Congress may back Manmohan for PM in 2014; Rahul vs Modi unlikely

New Delhi: The Congress's pitch for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections seems to be not Rahul Gandhi vs Narendra Modi, but Manmohan Singh vs Narendra Modi.
The Congress is backing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a possible third term.
A day before Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi attempts to woo India Incorporate, the Prime Minister will also be reaching out.
Speaking at the Cabinet Committee on Investment on Tuesday, the Congress party backed Manmohan Singh for a third term in 2014.
Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi said that the Manmohan Singh-Sonia Gandhi dual power centre model has worked, just days after Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh's comments saying the exact opposite.
"The relationship between Sonia Gandhi and the PM is a model for the future.
The party will decide at a later time who will lead the 2014 election campaign.
Manmohan Singh is the leader now and every one accepts him," Dwivedi said.
Sources say that Congress President Sonia Gandhi also backed Manmohan Singh for a possible third term.
The Prime Minister was upset with Digvijaya's comment that the dual power centre hasn't worked and wanted his party to clarify.
The issue came into focus after Digvijaya Singh recently said that the twin power structure did not work well and that Rahul Gandhi should not choose a prime minister in case the party formed a government after 2014 general elections.
"I feel this model hasn't worked very well. There should not be two power centres. I think whoever is the prime minister must have the authority to function," Digvijaya Singh had said.
There has been speculation that Rahul Gandhi may choose a similar model if the Congress is able to form the next government at the centre in 2014, especially in the light of his utterances that the party, and not power, is his priority.

U.S. industry reviews Supreme Court decision on Novartis

The US industry on Wednesday said it is reviewing the order of the Supreme Court early this week that denied patent on Glivec, a cancer medication produced by Swiss drug maker Novartis, as Corporate America expressed dismay at the court verdict.
“We are aware of the Supreme Court decision and are reviewing the Court’s order,” the U.S. Trade Representative spokesperson Andrea Mead told PTI.
“We look forward to continued engagement and successful collaboration with India on these issues,” Mead said when asked on the U.S. position on the Supreme Court decision.
The US India Business Council (USIBC) expressed its unease over the Supreme Court on denying a patent on Glivec and said that this would impact innovation and investment climate in India as a time when the country needs foreign direct investment the most.
“Innovation requires the reward and protection of intellectual property. We are certain India’s leadership understands this, and that creating and maintaining an environment that inspires and enables innovation is in India’s ultimate, long-term interest.
“Such an environment is crucial if India is to attract investment in this or other highly complex sectors,” USIBC President Ron Somers said, expressing his disappointment over the court order.
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) in a statement expressed disappointed with the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to deny a patent on Glivec.
PhRMA is Washington-based lobbying group for brand-name manufacturers, which benefit from patents that create monopolies.
“This decision marks yet another example of the deteriorating innovation environment in India. Innovation is critical in meeting unmet needs of patients and is particularly relevant in the context of changing healthcare systems,” said PhRMA President and CEO John Castellani.
In order to solve the real health challenges of India’s patients, it is critically important that India promote a policy environment that supports continued research and development of new medicines for the health of patients in India and worldwide, he argued.
“Protecting intellectual property is fundamental to the discovery of new medicines. The research-based pharmaceutical industry is committed to working closely with the Indian Government and other stakeholders to find appropriate solutions to this challenge,” Castellani said.
Roger Bate, a global health expert at Washington-based think tank American Enterprise Institute, said as a result of the Supreme Court order, Indians will receive lower-quality copies of Glivec and other drugs, and are less likely to receive cutting-edge products in the future.

5 Foods that are bad for your skin

With growing awareness, people have become more health as well as beauty conscious. In this aesthetic-loving age, it is very essential to let people know that what they consider 'aesthetic' is also related to their skin.
Importantly, manifestations of your nutritional status as well as body's nutritional needs reflect on the skin's health.
That's why we have today Priya Jain, Dietician, P D Hinduja National Hospital & MRC, Mahim, Mumbai who is going yo share with us a list of 10 foods that can harm your skin.
Foods that disturb water balance Dehydration causes drying of the skin. Wrinkling is a common side effect of lack of moisture in the skin. Dehydration and acne are interlinked because drying of skin and dead skin cells coming together cause acne.
Excess salt Excess salt retains additional fluid in the body causing swelling and a puffy look to the skin. The skin texture is spoilt on prolonged salt abuse. Papads, pickles, salted foods, table salt, brined/canned food products are the potential sources of salt to the body.
Excess caffeine Caffeine is a known stimulant which increase the cortisol production in the body and enhances the ageing process by thinning the skin. This dehydrates the skin and even leads to wrinkling. In addition, caffeine is a diuretic which further increases the risk of dehydration. So beware when you decide to go for an additional helping of coffee, tea or chocolates too!
Alcohol Alcohol inhibits the Anti-Diuretic Hormone secretion thus causing dehydration. Furthermore, it also causes vasodilatation, which then leads to excess water loss through the skin. This is also known to be a contributing factor to acute phases of psoriasis as per the American Academy of Dermatology.
Foods with high glycemic load These foods cause drastic fluctuations in the blood sugar. This leads to excess secretion of insulin and androgens during the high and low bouts respectivel. A major reason to contribute to surplus sebum production, enhanced skin cell division and aggregation of dead skin cells - leading to acne.

Rights body objects to mandatory Hindi in Delhi University

NEW DELHI: The Asian Centre for Human Rights has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against what they call "Hindi-sation of Delhi University." The complaint was filed a day after a group of students from the northeast states protested against the introduction of a compulsory Hindi or Modern Indian Language paper in the four-year undergraduate programme.
Previously, a student was allowed to opt for another subject instead of a MIL if the student hadn't studied it in secondary or higher secondary school.
The switch imposes languages many students from the northeast states would not have studied. The protestors - organized by the North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) - also argued that the university does not have the infrastructure to teach all the languages in the list of MILs, as per the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India.
"This is a conspiracy to keep the students of northeast India out of Delhi University. This is an act against national integration," says Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.
"Only three languages, Bodo, Assamese and Manipuri, are recognized as MIL. Further, not a single college under Delhi University has a faculty to teach these languages," says the statement by ACHR.

Star-studded glitzy opening ceremony kicks off IPL 6 in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Long after many had written its epitaph, the IPL lives. Shedding the burgeoning burden of living up to its predecessor, it defies and grows with every edition. The world's richest T20 league made another rousing start, the first notes of IPL-6 struck at the throbbing Salt Lake Stadium certainly louder in decibel and design.
If the IPL lives and grows in the moments it creates, the 90-minute opening ceremony did make many. It was not just bigger, glitzier and snazzier than the openers before it, but the city's famous fans descended on the stadium to lend its unique fervour.
Like a good game of T20, it had a bit of everything, save a close finish. From the rendition of the Bard's verse by Shah Rukh Khan himself to flying drummers and dancing girls swirling magically to heart-pounding music and rhythmic lights, one of them while dangling from a bunch of balloons, the show was a kaleidoscope that captured the essence of IPL as 'cricketainment'.
And, of course, Bollywood was right there at the centre of it all. Superstar and KKR's principal owner SRK was in the company of his two leading ladies, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif, and soon after they set the stage on fire, Cuban-American Pitbull gave the show the rap and some international flavour.
His feet-tapping numbers were lapped up by the crowd of some 60,000, a huge chunk of which was made up of GenNow. If the crowd erupted as SRK's recorded voice filled the arena at the very onset with Tagore's most famous verse from the Geetanjali —
"Where the mind is without fear..." — there was more to follow in Aaguner Parashmoni and Joyo Hok, which had 300 dancers swaying to the inspiring tunes in the backdrop of a Tagore image created with lights. The rest of the programme was mostly a heavy dose of high-decibel fare, though the violin butted in to bring a more soulful and solemn interlude as the nine skippers signed the 'Spirit of Cricket' pledge. A few of them struggled to scribble their signatures on the touchscreens, while some signed effortlessly.
Dancers flashing across the dais in unison, forming patterns on the ground and Bollywood beauties jiving sensually to hit numbers made the crowd go wild. So, if Katrina had the audience on its feet with Sheela ki Jawani and Chikni Chameli, Deepika had them drooling over with Tum hi ho bandhu.
While Deepika pranced energetically on stage, Katrina rolled in on a giant throne, wearing a glittering crown. She sizzled as she grooved to the music.
The loudest cheer, of course, was reserved for SRK who marked his presence with his trademark moves. Making a grand entry to the theme music of Don, the superstar looked dapper in a dark leather jacket and stylish shades. He was quick to thank "Mamata di" and the "City of Joy" for making the show possible. Soon enough, he was jiving to "Tume se mil ke dil ka jo haal.." and "Chammak challo". There was more in store for the audience as SRK turned the clock back to shake a leg to "Kaali kaali ankhen". He then left the stage and spilled on to the turf to welcome Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri. The duo enthralled the audience with hits from the Seventies and Eighties.
And there was a sprinkling of cricket, too. KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir received the IPL trophy from a "flying fairy" who floated around the stadium strapped to a bunch of balloons.

" INSPIRING STORY "
Keep your dream
I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse.
It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses.
As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.
Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. “He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’ “The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’
“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land.
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this.
However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”
“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”
