On World Press Freedom Day, UN officials issue call to protect journalists' safety

United Nations officials have issued a call to action to ensure the safety of journalists in every country, echoing Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who declared; 'When it is safe to speak, the whole world benefits'. This year's theme, 'Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media', seeks to rally global action to protect the safety of all journalists worldwide and to break the vicious circle of impunity for crimes committed against them. Chinese incursions: Salman Khurshid may cancel Beijing visit

On Board Special Aircraft: The planned visit by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid to Beijing next week is under a cloud as he said on Friday that the progress in dialogue to end stand-off in Ladakh is not satisfactory and India would have liked "much better response" from China.

Khurshid, who is slated to travel to Beijing on May 9, said the review of his visit has not been done "as of now" but "what will happen tomorrow, one can't predict today".

He emphasised that India wanted reversal of "adverse incident" in Ladakh and return to the status quo in Depsang Valley where the Chinese troops intruded. "We haven't reviewed at this stage.

We have not found it necessary. We have not.. reached at that sage to review," Khurshid said when asked whether his scheduled visit to Beijing is under review.

Questioned whether there was certainty about his going ahead with the visit, he responded, "The word certainty is not a good word to use in human affairs. What will happen tomorrow one can't predict today".

He remained evasive on giving clarity on the visit despite repeated queries but sources said the visit would "not be worthwhile" if there is no progress in talks taking place at various levels.

Earlier in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the visit of Khurshid to Beijing on May 9 and said both nations are committed to resolving the dispute over the presence of PLA troops in Depsang valley in Ladakh through talks without letting it to "affect" bilateral ties.

Khurshid, who China said would be on a two day visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, would meet Chinese leaders besides holding talks with Wang.

Murugappa group’s capex for 2013-14 lowest in 6 years

CHENNAI: Stung by economic slowdown, the Murugappa Group, which has diverse interests from fertilizers to engineering, has said that it would spend only Rs 450 crore as capital expenditure for the fiscal 2013-14.

"This is the lowest in 6 years," A Vellayan, chairman of the group said. The group which has 28 businesses spent nearly Rs 1,750 crore (in 2012-13) towards capital expenditure and acquisitions. "This year (2013-14) will be a year of consolidation in a difficult phase.

The confusion (politically and therefore economically) has started to tell on businesses. We are very cautious on new investments," he said.

Revenues across group companies grew a meager 1% at Rs 22,466 crore during the fiscal ended March 2013, while EBIDTA fell 7% to Rs 2,507 crore.

It is the stated intent of the Murugappa group to grow three times faster than India's GDP. The fertilizer business under Coromandel witnessed an 8% drop in revenues, while the sugar business in EID Parry witnessed a 9% fall.

Tube Investments recorded a meager 2% rise in revenues while engineering firm Carborundum Universal witnessed a 1% fall. However, financial services grew 44% while insurance witnessed a 20% growth. "Overall it was difficult year," he said.

Vellayan added that the things were beginning to improve. "The prediction of a normal monsoon, coupled with partial sugar decontrol will help us this year.

We anticipate a revenue growth of more than 20% this year whereas the GDP growth is pegged at 6%. All our acquisitions and investments of last year will come into play this fiscal," Vellayan said.

The agri businesses spear headed by fertilizer and sugar will show strong positive growth while financial services could record a 35% rise in revenues. Engineering services would continue to be under stress due to industrial, (more particularly automotive slowdown) and export markets for the group's products turning tepid, he said.

During the year, group company Tube Investments acquired Shanti Gears for nearly Rs 464 crore, while Coromandel acquired 49% stake in Liberty Phosphare for Rs 169 crore.

Coromandel also acquired Liberty Urvarak for Rs 78 crore while Carborundum acquired Thukela Refractories. A group firm also acquired 8.13% stake in Andhra Pradesh Gas Power Corporation for Rs 75 crore.

How to improve balance in older people

Falling down and losing balance is one of the most common problems with old age. As age progresses, parents will complain of loss of balance and dizziness.

Falls can lead to complications that in turn can lead to disability. Hence with the help of our fitness experts we build a good foundation based on exercise that build and strengthen your muscles. Here are some interesting exercises that will help you re-gain your footing.

Strength and conditioning coach, Arnav Sarkar gives you a practical guide to boost your muscle groups. He explains, "With loss of activity the body starts losing strength, endurance and flexibility, and thus basic movements like walking become a challenge for some. The best way to combat this is to keep exercising and focus on working all the major muscle groups."

He lists basic exercises to follow, "A basic exercise that should be a staple would include squats, do half range or sit on a chair if normal full range is not possible. Besides do some lying hip extensions, light to moderate weight training, and of course do some stretching, cardiovascular activity like walking, climbing stairs to keep your body strong and not let things like balance become an issue for you."

Jordyn Steig, our fitness guru, expert columnist and founder of Wellistic Wholeness, breaks down the facts further he says, "Fit people in general fall less often than those whose muscles are weak and joints are less mobile. Almost any exercise will enhance older people's agility and keep their muscles and bones stronger than they would be if they remain sedentary."

Jordyn says, "The best way to remain light on ones feet and learn how to naturally react to being thrown off of our centers, which causes falling, is to engage in exercise which destabilises the body. Destabilising the body simply means ensuring that whatever exercise one is doing, the body needs to stabilise itself rather than letting the floor or a fixed object like a bench or a stool hold our bodies still."

He lets you in on his personal preference, "I tend to use an exercise ball to lie or sit on or a wobble board to stand on or hold straps (like the TRX Suspension Training System) to allow clients to pick one foot off the ground or stand on their tip-toes for every possible exercise during a workout.

The basic effect is to require our core muscles to stabilise our body. When these methods are practiced regularly, I see a very quick change in a person's coordination and agility, as well as an increase in mobility in their joints. This decreases the chances of falling when one is slightly knocked off their centre and also makes a person, supple, fit, and strong."

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22
This will be an ideal week to travel far and wide, for a group of planets are gathering in your house of adventurous foreign travel. In addition to Mars, Mercury, and Venus, you also have a solar eclipse in this same area. Nothing similar has come by since May 1994, so this is a new and very exciting influence. If you can take a vacation, do, but even a business trip would turn out to be highly successful, and help you expand your influence as well as your own understanding of a topic important to you.

Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
A solar eclipse in Taurus will arrive in your eighth house of other people's money on Thursday, May 9. With the Sun, new moon, Venus (your ruler), Mars and Mercury in the same house, you will be fairly obsessed with money, and concentrating on all the details you will need to oversee. You may be dealing with matters of division of property in a divorce, managing an estate or inheritance, deal with an insurance company about a payout, or seeking venture capital or a loan for your business, as some examples. Saturn will oppose all the planets in Taurus, so make sure your paperwork is perfect, or it will bounce back to you, much to your dismay.

Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Scorpio
Saturn, the planet of maturity, is in Scorpio for a long trend, and is urging you to think about how to stabilize your life, especially in terms of one important romantic relationship. You may be planning to marry soon, or if you are already married, to find better ways to communicate with your spouse. A solar eclipse (a new moon) will appear this week on Thursday, May 9, and will open the door for talks. The Sun, Venus, Mars, and Mercury, all in your opposite sign, Taurus, will help too. Solar eclipses tend to bring optimistic news for they mark fresh starts.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
Lots of new assignments will come to you this week, something you will see just after the important new moon solar eclipse appears on Thursday, May 9. You will be motivated and energized, and if you need help to get the work out and shipped on time, it appears VIPs may be open to the idea of approving a budget you can use for hiring more staff. Pluto will be ideal position to the Sun, new moon, Mercury, and Mars, suggesting that the money you make on this project will be generous.

Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
capricon.jpgThis may become one of the most dazzling weeks of the year for your romantic life. If you are single, a gaggle of friendly little planets has arrived in your fifth house of new love, including Venus, Mercury, Mars, and the Sun and new moon solar eclipse, all in perfectly compatible Taurus, in ideal angle to your Capricorn Sun sign. If you are single and hoping to find someone to love, this solar eclipse may open a new chapter. Solar eclipses are not endings in the way lunar eclipses can be, so you are about to see a very joyous trend begin.

Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
aquarius.jpg Your physical home or family member (possibly regarding a parent) will be the center of your thinking this week, due to a solar eclipse in Taurus, due Thursday, May 9. This eclipse will mark a beginning, so it is sure to bring options to solve any home or family question that may arise. Overall, a new day is dawning in your private life, and this solar eclipse, along with a group of heavenly bodies including the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Mars, will push your home-related plans and timetable forward with great speed.

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
After this week's eclipse appears, Thursday, May 9, you may pack your suitcase, quite unexpectedly, to get to a location not too far from home. Your travel seems to be personal, not business-related, and most likely done to see a friend, indicted by Pluto's position in your eleventh house of platonic relationships. If you can get away this week, do, as it appears you'll spin a memory weaved in gold.

Mumbai University goofs again, gives right paper when confronted

MUMBAI: Mumbai University's litany of goof-ups gets longer. Several distance education students and repeaters of MA Marathi-Part II who had signed up for exams under the old syllabus were reportedly given a question paper on Friday based on the new curriculum. When contacted, the varsity told the exam supervisor that question papers according to the old syllabus had not been printed.

Unwilling to put up with the "error", three women students confronted varsity officials and, after a long wait, were given papers on the old syllabus and told to take the test at the exam house.

Women students make university provide them 'right exam paper'

This is not just a story reflecting the sorry state of affairs at the University of Mumbai and its inability to staunch an endless flow of errors. This is also a tale of grit exhibited by three women students who decided not to accept what the university threw at them: a wrong question paper.

While the varsity administration turns a blind eye to the series of examination season slip-ups , the blunders are clearly infuriating students. This was mirrored on Friday in the attitude of three girls who refused to accept an erroneous question paper and instead marched to the university and demanded the correct version.

Students of MA Marathi-Part II appeared for the Dalit sahitya (Dalit literature) exam at 11am on Friday. Among them were some distance education students and repeaters who had signed up to take the examination under the old syllabus, which was revised two years ago. The question paper the students received was , however, based entirely on the new curriculum. Some students said they noticed the university error on receipt of the paper and lodged a complaint with the supervisor who contacted the university. In reply, the supervisor was told that "question papers according to the old syllabus were not printed" . "The supervisor asked us to attempt the new syllabus paper. But we had not prepared for it," said an examinee.

IPL 2013: Mumbai face a tough challenge to stop the Chennai juggernaut

Mumbai: They have been unconquered at home so far but Mumbai Indians face an arduous task to extend the record as they face a rampaging Chennai Super Kings in their IPL match, here on Sunday.

Chennai are coming into the match with seven win on the trot and they are the only team to have won all their four away games this season, so Mumbai have a task cut out even as they had beaten the same rivals when they first time.

Both the teams appear to be even on paper with their star-studded line-ups that bat quite deep but on the points table Chennai (18) stand atop following nine wins from 11 games while Mumbai (12) are fourth with six wins.

Mumbai`s three-match winning streak has been snapped with the seven-wicket defeat against Hyderabad in their previous game but their batting appears to be settled and has delivered in the four home games.

They have rattled up huge scores of 209 for 5 against the Delhi Daredevils, 194 for 7 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, 183 for 3 against Pune Warriors, and 174 for three against Kings XI Punjab in home games.

Opener Dwayne Smith has been in good touch, aggregating 194 runs in six matches, with two half-centuries in his kitty. Batting great Sachin Tendulkar has scored just one fifty this year while amassing 171 runs in 10 games and the local hero would be keen to score big against formidable Chennai.

The middle-order has been the strength for the hosts, with wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, skipper Sharma and West Indian all rounder Kieron Pollard being the leading run scorers for them.

The Mumbai captain has registered four half-centuries, scoring 375 runs in 10 matches at an average of 53.57, while the Trinidadian Pollard has struggled in the last two games.

The bowling attack, which boasts of Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson, also poses a threat to the opposition, with the duo providing the early breakthroughs.

They have been complemented well by the Indian spin twins Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha. Sri Lankan Malinga has been able to pick up only six wickets in his eight games while Australian Johnson and off-spinner Singh are the leading wicket-takers for the side, with 12 each.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have been in destructive form, having remained unbeaten in their last seven games and most recently defeating Kings XI Punjab by 15 runs.

Except the two loses at home against Mumbai and Pune, the two-time IPL champions haven`t put a foot wrong and are almost through to the play offs.

Aussie opener Michael Hussey has been in rich vein of form and has amassed 485 runs in his 10 games at an impressive average of 60.62. He is the second leading run scorer in the tournament after Chris Gayle (505).

Suresh Raina cracked his first IPL century against Kings XI Punjab in the last game, after getting off to good starts. He scored an unbeaten 100 and the Uttar Pradesh batsman would be high on confidence. He has scored 359 runs in the 11 games at an average of 44.87.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja have relished the job of finishers and have guided the team to victory in most of their games.

The `captain cool` has been in ominous form with the bat, and has scored 300 runs in the 11 matches, while anchoring the middle order.

West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 19 scalps to his credit but the Trinidadian has struggled with the bat in the tournament with just 51 runs in 11 games.

Haryana medium pacer Mohit Sharma has done reasonably well, picking up 11 wickets in eight matches at an average of 14.81.

The problem of death bowling has haunted Chennai for long and Dhoni has repeatedly said that the team needs to improve its bowling in the slog overs.

In the previous game against Punjab, they conceded 49 runs in the last five overs, despite Bravo giving away only three runs in the final over.

The Teams (from):

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (C), Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Abu Nechim, Akshar Patel, Aditya Tare, Aiden Blizzard, Ambati Rayudu, Amitoze Singh, Dhawal Kulkarni, Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Harbhajan Singh, Jacob Oram, Jasprit Bumrah, Javed Khan, Jalaj Saxena, James Franklin, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Munaf Patel, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Phil Hughes, Pawan Suyal, Pragyan Ojha, Rishi Dhawan, Suryakumar Yadav, Sushant Marathe and Yuzvendra Chahal.

INSPIRING STORY "

  A story for Passover

A good Passover story should always involve cakes. Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka is the subject of this year’s story. He was in the news because of his most recent catalogue of cake designs; Klaschka is a pastry specialist.

Of course, Austrian pastries are famous the world over. Now, pastry baker Manfred Klaschka’s most recent catalogue of such tasty delights was in the news this week because it included cakes decorated with swastikas – as well as one with a baby raising its right arm in a Nazi salute.

Herr Klaschka insists he is not a Nazi. After the news story broke, he even met with a Holocaust awareness group, and apologized for what he had done, and he then baked a cake to say he was sorry – a cake with Jewish and Christian symbols. The point of the story – the bit I found interesting – is Herr Klaschka’s explanation for what he did.

"I see it was a mistake, anyone who knows me knows what kind of person I am. I am no Nazi", said Klaschka, who had earlier said he was just a pastry maker fulfilling his customers’ wishes. Fulfilling his customers’ wishes?

There is a market in Austria in 2011 for cakes with babies raising their arms in Nazi salutes, cakes with swastikas on them? There are parties where people serve such cakes? Maybe birthday parties for babies?

f course there are such people, and there are such parties, and because of that, there is a market – there is consumer demand – for swastika cakes. Which is why Herr Klaschka was happy to bake them. And not only in Austria.

You may remember the case of the Campbell family from New Jersey.

When Kurt Waldheim was exposed as a war criminal his popularity rose. The neo-Nazi Freedom Party headed by the late Jorg Haider, won 27% of the vote in the 2000 elections and became part of the coalition government – the first time since 1945 that Nazis had sat in a European government.

But this never happened in New Jersey – which is why I want to talk about the Campbell family. The Campbell family in New Jersey made the news back in 2008 when they tried to get a birthday cake made for their son — they have a son and two daughters — at the local Shop Rite in Holland Township.

The store refused their request. And the reason was that Mr. Campbell wanted the cake to read "Happy birthday Adolf Hitler". Because, you see, his son’s name was Adolf Hitler Campell. One of the daughters is named is named JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell. Well, you get the point.
When I read about the Austrian baker Manfred Klaschka, I thought – here was a marketing opportunity for him.

He would have happily baked a cake for the Campbell family. So what does all this have to do with Passover?

This week, when we are forbidden to eat Sachertore or Linzer tort or even the delightfully named Punschkrapfen, we might want to pause and think about something we say every year at the Passover seder: 'In every generation it is the duty of man to consider himself as if he had come forth from Egypt'.

Because in this generation, as in all others, there are those who order custom-made swastika cakes. There are those who name their children after Adolf Hitler. And there are others who fire anti-tank missiles at school busses with Jewish children in them.

Because there are those who are building nuclear weapons, having told the world that their intention is to wipe the Jewish state off the face of the earth. Because people like that make Pharaoh look like a nice guy.

Because getting out of the house of bondage, out of slavery in Egypt, was not the end of the story for the Jewish people, but was the beginning. It is a story of a never-ending struggle for freedom, for dignity, for respect, for human rights, that has universal resonance and meaning — for all people, everywhere, always.
