same may be true for charitable giving. You may find that if you donate just a small portion of your income, you could solve a problem for someone else in some meaningful manner. All it may take is a little saving here and a little giving there.
Gemini May 21 to June 20
Last week you may have had to focus quite a bit on your private, romantic life when news from (or about) someone you've been dating proved upsetting. Or you may have been focused on one of your children or a creative project, but if so, again, news was likely to have been stressful. This week will bring a needed respite and bring a number of positive developments. In Monday, April 1, a friend may be helpful to you in an outstanding way, thanks to the interplay of the Sun and Jupiter in Gemini.
Cancer June 21 to July 22 There could be something your intuition will tell you that simply refuses to quit. It may be that you have a dream or two about ideas that you never considered before. This may be an opportune time to pay heed to the ideas that drift through your quiet times. In other words, pay attention to the creative spirit inside that may be tapping on your shoulder, asking you to listen. You may want to trust your gut on this.
Leo July 23 to Aug. 22
You may be in the midst of a discussion about your home or family matters. The dialogue may revolve around getting things done and bringing plans to conclusion. This may be something as easy as choosing a new wallpaper or as complex as stabilizing your family budget. Either way, the operative theme should be about being open and responsible in all forms of communication. If you take a forthright and obliging manner, you should find the best solution.

S&P upgrades RIL on greater clarity in strategy and better competitive position
MUMBAI: Global rating agency Standard & Poor's Ratings Services (S&P) has upgraded Reliance IndustriesBSE -1.00 % (RIL) long-term corporate credit rating by a notch to BBB+, which is an investment grade rating, from BBB, the earlier rating. However, the outlook has been kept at negative.
"We have upgraded RIL, because we believe that the company's strategy to grow organically will strengthen its competitive position, and support its profitability," said Andrew Wong, credit analyst at Standard & Poor's.
"RIL's explanation of its growth strategy removes the uncertainty, regarding the company's use of its high cash balance," Wong added.
RIL currently has cash worth 82,000 crore on its books. The company is planning to spend more than $30 billion on expansion over the next three years in core businesses such as refining, petrochemical, and exploration and production (E&P).
"The planned capital spending is also likely to result in better operating performance for RIL over the next three-four years," said Wong.
The negative outlook on RIL is because of the outlook on the sovereign credit rating on India (unsolicited rating BBB-/Negative/A-3).
Meanwhile, leading foreign brokerage houses have upgraded RIL's stock after it announced a significant gas discovery off the east coast of India.
Broking firms say RIL's partnership with British Petroleum (BP) is starting to pay off, and this is likely to further boost gas production from the KG basin.
"RIL's partnership with BP is starting to pay off. We believe the discovery in KG basin is likely to renew interest for offshore exploration, where RIL-BP JV has dominant infrastructure capabilities. We have upgraded the stock to outperform, and increase our price target to 960," said Neil Beveridge, senior analyst at Bernstein in a note.
Brokerages are rerating RIL's exploration and production (E&P) business. Earlier, they had turned bearish on the stock, after gas production from KG basin dropped to 15 mmscmd from an estimated 60 mmscmd.
"RIL's announcement of gas discovery looks significant. We believe the discovery in KG basin strengthens our view that RIL's E&P business is turning around," said Nilesh Banerjee, analyst at Goldman Sachs in a note.
Analysts say with the government's policy expected to shift towards market-driven gas pricing over the next 2-3 years, gas prices would rise to around $8/mmbtu.
"The government approval for a hike in natural gas prices during FY14 would be a key catalyst for the stock, as it will aid development of over 4 tcf of recoverable resources in KG-D6," said Harshad Katkar, research analyst at Deutsche Bank in a note.

5 secrets to maintain a steady weight

Now that you have reached your weight loss goal, we are sure you wouldn't want to slip down the slipper slope of weight gain again.
The real task of managing your weight lies ahead. So, what will be your plan of action? The most pivotal point to note here is that you have to make your weight loss a permanent one. For doing so, today, Dr. Sukhvinder Singh Saggu, Sr Consultant Laparoscopic, Gastro & Obesity surgeon at Fortis Jessa Ram Hospital, New Delhi, gives us his insights on the top 5 secrets for maintaining a steady weight.
Get exercise in unexpected ways. To maintain the ideal weight, for men and women, one needs to be active in their whole day. Ideally, it is recommended to burn at least 2000 calories per day for men & 1600 calories for women.
There are several ways to burn your calories. For example, if men and women wash their cars, an activity that takes at least 30 minutes, it easily burns approximately 300 calories. Similarly, instead of using elevators/lift, if they use stairs, they will burn upto 100 calories, and so on.
Don't try to be perfect. Maintaining weight or losing weight should not be a short duration target. It should be an on-going activity, which needs to be achieved slowly and in a steady manner. It should be pursued with the intent to learn, rather than the attitude that declares it as learned or perfect.
Keep fizzy drinks at bay as much as you can. Surely, soft drinks and other carbonated drinks need to be on check. If you are on your way to being a fit person and want to live your life healthier, then stay away from fizzy drinks as much as you can. Instead, go for home-made lemonade, fresh fruit juice or prepare your own ice tea. Carbonated, aerated drinks simply elevate the symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, liver damage, heart ailments and even cancer to some extent.
Eat at proper intervals. If one wants to maintain his/her lost weight or intends to lose weight, then the most important point to keep in mind is to have food at proper regular intervals. Skipping any meal of the day, will not help one to lose weight, rather it creates problems. It is recommended to have 6 to 7 meals in a day but of small portions. The count is of calories, i.e. how much you consume in a day. The small portion of meal helps you digest food faster. And not to forget, eat a light dinner at least a couple of hours before sleeping to avoid acidity and other indigestion issues that indirectly affect weight management.
Do not forget your strength training routine. Not only does strength training give men and women a fit and toned body, but it also helps the joints and muscles work more efficiently against injuries. It makes joints and bones more flexible and strong, and increases stamina. It is ideally suggested that one should opt for strength training for at least three times a week. Strength train all parts of your body by targeting different body muscles on a daily basis.

Shashi Tharoor asks IITs to double research work
CHENNAI: The IITs need to pull up their socks and spend more on research, Union human resource development minister Shashi Tharoor has said.
Speaking at the Sri Sai Ram College of Engineering convocation in the city on Wednesday, Tharoor said that he has asked the IITs and IISC to double their research work.
"We have several universities with good teaching facilities, but inadequate or no research facilities," he said. "Although the IITs are top ranking institutes in the country which carry out much research, it is still not enough considering their ranking."
Tharoor added that under ideal conditions, at least 30% of a university's funding should be earmarked for research.
"Today we have a mismatch between the education given by colleges and the skills sets sought by companies," he said.
"That is why companies often put a new recruit under a year's training, despite his specialized education. An expansion beyond teaching might just help."
Agreeing to this, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director for IIT Madras said their research contribution depended on the number of students who opt for a PhD on the campus.
"We now draw in 200 students for PhD every year," he said. "We are trying to increase it to 350 per year by introducing a sandwich course comprising both masters and PhD."
But the outlook is not altogether grim, said Ramamurthi. "Today, India's ranking for publishing research papers has improved from 15th worldwide to ninth. The number of PhD students in IITs is four times higher than it was 10 years ago. All we need is for the new IITs to reach similar targets."
Coming out in support of Delhi University's decision to introduce a four-year undergraduate programme, Tharoor said, "It would be wrong for politicians to oppose the decisions of a university, when all they are doing is what they are meant to do; bringing in academic reforms."
He said that while it is always difficult to bring in reforms, this one had the potential to deliver, and as such should be encouraged.

Tainted Ankeet Chavan's 'shadow' haunts MCA event

MUMBAI: It was a gaffe that aptly reflected the tragedy that is Indian cricket at this point.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA)'s function to honour Mumbai teams across all age categories from the U-14 level to the side that won the 40th Ranji title was going on smoothly, with all the top cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar in attendance, till the emcee of the show, BCCI's media manager Devendra Prabhudesai, committed an error.
While reading out the names of the players who were a part of the Ranji-winning side, which was supposed to receive a special cash prize to the tune of Rs 2 crore from the MCA (over and above BCCI's prize money of Rs 2 crore), Prabhudesai read out tainted spinner Ankeet Chavan's name, too.
While Chavan had played his part in the triumph with 33 wickets, his alleged involvement in spot fixing during the IPL has meant the left-arm spinner is behind bars currently, and has been suspended by the BCCI.
It automatically means Ankeet is not eligible for any awards in a BCCI-organised tournament. None came forward to receive the award at the function, in which the chief guest was former BCCI and ICC chief and NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
Prabhudesai later clarified that it was a case of "human error." "We had prepared for this event before the India-Australia series. Then, the IPL kept us busy. Plus once you are on stage, a thing like this can happen," he told TOI.
The MCA officials clarified that there was no question of Chavan receiving any prize money, and it was just a 'mistake.' Clearly, the officials had forgotten to strike off the tainted bowler's name from the list.
Beyond this glitch, there was everything fantastic about the event, in which the MCA honoured the top individual performers across all age groups from the 2007-08 season onwards.
Tendulkar received the award for the fastest century this season in Ranji Trophy (vs Railways at the Wankhede).
The maestro, however, would have been more delighted to see his son Arjun sprint to the podium to collect his individual award for being part of the Mumbai U-14 team which won the West Zone title this season.
The gathering saw the presence of several former Test and first-class cricketers, including Madhav Mantri, the country's oldest-living cricketer.
Ajinkya Rahane, who missed on an India berth for the Champions Trophy, had the consolation of winning an award for the fastest Ranji hundred for the 2010-11 season. Rohit Sharma, currently with the Indian team in England, won a similar prize for the 2011-12 season.
There were special awards for five former cricketers — Dilip Vengsarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Sandeep Patil, Abey Kuruvilla and woman cricketer Vrindha Bhagat.

Movie Name : Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Release Date : May 31, 2013
Genre : Rom Com
Producer : Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta Director : Ayan Mukerji
Music Director : Pritam Cast : Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin.
Synopsis:
When Dharma Productions announced YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI no one expected it to be hyped the way it is at this stage. Despite boasting of the successful reunion of Ranbir Kapoor and young talented, director Ayan Mukerji, after WAKE UP SID, the film was more in the news for its lead stars, real life ex-couple, Ranbir-Deepika, back together on the big screen.
However it was Pritam's music, especially Badtameez Dil, (and Ranbir's dancing!) that just took the nation by storm and hyped the movie to great heights. So let's check out the audio which is being touted as the first real blockbuster album of the year.
It's all out fun, frolic, celebration and innocent naughtiness that one encounters in the chartbusting party trumpet loaded number, 'Badtameeez Dil', that is so very addictive that even when one fails to grab the mad gibberish but highly endearing lyrics at one go, still one gets instantly hooked to it. Benny Dayal is outstanding and it's his show all the way, although Shefali Alvares does join him briefly and does a good job. The song is already a chartbuster and is appealing to one and all, eight to eighty!

" INSPIRING STORY "
Keep your dream
I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse.
It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses.
As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch.
He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.
Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. “He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’
“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’
“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’
Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard.
He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this.
However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’
“Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”
Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch.
I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.”
He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.”
When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer.
During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”
“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”
