SC to examine CBI affidavit today, Law Minister's fate hangs in the balance

New Delhi: Amidst reports that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are divided over the decision on the fate of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar, the Supreme Court will on Wednesday examine the affidavit submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with coal scam.
In a major embarrassment for the government, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha in an affidavit told the Supreme Court on Monday that the Law Minister and senior officials of the PMO and Coal Ministry had made changes in the central agency's draft status report on coal scam.
Ashwani, who is under attack from the Opposition which is demanding his resignation over the issue, could find himself on a more sticky wicket if adverse remarks are made against him by the apex court on Wednesday.
Attorney General GE Vahanvati may also find it difficult to justify his earlier claim made in the SC that he was not aware about the contents of the status report, a statement belied by the CBI Director's nine-page affidavit saying that the AG had glanced through the report and changes were made in it on his suggestion.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice RM Lodha, which had pulled up the CBI for keeping it in the dark about the sharing of status report with government, will go through a second affidavit filed by Sinha giving details of the changes made and at whose instance these were done.
Sinha in his affidavit said that the minister made "certain changes" in the agency's draft probe report on coal scam and gave details of series of meetings with Kumar, Vahanvati, Additional Solicitor General Haren Raval and Shatrughna Singh and AK Bhalla, joint secretaries of the PMO and the Coal Ministry during which changes in the probe reports were suggested and made by them.
The CBI version contradicts reports of Ashwani's account that he was not involved in drafting the changes.
Meanwhile, differences have reportedly cropped up between Manmohan Singh and Sonia with the latter wanting the Prime Minister to address media on all issues plaguing the government, sources say. But Manmohan Singh is not keen to talk to the media on any of the corruption allegations including 2G spectrum scam, Railway Board bribery and Railway Protection Force officers transfer and posting scandal and the coal scam.
Sources said the Prime Minister and the Congress party are not on the same page when it comes to allegations against Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Ashwani Kumar. Both the ministers are considered close to Manmohan Singh.

CEAT posts 33% increase in consolidated profit for March quarter

MUMBAI: Ceat Limited, the flagship company of the RPG Group posted 32.82% increase in its consolidated net profit for the March ending fourth quarter led by softening rubber prices and growing volumes on the two wheeler front.
The company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 64.90 crore for the quarter of FY-13 as against Rs 48.86 crore it posted for the same period last year. EBITDA for the quarter stood improved 30 basis points to 10.7%. (1% = 100 basis points). The consolidated net sales of the company jumped 6% for the fourth quarter to 1333.42 crore.
For the full fiscal year FY-13, the consolidated net profit increase almost six fold to 120.19 crore and net sales for FY-13 jumped 8.56% to Rs 5,009 crore and EBIDTA margins saw a jump of 320 basis points
"The company's profitability margin has been improved significantly by 3% year on year basis over the last few months, due decrease in rubber prices in international market and the operation of the new radial tyre plant at Halol in Gujarat," said Anant Goenka, MD, CEAT Limited.
"The margins in the year ahead will continue to remain on the good side even though over all growth will be relatively slower and the raw materials cost will also stable in next 2 to 3 months," he further added.
Goenka says, despite the tough external environment, with stable raw material prices, Ceat expects to replicate this good performance in the forthcoming quarters too
In fact with the global rubber prices hovering around Rs 135 per kg as against Rs 160-165 per kg in India, Goenka says, Ceat will be importing rubber from outside in a larger quantity to take advantage of the current pricing situation.
In the fiscal year 2013, the company has managed to reduce the debt by Rs 273 crore to Rs 1,038 crore in FY-13. And the debt equity ratio has come down from 1.9:1 to 1.3:1.
"We hope to bring down the debt equity ratio below 1 in FY-14 with focus on tight working capital management and improving operational efficiency," said the Manish Dugar, CFO, Ceat Ltd. Ceat Ltd will be investing Rs 60 crore to meet its capital expenditure requirement for FY-14, with Rs 10 crore going into its plant in Bangladesh, which is expected to go on stream in the next fiscal year.
The company plans to launch 100 new products in the FY-14 and aims to build on its market share in the two wheeler tyre space, where it gained over 5% market share in FY-13 to 19%. Goenka says, while the demand in the replacement market remains muted, it has managed to increase its OE sales by adding Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto and Volvo Eicher in FY-13.
Of its overall revenues, Ceat Limited garners about 20-23% sales from supplying directly to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), 55% from the replacement market and the balance 25% from exports. Goenka says he hopes to completely utilise the Halol plant capacity in FY-14. And it will continue to rely on outsourcing model to meet increased demand in FY-14.

Raspberry supplement may help you lose weight

Raspberry ketones can help you lose weight and boost levels of a metabolism-regulating hormone, a report has claimed.
Raspberry ketones are fragrant compounds that occur naturally in raspberries and other fruits. The compounds can boost levels of adiponectin hormone, which regulates metabolism. Higher levels of this hormone are associated with fewer fat stores, the Daily Mail reported.
The ketones are normally used to give a fruity smell to cosmetics and foodstuffs but, because you only get between one and four milligram from every kilo of fresh fruit, a synthetic version is often used to get the same result.
And now these ketones are being sold online, in supplement form, as a slimming aid, the report said.
Millions of Americans have become convinced of powers of raspberry ketones to ‘melt’ away fat after they were recommended by Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
He said raspberry ketones are ‘the number-one miracle in a bottle to burn your fat’.
However, Ann Ashworth, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, urges caution, pointing out that the only published research into the effects of raspberry ketones on weight loss is small studies on mice.
“Although this sounds very exciting, this evidence cannot be transferred to humans without further clinical trials,” she said.

Delhi University Academic Council passes new four-yr courses of 28 depts
NEW DELHI: With admissions for new four-year undergraduate programmes set to begin from next month, Delhi University's Academic Council on Tuesday passed courses of 28 departments for the new course structure to be introduced from this academic session.
"The Academic Council approved courses in Discipline 1, Discipline 2 as well as Application courses of 28 departments in a marathon meeting of 92 Council members," registrar Alka Sharma said.
The syllabus for the courses were passed with 86 votes in favour and six against them, she added.
The Academic Council met to assess the course syllabus recommended by Standing Committee for subjects to be offered as major, minor and applied courses, besides the 11 foundational courses which will be compulsory for all students.
The meeting was adjourned for tomorrow to pass the remaining courses and to discuss several issues regarding the four-year undergraduate programme.
Giving details about the approved courses, Academic Council member and director of South Campus Umesh Rai said most of the courses of Faculty of Sciences and Arts were passed.
"All the courses which come under Faculty of Interdisciplinary and Applied Sciences like electronics, instrumentation, microbiology, biochemistry were passed."
"Besides most of the courses related to Faculty of Arts including English, Hindi, Hindi Journalism, Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Psychology also were passed," he said.
Although Sharma did not give a clear picture on the number of papers and courses passed by the Academic Council, Council member Amitav Chakrobarty claimed 1,013 papers and 89 courses had been passed.
"1,013 papers of 28 departments were passed. Minor changes were made in the meeting that were recommended by the Standing Committee," he said
Some of the Academic Council members raised objections regarding the development of the four-year programme's structure and gave a note of dissent on it.
"Lot of discussion happened. I have also given a note of dissent. If this course will get implemented, the workload of teachers will be reduced for the first two years. So due to this, some of the ad hoc teachers might be asked to leave," said S K Sagar, member of Academic Council.

Mumbai rule at home again, thump KKR by 65 runs

MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians continued their domination at fortress Wankhede, thumping defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs on Tuesday.
The defeat virtually ended Kolkata's hopes of making the playoffs this year, while the big win ensured that Mumbai moved up to second place.
Scorecard| Match in Pics | Watch IPL Videos
Chasing a stiff 171 for victory, Gautam Gambhir's men could manage only 105 in 18.2 overs on a track with generous grass, but one that also aided spin.
Left-arm-seamer Mitchell Johnson struck early again, getting the wicket of KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir, bowled for a duck. It was the 11th time the Aussie has dismissed him in all competitions.
Yusuf Pathan struck a six and a four but was castled by Ojha for 13. Jacques Kallis struggled to force the pace again, falling to Harbhajan for a 26-ball 24. The offie mixed up his length and pace nicely to end with three wickets for 27.
Any hopes of a miracle rested on the enterprising Eoin Morgan. But the Irishman sliced Abu Nechim to Rohit Sharma at point to settle the contest.
Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar (48 off 28; 8x4) hit the rewind button in a vintage exhibition of strokeplay. MI's innings was marred by malfunctioning floodlights.
Under fire for being too slow in the powerplays, Tendulkar hit former teammate Ryan McLaren, (replacing Senanayake), for five successive boundaries in his second over, the fourth of the innings.
His vintage strokeplay illuminated the night briefly before darkness descended at the Wankhede after two banks of floodlights malfunctioned, causing the players to leave the ground for 18 minutes when the hosts were 63 for no loss after nine overs.
That 18-minute break in play though affected Smith's rhythm as he struggled to get KKR left-arm-spinner Iqbal Abdulla away.
Abdulla impressed in his spell of 4-0-30-1 and bowled wide outside offstump with a packed off-side field. The tactic irritated the West Indian even as Tendulkar stroked his way to 48 (28 balls, 8x4) before being castled by Rajat Bhatia.
Tendulkar added 93 for the first wicket with Smith in 13 overs before Smith too departed to Abdulla for 47 (53b, 7x4). The platform was set for Mumbai's power hitters to do the damage in the death.
But KKR launched a stunning comeback. The 18th over of the innings bowled by McLaren saw three of their power-hitters dismissed within the space of six deliveries.
Skipper Rohit Sharma (16), in scintillating form right through the tournament was undone by the presence of mind of Eoin Morgan.
The Irishman caught him, then overbalanced, but lobbed the ball to put it back in the field of play before catching him on the mid-wicket fence.
Pollard miscued a short one to short fine leg for 4 and Rayudu was run out without facing a ball.

" INSPIRING STORY "
The Smell of Rain
A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the Doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. Still groggy from surgery, her husband David held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon of March 10,1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24 weeks pregnant, to Danae Lu Blessing.
At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound and nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor’s soft words dropped like bombs. I don’t think she’s going to make it, he said, as kindly as he could. “There’s only a 10 percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one.”
Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Danae would likely face if she survived. She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probably be blind, and she would certainly be prone to other catastrophic conditions from cerebral palsy to complete mental retardation, and on and on.
“No! No!” was all Diana could say. She and David, with their 5-year-old son Dustin, had long dreamed of the day they would have a daughter to become a family of four. Now, within a matter of hours, that dream was slipping away.
Through the dark hours of morning as Danae held onto life by the thinnest thread, Diana slipped in and out of sleep, growing more and more determined that their tiny daughter would live, and live to be a healthy, happy young girl. But David, fully awake and listening to additional dire details of their daughter’s chances of ever leaving the hospital alive, much less healthy, knew he must confront his wife with the inevitable.
David walked in and said that we needed to talk about making funeral arrangements. Diana remembers, ‘I felt so bad for him because he was doing everything, trying to include me in what was going on, but I just wouldn’t listen, I couldn’t listen.
As if willed to live by Diana’s determination, Danae clung to life hour after hour, with the help of every medical machine and marvel her miniature body could endure. But as those first days passed, a new agony set in for David and Diana.
Because Danae’s under-developed nervous system was essentially raw, the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so they couldn’t even cradle their tiny baby girl against their chests to offer the strength of their love. All they could do, as Danae struggled alone beneath the ultraviolet light in the tangle of tubes and wires, was to pray that God would stay close to their precious little girl. There was never a moment when Danae suddenly grew stronger.
But as the weeks went by, she did slowly gain an ounce of weight here and an ounce of strength there. At last, when Danae turned two months old, her parents were able to hold her in their arms for the very first time. And two months later-though doctors continued to gently but grimly warn that her chances of surviving, much less living any kind of normal life, were next to zero. Danae went home from the hospital, just as her mother had predicted.
Today, five years later, Danae is a petite but feisty young girl with glittering gray eyes and an unquenchable zest for life. She shows no signs, what so ever, of any mental or physical impairment. Simply, she is everything a little girl can be and more-but that happy ending is far from the end of her story.
