France: Rooftop beehives create buzz above French parliament

The roof of France's National Assembly is ready to buzz with activity after the arrival of three large bee hives this week as part of a project to promote pesticide-free honey. The farm ministry is working to revive beekeeping and reduce a dependence on imported honey. The bees are expected to be moved in once the weather warms up, should produce up to 150 kg of honey a year, and help pollinate flowering plants around the capital. The project is part of a new trend across Europe to put bee colonies on city rooftops, taking advantage of the fact that bees adapt well to urban living and can target the many varieties of long-blooming inner-city greenery.

Analysis: Steady job gains seen bolstering US economy

American employers likely hired at a moderate pace in March, a sign the economy was gathering momentum even as Washington stepped up an austerity drive by enacting painful spending cuts. The economy probably added 200,000 jobs last month, with the jobless rate steady at 7.7 per cent, according to a Reuters survey of economists. That would mark the fourth time in five months that nonfarm payrolls increased by least 200,000, a robust trend considering the drag on the economy from a January tax increase and federal budget cuts that began in March.

Australia: Lack of inmates shuts youth detention centre

The New South Wales Government has been forced to close a youth detention centre because of a lack of inmates. According to the Department of Juvenile Justice, changes to policing and court practices has cut the number of young inmates going behind bars by nearly 50 per cent in the past four years. Attorney-General Greg Smith said, 'We think that detention is a last resort -- it is a university of crime. I want to keep young people out and I think that has had an impact on the courts to an extent.'

Canada: Decrease in young offenders closes units

The number of incarcerated teens in Saskatchewan has fallen so much that units have been closed at three youth detention centres and one will be repurposed to house adult women on remand in Regina. Since 2000-2001, the number of youth in custody has dropped 45 per cent, to an average daily count of 185 in 2012 compared to 342 in 2000, figures from Saskatchewan Corrections and Policing show.

Arvind Kejriwal to end fast against inflated power bills

NeNew Delhi: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal will break his indefinite fast against 'inflated' power and water bills on Saturday on the 15th day of his protest after launching the second phase of 'Civil Disobedience Movement'.

Announcing his plans on Friday, Kejriwal invoked Anna Hazare in his speech and expressed his wish to break the fast after receiving a glass of juice from the 74-year-old activist with whom he had split in September 2012 on the question of the anti-corruption movement taking a political plunge.

Anna, however, would not be able to come to Delhi on Saturday as he was on his nation-wide tour, Kejriwal said.

Two AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Kumar Vishwas had met Anna on Friday who is in Haryana and invited him to come to Delhi to break Kejriwal's fast. Anna expressed his inability to come to Delhi, but wrote a letter appealing Kejriwal to end his fast.

As part of the launch of the second phase, the Aam Aadmi Party activists will visit every ward and reconnect power and water connections disconnected by authorities for non-payment of bills, Kejriwal told his supporters after breaking the fast which started on March 23.

"After that, tomorrow evening the activists will assemble here and I will break my fast. I will be only breaking my fast but the movement, the protest will go on," Kejriwal said.

"I wanted to break my fast by accepting a glass of juice from Anna Hazare but he cannot be here tomorrow because of his tour.

Though he would not be present here, I have his blessings," he said. Anna had visited Kejriwal at the protest site in north-east Delhi's Sunder Nagri on March 29 and had urged him to end his fast.

Later, Kejriwal also got the support of activists Aruna Roy and Medha Patkar, who had differences with him over his stand on the Lokpal Bill and anti-corruption movement entering politics, emphasising the need for a CAG audit of private discoms in Delhi.

He said over 10 lakh people have signed the petition saying that they will not pay the power bill. "Does that mean they will stop paying power bills? No.
But this is just the beginning. Everyone in Delhi upset with inflated power bills," the AAP leader said. ll.

How often should you eat?

In our race to be the biggest loser, most of us go after different diets. The trusted and age-old three-meals-a-day concept works for some, while others swear by the new-age eight-meals-a-day. Most of us have been brought up on the notion that having untimely in-between meal snacks, is one of the major causes of weight gain.

Of late, however, a number of trainers, nutritionists and dieticians have come up with the 'six-to-eight-meals-a-day' plan. And many Bollywood actors and actresses claim that following such diets have made them the biggest losers. They believe that in-between snacks help them stay slim and this regular intake also boosts metabolism. However, there are health gurus and trainers who believe that eating too many meals may just work against you and increase your weight. Read on to find out what the experts have to say...

Eat six to eight meals a day
Eat to burn! This can be one of the easiest and most reliable ways to ensure fat loss. Digestion itself is a calorie-burning activity. For every calorie you ingest, your body uses some to burn what you are eating. The question is, how do you make this wonderful feature of your body work for you?

This is the essential principle behind the practice of frequent eating where eating at shorter intervals (six to eight meals a day or more!) enables your body to use more calories to aid digestion. When you constantly provide fuel to your body, it means you are also tickling your body to work. Keep working, keep burning. This is called the thermogenic effect of food and it is not only an incredibly smart way of losing weight, it also helps you increase your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

I like to call this the Internal Workout — because by continually making it work for digestion, you're giving your body a workout. And while you may not be able to see the furious digestive activity going on in your body at any point in time, trust me, your body is working way harder than if you eat at longer intervals (three-to-four meals a day).
- says Pooja Makhija, Consulting Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian

More meals means less stored fat

Eating six to eight meals a day rather than three, is better because it boosts metabolism, controls blood sugar levels and helps in weight management. Consuming three meals increases the likelihood that one will start an exercise regime with a low blood sugar level. For instance, if we eat lunch around noon, generally our second meal of the day, we would not have much energy for an optimal, calorie-burning workout in the evening.

On the other hand, if we follow a six-meal-a-day plan and have a small meal around noon and another meal around 3 pm, our blood sugar level would be more stable, providing us with more energy for our workout.

Cortisol, a hormone, breaks down body fat. However, if we eat a large, high-calorie meal, cortisol is produced in large quantities, but transports the fat from under the skin to deep within the abdominal cavity. This increases the risk of chronic diseases including abdominal obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Incorporating a six-meal-a-day plan into one's routine decreases the magnitude of cortisol production.

Eating within 30 minutes of every exercise session enables our muscles to maximally replenish the glucose we used during the workout. Consuming another meal two hours after the post-workout meal further enhances post-exercise recovery and replenishment.

Eating every three-to-four hours can ward off hunger and prevent binges that lead to weight gain. It also maintains metabolism and can help regulate proper digestion to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort.

14 lakh examinees get ready to take JEE mains

NEW DELHI: The first Joint Engineering Entrance Examination Main after change of AIEEE format will be conducted on Sunday. Over 14 lakh engineering and architecture aspirants have registered for the entrance which is a record number.

Last year, 11.5 lakh aspirants took the test conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Experts are advising aspirants not be complacent as this may result in minor but critical mistakes, marring their chances of appearing for the JEE
Advanced as only the top 1.5 lakh candidates in the merit list of the 14 lakh will be eligible for the advanced exam, which is the entrance exam for the admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology.

While the offline (pen and paper) exam will be conducted on Sunday, the computer-based exam introduced last year will be conducted on April 9, 22, 23 and 25. The JEE (Main)-2013 (paper 1 of earlier AIEEE) will have one objective-type question paper. The three-hour paper will comprise physics, chemistry and mathematics.

Apart from the nomenclature, a lot of changes have been introduced in the exam from this year. The JEE (Main) examination 2013 is being conducted for admissions to BE/ BTech courses at National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Delhi Technological University and other Central Government-funded technical institutes. But unlike previous years, this year's JEE (Main) merit list will give 40% weightage (suitably normalized) to Class XII or other qualifying examination marks and 60% to performance in the entrance exam. And the significance of JEE (Main) from now on is that only 1.5 lakh of the top rankers in JEE (Main), which includes students from all categories, will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2013 (earlier known as IIT-JEE) for admission to the IITs, IIT BHU and ISM Dhanbad.

According to experts, the difficulty level in this exam is likely to be relatively lower and, therefore, students need to be more careful while attempting the paper. "A question of higher difficulty will be a challenge for a regular student. But a question of lower difficulty level can be tricky for bright students. So the students have to be very careful as paper of easy standard can result in silly mistakes which can be costly," Ananda Raman, mentor and director, FIIT JEE, Hyderabad, said.

Serbia, USA level at 1-1 after Davis Cup openers

BOISE: Novak Djokovic got Serbia off to a hot start, but American Sam Querrey's gritty victory over Viktor Troicki saw the United States pull level on the opening day of their Davis Cup World Group quarterfinal tie.

World No. 1 Djokovic beat big-serving John Isner in straight sets in the first singles match, recovering from an early break in the first set en route to a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 7-5 triumph.

The Serbian player saved the only break point he faced in the third set -- in the second game -- and broke Isner at love for a 6-5 advantage.

He served out the match with a love game, wrapping it up in two hours with a backhand winner that sent him dancing over to celebrate with his teammates.

Isner had made a quick start, breaking Djokovic for a 2-1 lead in the first set and holding for 3-1. But Djokovic found his rhythm on the indoor hard court in the Taco Bell Arena in Boise, which sits at an altitude of about 800 meters (2,600 feet), and broke back to level the set at 3-3.

Djokovic delivered a second-serve ace to take a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker and claimed the first set on his third set point when Isner knocked a backhand long.

The Serbian applied the pressure early in the second set, breaking Isner in the third game and widening the gap with another break in the seventh.

Tasked with getting the best-of-five tie back on terms, Querrey started strong, winning the first set and going up an early break in the second.

But he let that advantage slip away and after dropping the second and third sets had to dig deep for a 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

It was just the second five-set match victory of Querrey's career, and he finished it in style, breaking for a 5-4 lead in the fifth set and serving it out with a love game.

Serbian captain Bogdan Obradovic had called on Troicki for singles duty after world No. 10 Janko Tipsarevic opted out of the tie.

The winner will take on the victor of the quarterfinal tie between Canada and Italy in Vancouver.

Serbia's run to the 2010 Davis Cup title included a victory in their only other meeting with the United States, who have lifted the trophy 32 times.

US captain Jim Courier has a formidable weapon at his disposal for Saturday's doubles, when he'll send Bob and Mike Bryan against Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac.

INSPIRING STORY "

  A gift of love!

“Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears. Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred.

When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. “A boy, a big boy … called me a freak.”

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might mingle with other young people,” his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart.

The boy’s father had a session with the family physician. Could nothing be done?

“I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured,” the doctor decided. Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man. Two years went by.

Then, “You are going to the hospital, Son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret,” said the father. The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs.

Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. “But I must know!” He urged his father, “Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know … not yet.”

The years kept their profound secret, but the day did come … one of the darkest days that a son must endure.

He stood with his father over his mother’s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to reveal that the mother had no outer ears.

“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut,” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart.Real treasure lies not in what that can be seen, but what that cannot be seen.Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what that is done but not known.
