US: Factory output rebounds

Manufacturing output bounced back in February, the latest signal of strength in an economy that is showing clear momentum after a near-stall at the end of last year. Policymakers at the central bank meet next week to assess the economy and are widely expected to keep purchasing $85 billion in bonds per month to spur even stronger economic growth. The Fed has said it would keep up asset purchases until it sees a substantial improvement in the labour market outlook.

Wildlife meeting gives 100s of species protection

A 12-day global wildlife conference concluded on Thursday after granting better protection to hundreds of threatened animal and plant species. More than 1,000 delegates at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora voted to introduce trade regulations for vulnerable animal species such as sharks, manta rays, tortoises, and turtles, and rejected proposals that would have allowed three species of crocodiles to be traded internationally.

Strong auto output boosts US factory production

A strong increase in auto output boosted US factory production last month, the latest sign that manufacturing is helping drive economic growth after lagging for much of 2012. Factory output rose a seasonally adjusted 0.8 per cent in February from January, after falling 0.3 per cent in the previous month, the Federal Reserve said Friday. The biggest gain was in autos and auto parts, where production increased 3.6 per cent after falling 4.9 per cent in January. Car sales have risen steadily this year after reaching a five-year high in 2012.

Switzerland: A closer look at the Higgs boson

Scientists working at the world's biggest atom smasher near Geneva have announced they are confident that the new subatomic particle discovered last summer is a version of the long-sought Higgs boson. The particle bears key attributes of the so-called 'God particle' that was theorized nearly a half-century ago as fundamental to the creation of the universe. It took thousands of scientists from around the world to hunt the particle in the atom-smasher operated by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The following takes a closer look at the Higgs boson.

UPA-II shot itself in the foot, says NCP leader Praful Patel

New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel, whose party is part of UPA government, on Friday said the UPA-II government has shot itself in the foot by delaying key reforms.

Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel said the UPA-II has not been able to emulate the success story of UPA-I.

"But at the same time I can admit that being on side of the government that we ourselves have been one of the biggest stumbling blocks in the way of success of the country," Patel said. Patel added UPA-I functioned well, despite it being a large coalition.

"I think when we formed UPA-I, everybody just thought that it is a change of the government from NDA and therefore UPA will be a large coalition driven by left and would probably not be able to show way to the country."

"But UPA-I inspite of all the limitations could give this country a very good government, the reason why we came back and formed UPA-II," he noted.

However, the UPA government in its second innings has not performed as per the expectations, he added.

"But ever since we came with UPA-II, if we see the way we have been functioning and I have been a critic of my government and therefore may not be music to the ears of my colleagues.

Well, I can certainly say that we on many occasions have been shooting ourselves in the foot," the minister said.

Giving examples about the delay in reforms in the key sectors in India, Patel said the power sector has been one of the most neglected ones. "Say the power sector.

One of the, I would say a sector with great potential. India still lives in darkness.

But still we have not been able to get out of this morale. The reason is that we have built in an activism within this system.

We have built in lot of roadblocks, which I think can certainly be overcome in a very very simple fashion," he added.

Astrology

Aries March 21 to April 19
Now that Mercury is direct, you will begin to feel a greater sense of clarity. If you've been keeping your thoughts to yourself more than usual, you'll soon feel confident in expressing yourself with vigor again. Today you may decide to look over any writing work you've done over the last couple of weeks in solitude. You may also spend time alone considering your options if there's a vital decision ahead. Trust your mind now - it'll lead with your intuition.

Taurus April 20 to May 20
You might begin the process of launching a website or major Internet campaign. If you're in the technology industry you're in luck, and today there is a strong potential for positive news to arrive. In addition, there may be an opportunity to communicate in a way you have never explored before, such as radio or television. Your words will have the potential to inspire others, and now you'll have an even greater reach than before.

Gemini May 21 to June 20
geminiNow that Mercury, your ruler, is back on track, you will begin to see forward movement in your career once more. Today, you might decide to flesh out one of your goals on paper, and if so, you'll notice your thoughts flow with greater ease. You may have a vital meeting scheduled with a higher up. As you communicate you'll notice that he or she is more interested in your ideas than in previous weeks. You'll be pleased.

Cancer June 21 to July 22
If you're worried about potential delays with travel plans, don't be. In fact, you can expect smooth sailing from here on out. You'll still want to double check that you've remembered to pack any important items and that you have all of your paperwork in order. If you're scheduled for a flight, cruise, or other trip in the coming days, you'll notice less delay and frustration than anything you may have experienced if you traveled in the last three weeks. You'll be relieved.

Leo July 23 to Aug. 22
leoFiling your tax return should be less of a headache now. Mercury has been retrograde in the area of your chart that rules joint finances, investments, and taxes. Garbled information might have come your way about new tax laws, potential write-offs, or tax credits, leaving you with plenty of questions. Now that Mercury has directed his orbit again, you might have a conversation with your accountant or a financial advisor that gives you more clarity. Expect answers.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories founder Anji Reddy passes away

HYDERABAD/MUMBAI: Anji Reddy, the pharmaceutical industry pioneer who helped establish India's reputation as a supplier of inexpensive medicines to the world, died in Hyderabad on Friday after prolonged illness. The 72-year-old was battling cancer.

The company he founded and chaired, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, is India's second-largest pharmaceutical company by market capitalisation (Rs 31,000 crore) and the first to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2001. He also founded a string of charities that work in the areas of education, healthcare and providing livelihoods.

"Dr Reddy had an ambition of putting the company on the world map, which he has done. He was a philanthropist and gave away a lot of what he earned for common cause, which is rare among Indian rich people. He was humble, simple and mild-mannered. These qualities coming together in one person is so rare," said PN Devarajan, a close friend who served on the board on Dr Reddy's Laboratories.

Anji Reddy is survived by a son and a daughter. His son Satish Reddy is the managing director and chief operating officer of the company. GV Prasad, his son-in-law, is the vice-chairman and CEO of Dr Reddy's Laboratories.

A senior company executive said a clear succession plan was put in place before Anji Reddy fell ill and there is no possibility of a takeover threat or disruption. "Neither of the promoters is interested in selling their stake nor is there any takeover threat."

The promoters own a little over 25% of Dr Reddy's, and the bulk of their ownership is through the family-owned APS Trust.

An employee of the public sector Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals (IDPL), Anji Reddy resigned from the company in 1984 to set up Dr Reddy's Laboratories with a capital of Rs 25 lakh. The company, whose turnover in 2011-12 was Rs 7,000 crore, began by making the ingredients that go into making drugs.

But Anji Reddy's aim was always to be an innovator of new medicines. He created the Dr Reddy's Research Foundation in 1993 to help the company's drug discovery programme and established an elaborate R&D organisation in Cambridge, United Kingdom, under Chirotech Technology.

"I met Anji Reddy two years ago at Cambridge at the opening of Chirotech Technology and at that time I told him how jealous I was of him that he managed to do what I couldn't do in my university town," said YK Hamied, the chairman of CiplaBSE -0.29 %, India's third-largest pharmaceutical company by market value.

Even in his last media interview, when he spoke to this paper nearly two years ago, Anji Reddy said his "fervent desire" was to discover a new-generation diabetes drug. "It is eminently doable and I am chasing it," he said.

Never skip your breakfast

In spite of health experts going blue in the face trying to get people to understand the importance of having breakfast, there are thousands who skip the first (and most crucial) meal of the day citing a motley of reasons.

Dietician Dr Sunita Dube says that having a hearty breakfast helps control excess hunger throughout the day. "Since we technically fast overnight while sleeping, forgoing breakfast adds to this fasting period and may disrupt blood sugar balance and insulin output.

Skipping breakfast also triggers bad eating habits during the day, as cravings ensue and quick-fix fast foods are often eaten. Having breakfast boosts metabolism and increases your energy levels throughout the day. When you miss it, your energy is reduced and physical activity levels decline," reckons Dr Dube.

An ideal, healthy breakfast A healthy breakfast provides 25 per cent of the total energy and nutrients required by the body. "Ideally, your first meal of the day should comprise a perfect combination of carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Make sure you include fruits, whole grains, berries and and good fats. Opt for light and soft idlis with sambhar, plain dosas with green chutney, milk with cornflakes or wheatflakes, vegetable poha or upma with a milkshake and sprouts. Also, include high fibre fruits like apples, papayas, muskmelons, oranges or watermelons," says dietician and sports nutritionist, Deepshikha Agarwal.

What to avoid in the morning l Processed, deep fried or oily food, preserved meat, left over or junk food, cakes, pastries, and only juices are a no-no. l Avoid refined foods like white rice and white bread. Instead opt for whole wheat bread and cereals. Stay away from deep fried pakodas, puris, samosas, doughnuts, cookies, potato chips, candy bars and sodas. l Food items like vada pav, bhajias, wafers, pizzas and French fries are loaded with fat, salt and calories and have very little fibre — keep them at an arm's length.

Disadvantages of skipping breakfast Experts say that skipping breakfast may put you on the fast track to weight gain, heart disease, osteoporosis, irritability or mood swings, menstrual irregularity, low energy levels, low memory and hormonal stress. "A study shows that people who skipped breakfast developed higher bad LDL cholesterol levels, and were less sensitive to insulin than people who ate breakfast every day," says Dr Dube. And for those who skip breakfast in a bid to lose weight, you ought to read this. "People who miss breakfast tend to feel fatigued early on in the day and have low concentration levels, affecting their efficiency. Skipping breakfast also decreases metabolic rate making weight loss difficult. Research proves that people who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than people who eat a healthy breakfast. So, if you're looking forward to losing weight, have a nutritious breakfast to get a healthy start to the day," suggests Dr Agarwal.

Importance of a healthy breakfast in children and teens The amount of food that a child needs varies according to height, built, gender, and activity levels. "Most kids will usually eat the amount of food that's right for them, however, it is up to the parents to ensure that their children have the right foods available to choose from. Eating a meal should be both a healthy and an enjoyable occasion — a fact that many parents overlook when planning a meal for growing children. Good eating habits start from home so be a good role model.

Pisces Feb. 19 to March 20
Although you may have experienced a difficult time recently if you needed to make a major decision, you were not trying to evade it. Rather, it's likely that you simply needed time to allow all of the facts and details to simmer in your mind. The best way for you to focus on this matter was to leave it alone for a stretch of time and then come back to it with a fresh perspective. That time is now.

CBSE Class XII board accountancy exam foxes students

NEW DELHI: The CBSE Class XII board accountancy paper on Friday proved challenging, particularly tricky was the HOTS (higher order thinking skills) section. Having sailed through relatively easy papers earlier, on Friday even above-average students emerged from the examination hall looking grim and worried.

Set three's question number 22 was of BCom standard and way too stiff for Class XII students, some teachers said. Another major exam on Friday, Biology, was a cakewalk.

"Part A of the accountancy question paper was tricky. When we started writing the answers, it seemed we'd complete well on time. Finally, we just about scraped through. The difficulty level was certainly high," Ananya Bhakti of Bloom Public School, Vasant Kunj, said.

Questions worth around 20 marks were tricky, indirect and testing. These made the going difficult, the teachers said. Examinees struggled with the section on fundamentals of partnership. "Even my best students were not very happy after the exams. Some changes were made in the syllabus mid-course and students were probably expecting a less difficult paper, like in business studies," accountancy teacher at Ahlcon International, Mayur Vihar, Neelam Gupta, said.

Many students complained they got no time for revision and were stretched to the limit completing the paper. "The calculations were very lengthy. Though questions were from the NCERT syllabus, the HOTS questions posed a challenge even for good students," a teacher said. But CBSE experts who analyse the papers on a day-to-day basis called the paper balanced.

Biology got a universal "easy" rating and students walked out of exam centres confident of good scores.

Wozniacki to meet Sharapova in Indian Wells final

INDIAN WELLS: Former champion Caroline Wozniacki battled through a marathon encounter to upset fourth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 2-6 6-4 7-5 on Friday and reach her third BNP Paribas Open final in four years.

The eighth-seeded Dane, winner at Indian Wells in 2011 after being a losing finalist the previous year, held off a late fightback by Kerber to scrape through in a wildly fluctuating contest lasting two-and-a-half hours.

In a match littered with 14 service breaks, Wozniacki led 4-1 and then 5-3 in the third set but the German clawed her way back to 5-6 before being broken for a seventh and final time when she netted a forehand.

Wozniacki will next face 2006 champion Maria Sharapova, who overcome fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-3 in the second semi-final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Sharapova, like Wozniacki a former world number one, will also be appearing in her third final here, having been demolished by Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the title match last year.

"I led 4-1 in the third and should have finished it off there but she's a great fighter," a jubilant Wozniacki said courtside after ending a run of three consecutive losses to the German. "I played a bit short and she was all over it.

"It is very special," the 22-year-old Dane said of reaching her third final at Indian Wells. "I really enjoy this tournament. I think it shows. I have done great results here in the past, and this is another very good one."

Kerber who won her first WTA singles title in Paris last year, raced into a 4-1 lead before taking the opening set in 38 minutes after Wozniacki hit a backhand service return long.

The 25-year-old German appeared to be in cruise control when she broke her opponent's serve for a fourth time at the start of the second set, then holding to 2-0 up but the match effectively turned in the seventh game.

MARATHON GAME

At 3-3, Wozniacki survived nine deuces and five break points before holding serve and going on to level the match when she broke Kerber in the 11th game after the German netted a forehand.

"We had some really good points in that game, and that was definitely very important in the match," Wozniacki said of that marathon game in the second set. "I managed to turn it around."

Kerber, who had not dropped a set in her three previous matches before gaining a walkover into the semi-finals when seventh-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur withdrew due to a calf injury, applauded Wozniacki's play.

"She was moving better and hit the ball a little bit higher," the German left-hander said. "It's not easy to lose a match like this, but well done to her. It was a tough match from the beginning.

"I started very well, but she found her game in the second set. And it was not easy for me, but I think it was a close and good match. At the end she won important points."

Four-times grand slam singles champion Sharapova broke her good friend Kirilenko in the third game of the match and went on to take a hard-fought first set in an hour.

The slender Russian then tightened her grip in the second set with much sharper serving, breaking her opponent twice more to seal victory on her first match point with a crunching forehand winner down the line.

"I've known Maria since we were little girls so there are no secrets out there on court," second seed Sharapova said courtside. "It's always tough to play against someone when you have played so many tournaments together.

"I started to serve better in the second set and that gave me a few free points. She gets so many balls back and likes to play those long points. My job was to be more aggressive than usual."

INSPIRING STORY "

  The Ship of Friendship

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island.

The two survivors who have been a good friends, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God.

However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.

The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s parcel of land remained barren.

After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife.

The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing.

Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.

Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island.

The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island.

He considered the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”

“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”

“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.” Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”

“He prayed that all your prayers be answered “

Moral: For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us (Congregational Prayer). Value your friends, don’t leave your loved ones behind.
