Canada January trade deficit dwindles as exports rise

Canada's trade deficit in January dwindled to just C$237 million ($230 million) as exports grew at a faster rate than imports, Statistics Canada said on Thursday. The deficit -- less than the C$600 million predicted by market operators -- represented the best performance since the C$21 million surplus recorded in March 2012. Statscan revised December's deficit to C$332 million from an initial $901 million.

Greek unemployment falls for first time since 2008

Greece's jobless rate fell in December for the first time since a crippling recession began five years ago, helped by a bailout deal that propped up companies' willingness to hire in the short-term. Unemployment dropped to 26.4 per cent from a revised, record 26.6 per cent a month earlier, state statistics service ELSTAT said. Economic sentiment in December rose to its highest in almost three years.

US: Dow ends at another record high, S&P up on job picture

Wall Street mostly edged higher on Wednesday, with the Dow hitting another record, helped by a private payroll survey that bodes well for the monthly jobs report due at the week's end. Improved labour market data from the private sector sparked the positive tone and boosted confidence for the US government's payroll report on Friday. The data from payrolls processor ADP followed similarly strong reads on housing and the services sector, reports that have contributed to lifting the Dow to historic levels and pushing up the S&P 500 to just 1.5 per cent below its own record close.

Weekly US unemployment claims fall to 340,000

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell to a seasonally adjusted 340,000 last week, driving down the four-week average to its lowest level in five years. The drop is a positive sign ahead of Friday's report on February job growth. Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. When they fall, it suggests that companies are shedding fewer jobs. More hiring may follow.

West Bengal: TMC MP Saugata Roy resigns as Mamata Banerjee's adviser

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy has resigned as adviser to the West Bengal Government's Commerce, Industries and IT Ministry over alleged differences with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"Yes, Saugata Roy has resigned from the post of adviser to the state government's commerce, industries and IT department," a senior TMC leader said on condition of anonymity.
Roy who was in Delhi could not be contacted.

His resignation came days after he questioned the possibility of setting up large industries in the state.

Roy had said that the possibility of setting up large industries in the state was very bleak and the future of the state depended on small and medium-scale industries.

Roy's comment was interpreted in political circles as criticism of Mamata Banerjee's land policy, which advocated that the state government would have no role to play in land acquisition for industries in the state.

Roy's comments had previously drawn sharp reaction from industries minister Partha Chatterjee who said that the problem was not land, but lack of infrastructure. Earlier, Roy had openly slammed the TMC's student wing for allegedly attacking teachers and principals of schools and colleges.

Meanwhile, Industries minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here that he had no information about resignation of Saugata Roy as adviser to the commerce, industries and IT ministry. "I have no information.

Saugata Roy is one of our veteran leaders. I can't give an imaginary answer," the minister said. To a question, Chatterjee said there were no differences between him and Roy.

India trumps Pakistan's Iran rice trade boom with oil rupees

Indian rice exports direct to Iran have bounced back, thanks to shippers being paid up front in rupees from a huge pool of oil money owed to Iran by Indian refiners.

"Now business is being done directly because Iran is allowed to open letters of credit in Indian rupees because the government has to pay money to Iran for the oil," said Suresh Manchanda, marketing director of a Delhi-based company which exports rice, wheat and sugar globally.

"For the importers back in Iran, Indian rupees are easily available to them via the government, so they can do business in a much easier way than doing business in any other currency," Manchanda told Reuters at the Gulf Food trade show in Dubai.

"For all practical purposes the money never leaves anywhere, the money is already in India." India is Tehran's biggest rice supplier but shipments were held up in early 2012 after Iranian buyers defaulted on payments. Many Indian suppliers then stopped sales on credit.

Tightened sanctions on shipping and bank transfers between Iran and India started a boom in Pakistani rice trucked across the remote border into Iran by groups based in Quetta, grains traders from Pakistan and India said at the world's biggest food show last week.

Problems getting paid by private Iranian buyers hit by a slide in the value of the rial also saw the rice flow from India being routed through Dubai, with wholesalers there taking on the payment risk in return for a mark-up.

Before Western sanctions aimed at stopping Tehran's disputed nuclear programme began to bite, Indian official data show rice sales to the Islamic Republic were surging.

They more than doubled in the financial year of 2009-2010 and also rose in value by nearly 35 percent to over $600 million from April 2011 to the end of March 2012, but this was a period when India's overall rice export earnings almost doubled in value globally.

Dubai's role in the India-Iran rice trade has withered since oil pool payments started.

From April 2011 to the end of March 2012, $821 million of Indian rice was shipped to the United Arab Emirates, more than anywhere else. But in just nine months from April to December last year Iran imported over $725 million of Indian rice, up 20 percent on the previous 12 months, while Indian exports to the UAE slumped to $287 million, official figures show.

There is effectively no limit to how much Indian rice exports to Iran can be funded by the oil money pool, because even when India's oil imports from Iran fell more than 40 percent from January 2012 to 2013, their value was still nearly $1 billion in one month.

"The new payment mechanism has been helping Indian rice exporters. Competitors in Pakistan don't have any such facility," M P Jindal, president of the All India Rice Millers Association said.

Raspberry supplement may help you lose weight

Raspberry ketones can help you lose weight and boost levels of a metabolism-regulating hormone, a report has claimed.

Raspberry ketones are fragrant compounds that occur naturally in raspberries and other fruits. The compounds can boost levels of adiponectin hormone, which regulates metabolism. Higher levels of this hormone are associated with fewer fat stores, the Daily Mail reported.

The ketones are normally used to give a fruity smell to cosmetics and foodstuffs but, because you only get between one and four milligram from every kilo of fresh fruit, a synthetic version is often used to get the same result.

And now these ketones are being sold online, in supplement form, as a slimming aid, the report said.

Millions of Americans have become convinced of powers of raspberry ketones to ‘melt’ away fat after they were recommended by Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

He said raspberry ketones are ‘the number-one miracle in a bottle to burn your fat’.

However, Ann Ashworth, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, urges caution, pointing out that the only published research into the effects of raspberry ketones on weight loss is small studies on mice.

“Although this sounds very exciting, this evidence cannot be transferred to humans without further clinical trials,” she said.

Gujarati curtailed in new UPSC examination pattern

AHMEDABAD: Thousands of Gujarati students aspiring to join the elite central services are upset with the new pattern and the changes in the exam announced by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Tuesday. They believe the move will affect their chances of making it to the final list.

It was largely due to the weightage of Gujarati language, that as many as 55 candidates could clear the exams in the last five yearss. The changed rules will close down linguistic concessions offered by the UPSC to all vernacular language including Gujarati. The new pattern is also expected to reverse the trend in the overall selection process.

Aspirants say the move is a violation of their fundamental right of equality and expression. According to the new exam pattern, if an aspirant's medium of instruction at graduation level is not Gujarati, he shall not be allowed to write exams in Gujarati.

Among the major changes to be introduced this year are an English language paper, the score of which will be taken into account in the final selection for top jobs. Earlier, candidates had to qualify in English and another language paper.

But, the score in these two language papers was counted for the short-listing . Another restrictive provision is that a Gujarati candidate cannot opt for Gujarati literature as optional subject, if the candidate has not graduated in it.

Another ambiguity is that UPSC has notified that the commission will have the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all papers of examination. This indicates that if a Gujarati student does well in all the papers, but fails to score minimum marks in English paper, his selection into the merit list would be impossible .

Unlike the earlier pattern, which often favoured aspirants with subject knowledge, the UPSC has now introduced four general studies papers of 250 marks each instead of two papers of 300 marks each. The general studies papers will carry 1,000 marks henceforth.

Besides, there will be two optional papers of 250 marks each instead of four papers of 300 marks each earlier. The weightage on the optional papers will also be reduced from 1,200 to 500 marks. The total marks for the main exam will be 1,800.

India's new opening pair gears up to face the test

MUMBAI: India began their 'home run' this season on the back of retirements of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. And with two Tests to go before it concludes, they are without Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir too. Both, ultimately, paid the price for having gradually lost form over a period of time.

While MS Dhoni and Co seem to have found the replacements for stalwarts like Dravid and Laxman, do they have the back-up to replace what was a successful opening pair? Do they have it in them to shut the door on Sehwag and Gambhir for good, or will they make us miss them all the more? Can they justify the selectors' faith in their abilities, and more importantly, justify their decision to axe both Gambhir and Sehwag? The answers will lie in the quality of the replacements.

Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane have all shown the spark at some time or the other to come good. If you want to peep more into the future, there is Unmukt Chand, who led the India U-19 team to a World Cup triumph with a magnificent hundred in the final, and recently hit a ton in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final.

Vijay, in fact, now has two hundreds against Australia in Test cricket. With India 2-0 up against the Aussies, most experts agree this is the ideal time to try out the next generation of India's openers. "You tried Pujara in Dravid's place, and he scored two double hundreds and almost a 1000 runs in his first 11 Tests. You have to build a team like that," says former India batsman Pravin Amre.

Former India coach Lalchand Rajput believes this is the chance for those waiting in the wings to seal their spots. "Consistency will be the key for them," Rajput says. Former India opener WV Raman too lauds the selectors for 'having an eye on the future.' "You can go back to that favourite line that experience matters, but it is better to try these youngsters now, then abroad," he stresses.

Vijay's 167 at Hyderabad, in particular, offers plenty of hope. "Vijay is a good timer of the ball. If he gets his cover drive going, and shows his full face of the bat, you know he is in a good nick. I loved the way he batted in Hyderabad. He took his own time to get set. Even Pujara was outscoring him, but it didn't ruffle him," says Amre. "I liked the way he changed his approach once he realised that he was playing for his place," compliments Raman.

The same Vijay, however, managed just 72 runs in six innings on the Windies tour in 2011-12. However, Virat Kohli failed on that tour but bounced back in Australia later. Vijay will hope for similar luck on the SA tour.

Dhawan could make his Test debut as soon as the Mohali Test against the Aussies, and it will be interesting to see whether he makes use of the long-awaited opportunity. "He is a fluent batsman and offers the advantage of a left-right combo at the top," says Amre. "Both Vijay and Dhawan must continue to bat naturally," feels Raman.

Many feel that Ajinkya Rahane can turn out to be a successful opener too. "He has the technique and temperament for Test cricket. He has batted at No. 3 and must try to play as an opener," says Rajput. "He should, and will do, whatever the team demands. He has that experience of facing the new ball," says Amre.

An era may just have ended. They must wait for another to begin.

Mere Dad Ki Maruti

Mere Dad Ki Maruti

Movie Name :   Mere Dad Ki Maruti
Release Date :   15 March 2013

Genre :  Comedy, Drama

Producer : Ashish Patil
Director :   Ashima Chibber

Music Director :  Sachin Gupta
Cast : Saqib Saleem, Rhea Chakraborty, Ram Kapoor, Prabal Panjabi, Ravi Kishan.

Synopsis:

Y-Films are ready with their latest release Mere Dad Ki Maruti, which stars Saqib Saleem and Rhea Chakraborthy, with Ram Kapoor as the Dad. It looks to be a fun caper during the wedding season in Chandigarh where the Maruti goes missing and it is up to Saleem to get it back. The album is expected to be the baap of all music albums, with Sachin Gupta at the helm and Panjabi MC making a guest appearance with his song ‘Haay’. The album is unabashedly entertaining and there’s not a dull moment throughout these tracks. Sachin Gupta has created an album that works with the young-theme and managed to do something new with the stock Bhangra numbers that we often here.
I was immediately excited from the initial trailer to hear the full, Punjabiyan Di Battery, and it’s a funky track that launches you on the dance floor from the opening tumbhi strands. Honey Singh chimes in with his safer rap verses, and then the real star of the show emerges – Mika. This is a much better song where Mika can show off his vocal prowess and some of the usual swagger. It’s a real feat to have Singh and Mika on the same track and they don’t sound like they are trying to outdo each other too much. The arrangements are fabulous, and the tempo keeps the party going right until the bridge where it speeds up. Kumaar’s lyrics are quirky and celebrate all that Punjabi spirit which is complemented by Mika and Honey Singh’s vocals. Keep this on your most played list.

the names of all continents both start and end with the same letter.

INSPIRING STORY "

  The Smell of Rain

A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the Doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. Still groggy from surgery, her husband David held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon of March 10,1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24 weeks pregnant, to Danae Lu Blessing.

At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound and nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor’s soft words dropped like bombs. I don’t think she’s going to make it, he said, as kindly as he could. “There’s only a 10 percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one.”

Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Danae would likely face if she survived. She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probably be blind, and she would certainly be prone to other catastrophic conditions from cerebral palsy to complete mental retardation, and on and on.

“No! No!” was all Diana could say. She and David, with their 5-year-old son Dustin, had long dreamed of the day they would have a daughter to become a family of four. Now, within a matter of hours, that dream was slipping away.

Through the dark hours of morning as Danae held onto life by the thinnest thread, Diana slipped in and out of sleep, growing more and more determined that their tiny daughter would live, and live to be a healthy, happy young girl. But David, fully awake and listening to additional dire details of their daughter’s chances of ever leaving the hospital alive, much less healthy, knew he must confront his wife with the inevitable.

David walked in and said that we needed to talk about making funeral arrangements. Diana remembers, ‘I felt so bad for him because he was doing everything, trying to include me in what was going on, but I just wouldn’t listen, I couldn’t listen.

As if willed to live by Diana’s determination, Danae clung to life hour after hour, with the help of every medical machine and marvel her miniature body could endure. But as those first days passed, a new agony set in for David and Diana.

Because Danae’s under-developed nervous system was essentially raw, the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so they couldn’t even cradle their tiny baby girl against their chests to offer the strength of their love. All they could do, as Danae struggled alone beneath the ultraviolet light in the tangle of tubes and wires, was to pray that God would stay close to their precious little girl. There was never a moment when Danae suddenly grew stronger.

But as the weeks went by, she did slowly gain an ounce of weight here and an ounce of strength there. At last, when Danae turned two months old, her parents were able to hold her in their arms for the very first time. And two months later-though doctors continued to gently but grimly warn that her chances of surviving, much less living any kind of normal life, were next to zero. Danae went home from the hospital, just as her mother had predicted.

Today, five years later, Danae is a petite but feisty young girl with glittering gray eyes and an unquenchable zest for life. She shows no signs, what so ever, of any mental or physical impairment. Simply, she is everything a little girl can be and more-but that happy ending is far from the end of her story.
