Pope Francis lauded for interfaith dialogue
The election of Pope Francis has thrilled Jewish leaders in Argentina, who predict that their friend will continue to foster warm relations and open dialogue between Catholicism and other faiths during his pontificate. 'He's got a very deep capacity for dialogue with other religions,' Rabbi Alejandro Avruj told The Associated Press on Monday. 'He spoke of light as renovation, of the re-inauguration of the temple of Jerusalem 2,200 years ago, and the need to carry light to the world.'

DMK pullout heightens chances of snap elections; UPA in minority but says it's stable
New Delhi: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the second biggest constituent of the ruling government, severed ties with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) on Tuesday, but the move posed no immediate threat to the minority government, which said it is "stable and will continue to stay in power". The M Karunanidhi-led DMK, which, for days had been threatening to pull out from the UPA in protest against government not taking up its concerns in the proposed UN resolution against Sri Lanka, said its five ministers in the Union Ministry would also tender resignations by Wednesday.
A delegation of DMK leaders, led by TR Baalu, handed over the letter of withdrawal of support from the UPA to President Pranab Mukherjee at 10.30 pm on Tuesday. The UPA is in minority in Parliament now.
The withdrawal heightens the chance that the government will call a snap national election if it is unable to pass major legislation, although neither the ruling Congress party nor the main opposition have shown much appetite for early polls. Elections need to be held by May 2014.
But hinting at a possible return in the alliance in the future, the 88-year-old former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said DMK was ready to reconsider its decision if Parliament adopts a resolution before March 21, taking DMK's concerns on board. Karunanidhi, as well as his political rival, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, have been demanding amendments to the UN resolution against Sri Lanka.
The main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has not yet spelled out its position on resolution, called the government a "lame duck' and NPA (Non-Progressive Alliance) afte DMK's pull out. BJP leaders, however, maintained that they have not been sounded out by the senior ministers about any resolution as demanded by the DMK as a condition for supporting the government.
Two parties, the DMK and the Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK, have been demanding that India vote in favour of the resolution. They have also demanded introduction of the words 'Eelam' and 'genocide' in the US-sponsored resolution and have asked for an international probe into crime committed by the Sri Lankan Army against Lankan Tamils during the almost three decade long conflict with LTTE cadres.
However, government sources later said the DMK never insisted on the term 'genocide' during its meet with the Congress leaders, which was held in New Delhi on Monday to broker a way out of the logjam. "They sought a resolution in Indian Parliament and demanded amendments to the UN resolution on Lanka," they added.
However, Jayalalithaa dismissed Karunanidhi's move as just a "drama" and indicated it was an action which came too late in the day. His announcement that the party was withdrawing its support to the Centre over the Lankan Tamils issue was a late decision, she said while also referring to a Tamil saying.
The DMK, which draws its support from Tamils, announced its withdrawal from the coalition in protest against the government's perceived dithering on a UN resolution on war crimes in neighbouring Sri Lanka between that country's Sinhalese-majority government and its own minority Tamils.

Volkswagen to recall 385,000 China vehicles
SHANGHAI: German auto giant Volkswagen will recall 384,181 vehicles in China over gearbox defects, it said Wednesday after state television criticized it over the issue.
In a company statement Volkswagen said an electronic malfunction could cause cars to lose power while being driven.
"In isolated cases, an electronic malfunction in the control unit or a lack of oil pressure inside the gearbox mechatronics may result in a power interruption," the statement said.
Steering and braking would not be impacted, it added.
The vehicles affected include both imported models such as the Audi A3 and domestically-made ones, among them the Magotan and Passat, said the Chinese government's quality watchdog, which on Saturday had ordered the recall.
The move followed a year-long investigation, it added, and the cars involved came off the assembly line between December 2008 and early this month.
Volkswagen said it would replace components in the gearbox of affected vehicles for free.
The recall came after China Central Television alleged in an annual corporate malpractice programme that Volkswagen had used substandard gearboxes in some models, causing acceleration problems and accidents.
Volkswagen, which is Europe's biggest carmaker, said last week it planned to open seven more factories in China, the world's largest car market.
It currently has two passenger vehicle production joint ventures with China's SAIC Motor and FAW Group.
"In the coming years, we will build at least 10 new factories, seven of those in China alone," VW chief executive Martin Winterkorn told reporters last week as the company announced record net profit.

Virgo Aug. 23 to Sept. 22 You may find your temper or frustration levels rise seemingly out of nowhere as Mars and Uranus line up in Aries. You are never one to sit and stew so if no problem or solution clearly presents itself, throw yourself into a project that is very active but also has an end point you can reach today. Channeling this intensity into a task will give you a sense of accomplishment and leave you satisfied instead of restless.
Libra Sept. 23 to Oct. 22 If you experience friction and frustration with a partner or friend today, try to stay calm, as the conversation or situation may escalate unexpectedly. You will want to be as forthright as possible to get your point across, but also maintain a healthy attitude of humility and kindness to get the best outcome. If you find that tempers are too high, let things cool down until at least March 24, if possible, before addressing the topic again.
Scorpio Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
You may be busier than usual and will have to stay on your toes to move quickly from one thing to another and keep everything afloat. Support your health so you can keep up the pace, but stay focused as you move through your tasks so that haste doesn't work you into a frenzy. Carelessness may lead to accidents while driven Mars and impulsive Uranus align in Aries, so make safety a priority, even if it makes things take longer.
Sagittarius Nov. 22 to Dec. 21 You likely will burst with energy, which may move from enthusiasm to restlessness if you don't find a channel for it. Do something unexpected to stir up inspiration for the creative urges you may feel now. Having fun is never frivolous for you; it always reinforces the core of you and ripples outward into everything you do. However, as Mars and Uranus team up in Aries, take extra care and attention with your safety while you're having fun as you may be more accident prone.
Capricorn Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
If you feel restless or frustrated with an unsettled situation that is long overdue for resolution, you may find your patience waning as Mars, planet of action, teams up with Uranus, planet of change. If circumstances prevent you from taking total charge of the situation and handling it, take action to at least do what you can so you feel you are progressing. Attacking a home fix-it or organization project could be a satisfying way to burn off excess energy, but take extra caution to guard against accidents.
Aquarius Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
You may find it unacceptable to compromise or sit in silence today. Situations may to call out for clear, direct, and honest communication and a willingness to offer opinions, even if they are unpopular or may cause conflict. Take care that you don't enter confrontations driven solely by frustration; you may feel impatient with nonsense but overly aggressive communication may cause you to say something you will regret. Defend your right to your opinion, but honor that same right in others.
Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20 You may find yourself prone to impulsive spending today as action-oriented Mars and spontaneous Uranus line up. If you are trying to stick to a careful budget, you may want to avoid situations that will inspire you to spend. However, if you have the funds, you may enjoy a small spending spree at your favorite shop, especially if there's an item you've wanted. An evening out at a special location may also be rewarding.

Redefine way of imparting education: Pranab Mukherjee

NEW DELHI: The need to improve both the quantity and quality of higher education in the country was the predominant theme of President Pranab Mukherjee's speech at the 90th convocation of Delhi University on Tuesday. Mukherjee, who is also the visitor of DU, stressed the need for better distance learning facilities to make education more accessible in remote areas. He added that vacant posts for the academic staff in colleges was an immediate concern.
DU has not fared well on these counts. More than 40% of the total teaching strength of 9,000 is working on an ad hoc and temporary basis. The radical reforms undertaken recently at the university, including implementation of the semester system and the proposed four-year undergraduate programme, have been centred on conventional courses, and beyond the reach of School Of Open Learning students.
Mukherjee said open and distance learning is the most effective tool for making higher education accessible to everyone while laying stress on increasing enrolment. He was also in favour of improvising modules to enable learning and provide higher education in the remote areas. "The education sector is today confronted by problems relating to both quantity and quality ... If we are to redefine the way education is imparted by our educational institutions, the time is now," Mukherjee said.
Mukherjee said that despite there being a central university in every state, many places in the country didn't have a higher educational institution that could absorb aspiring students. He added that there was a need to incorporate scholarships and other aids in the educational structure for increasing the inclusivity and affordability of higher education.
Discussing the progress made by the educational sector in the country, Mukherjee said, "An honest answer would reveal that we have miles and miles to go before we can say that we have arrived," he said. He found it "simply unacceptable" that no Indian university finds a place among the top 200 global institutes. "We must develop our universities into global leaders, and for that, the best practices in other countries should be carefully studied and adopted with necessary changes to suit our conditions," he said.

Maria Sharapova aiming for rare double at Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE: After winning the PNB Paribas Open last week, Maria Sharapova is aiming for a rare double when she lines at the Sony Open.
Only two players in WTA history have won back-to-back Indian Wells and Key Biscayne titles: Steffi Graf in 1994 and 1996, and Kim Clijsters in 2005.
Sharapova, who won her second BNP Paribas title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday, isn't scheduled to play until Friday at the Sony Open.
All the seeded players in the men's and women's draw receive a first-round bye.
"These tournaments are always really tough because they're close together," the No. 3-seeded Sharapova said. "As soon as you're done with the first one (Indian Wells) you're onto the next one and you're here. I'm looking forward to trying to take it a step further (here) this year."
Sharapova came close to achieving the back-to-back victories in 2006, winning the Indian Wells tournament and reaching the final at Key Biscayne.
Overall, she's been in four Sony Open finals, including last year when she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
For Sharapova, who moved to the United States from Russia as a 9-year-old, the Sony Open is the event where she first watched professional tennis.
"I have a lot of history here," Sharapova said. Miami "is the city where I first landed when I came to the United States. I've been a fan of this tournament since I was young because I came here with my family to watch it.
"And then I was able to play in it and be a part of it and I've been to three or four finals here. So, hopefully, I can lift the trophy here one day."
The fourth-seeded Radwanska won three titles last year and has 10 overall in her career. She's never successfully defended a title, but she's hoping the Sony Open could be the first time she achieves the feat.
"It's always great to be back at a place where you have great memories and had great matches," said Radwanska, who reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year.
"There's always pressure and a lot of points to defend. But every week the top players feel a lot of pressure."
There were 10 main draw women's matches played on Tuesday. Veteran Japanese player Kimiko Date-Krumm beat Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa 6-2, 6-0.
Two former top 10 players -- Flavia Pennetta of Italy and Andrea Petkovic of Germany -- were in action.
Pennetta won her first-round match 6-4, 6-1 over Johanna Larsson of Sweden. Petkovic, playing in only her second tournament of the year following a knee injury at the Hopman Cup in January, defeated Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-3, 6-1.
In other results, Ayumi Morita of Japan defeated Heather Watson of Britain 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, Kristina Mladecnovic of France had a 7-5, 6-2 win over Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada and Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan battled in the second-set tiebreaker to secure a 6-4, 7-6 (15) victory over Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.

" INSPIRING STORY "
Importance of keeping one’s word
We all know that the pandavas left their kingdom for 13 long years for keeping up their word! Well, for Arjuna going away from the bhogas of a king, for the sake of truth, was not new. He did it once well before the aranyavaas. The story goes like this:
The kalyaanam of pandavas with Draupadi was an unusual one. However, it was perfectly according to dharma shastras. Infact Draupadi is one of the greatest pativratas and praised even by Lord Krishna for her Dharma vartana. A few reasons to justify the kalyaanam:
Kunti Devi, the mother of pandavas, who never knew what a lie was, gave her will. Vyaasa Maharshi, one of the avataar of Lord Vishnu, ordered the kalyaanam to be done. Lord Shiva, pleased with her tapas, gave a boon to Draupadi to marry the pandavas. Pandavas, though were five physically, were all amshas of Indra, the King of the Gods. Hence, pandavas were actually one.
Naarada, again an avataar of Lord Vishnu, suggested some rules to be followed by pandavas and Draupadi for living together. This is because, though they were amshas of Gods and Godesses, since they had a human form some addition rules according to dharma shastras needed to be followed.
One of the rules was that: Draupadi should spend one year with each of the pandavas and while she was with one of them, no other pandavas should visit the palace where they might be. In case of any breach of their rule, one-year pilgrimage was prescribed by way of penance leaving the kingdom.
The pandavas and Draupadi were living happily until one day: a brahmana came running to Arjuna saying that the thieves had stolen his cows. Arjuna wanted to rush with him to catch the thieves but he realised that his bow and arrows were kept in Yudhisthira's palace and he was there in the company of Draupadi.
He hesitated for a while, then seeing brahmana's plight he rushed in to Yudhisthira 's palace took his bow and arrows and ran to catch the thieves. After he caught the thieves and punished them, after restoring the cows of the brahmana, Arjuna came back to Yudhisthira and told him about his transgression of the rule.
Yudhisthira, knowing the reason of the breach of their rule, said their is no need for Arjuna to take the pilgrimage. Since it is a mistake committed towards him, and that too for a good reason, he will pardon arjuna . However, Arjuna would never break his word. He immediately set out for a one-year pilgrimage. May be this is why Arjuna is such a favourite sakha of Lord Krishna.
Morals in the Story:
The story shows how important it is to keep up ones word, whether it is of any consequence or not, how much ever difficult it is.
