Mercedes launches Sports Tourer B-Class in sub-Rs 25 lakh segment

German luxury car-maker Mercedes, which on Tuesday entered the Rs 25-lakh premium segment by launching the B-Class, said it expects a flat growth in the luxury car segment this year as the past eight months have not been encouraging.

"The growth in the luxury car segment has been flat in the first eight month of the year. We sold around 7,500 units last calendar year and this year too we are likely to end up with the same numbers," Mercedes Benz India sales and marketing director Debashis Mitra said.

He was talking to reporters after launching its first under Rs 25 lakh model, the B-Class Sports Tourers.

The German auto major has priced the petrol variants of the B-Class -- B 180 and B 180 Sport -- in the Rs 21.49-24.87 lakh (ex-showroom price Mumbai) range.

At present, the luxury car market stands at 25,000 units per annum but is expected to touch 2.5 lakh units by 2020. Out of this, Mercedes commands 23 per cent market share currently.

Mitra, however, said the recently announced measures to perk up the economy may change the situation a bit adding the luxe car market is all about sentiment.

He said the premium segment or the Rs 25-30 lakh segment has, however, clocked good growth and the segment has seen competition too.

According to Mitra, the company will start assembling its M-Class range from October at its Pune plant which will be followed by GL-Class from next year.

Besides, the B-Class assembly may also commence from end 2013, he said.

MTS CDMA dongles to come with GSM slot for International roaming

Though the dongles will work only with MTS connection in India, one can use the GSM slot in case of international roaming.

MTS is planning to launch a CDMA dongle and a MiFi device with inbuilt GSM SIM slot which can be used when roaming outside the country and are aimed at high profile globetrotting customers.

The GSM slot can only be used outside India, and MTS will provide what it calls a 'GSM Globetrotter' SIM card to its subscribers for the purpose.

The users will benefit from low rates while roaming if they use this GSM SIM from MTS. According to MTS, while others charge Rs 5.5 per 10 KB, its users will pay only Rs 2.99 per 10 KB.

The dongle and MiFi devices will also work on CDMA network on roaming if the country being visited has such a network.

The MiFi device will have its own battery and won't need to be connected to any other device, and will create a WiFi Hotspot that can be connected to up to five devices including tablets, smartphones and laptops.

According to MTS, it provides coverage in more than 230 countries and 420 networks through its international roaming partners.

Though price or availability details of the devices are not known right now but it is expected to get available by October and the cost will be marginally higher than the dongles already available in the market.

Yamaha Ray: First Ride

With the launch of the new Ray, Yamaha hasn't merely filled up a few blank spaces in its two wheeler arsenal for the Indian market, but rather engineered a product that despite its primary motive of catering to the country's growing female rider population, should immediately see mass appeal. On a recent test ride in Hyderabad, Rahul Basu got thinking while craftily circling cones on this purple pastel scooter.

It closely resembles the most dashing looking moto scooter on sale in the market today, and yet it seeks to satisfy a very different kind of customer. Call it plain old chivalry or clever product strategy Yamaha India has created what it is convinced will be a new ‘Ray’ of hope for enthusiastic female scooter riders in the country.

Priced at Rs 46,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) the country’s first ever scooter offering from Team Yamaha, namely the Ray is here to squeeze itself into a two wheeler category which isn’t just expanding heavily in sales and volume, but is simultaneously maturing across verticals, be it design, overall efficiency or just clean and simple practical motoring.

However, given the direction that Yamaha has taken with regards to conceiving the Ray and perfecting it for production in the months that followed the unveiling of the first concept at the AutoExpo in January this year, it must be said that the final outcome is a noteworthy one.

For those who have already begun comparing this new face with the current generation Honda Dio it’s seriously time to stop. Yamaha may be among the late comers in the Indian scooter segment, but isn’t exactly new to the small moped/scooter business globally and a quick glance at its Mio Ultimo and the likes family of commuters selling across Southeast Asia for almost a decade now will better explain the inspiration behind the V-shaped headlights that we absolutely adore on the new Yamaha Ray.

Unlike larger-bodied scooter models now present in significant numbers, the Ray settled for a rather leaner and well sculpted body frame (1835x675x1075mm) that isn’t necessarily feminine in its overall demeanour.

The Purple-pastel dual-tone version we rode might have more feminine appeal, but there are five other even cooler shades to pick from. We found the Blue-gray two-tone job rather dashing and this will likely be the shade of choice for strapping young lads, but the classy Burgundy Bliss was my personal favourite.

In fact, the matte-gray (or matte-black in half the colour options) lower panel contrasts beautifully with the high-quality gloss finish of the primary body panels, and really does deserve a special mention. That apart, the inclusion of a telescopic front suspension, sizeable grab bars and a hip stopper for pillion riders, not to mention the rather unconventional yet stylish tail lamp assembly with clear-lens indicators are all very neat touches to this very female focused scooter architecture. Can’t think of a good reason why their male counterparts would desire to settle for anything lesser.

Maruti Suzuki likely to introduce the CNG model of new Alto 800

Considering hike in the prices of petrol and diesel, industry experts believe that the largest car maker of the country, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), will offer a CNG fuel option with its new Alto 800. The fuel price hike has affected the sales of several car makers and thus, MSIL is not expected to join the list.

With the passing of each day, the launch of Alto 800 is coming closer and therefore, a lot of speculations and rumours are revolving around the launch stand of the model. Believed to be a ‘People’s Car’, MSIL has pinned high expectations with its upcoming model, which will efficiently square off against the likes of Hyundai Eon and Tata Nano.

Reportedly, the introduction of a CNG model in Alto 800's line-up is quite necessary for pacing up the sales as the car maker just delivered 17,500 units in July 2012 against the 24,000 units sold in corresponding period last year. Interestingly, the sales of Alto were overtaken by Swift hatchback in April 2012 and thus, it became the highest selling model of the country for the period. Sources close to development process stated that the CNG model of Alto 800 will be around Rs. 25000 costlier than the regular model.

LG Electronics has unveiled a flagship smartphone as it moves to regain ground lost in the competitive market to rivals including Samsung Electronics and Apple.

The Optimus G will go on sale next week in the South Korean mobile phone maker’s home market for Won1m ($900) before being rolled out in Japan in October and other foreign markets in November.

The company expects “meaningful” sales figures from the device, which boasts the industry’s best hardware features, Park Jong-seok, president of LG’s mobile phone division, told reporters on Tuesday.

LG is sticking to its sales goal of 35m smartphones this year in spite of so far having achieved only about 30 per cent of the target. “We expect sales to increase from the third quarter thanks to the full-on impact of new products,” Mr Park said.

The Optimus G, which has a 4.7-inch screen, runs on Google’s Android operating system and is powered by Qualcomm’s quad-core processor. It offers faster internet connections and will enable the use of multiple functions simultaneously.

Analysts expect its main rivals to be Motorola’s Droid Razr, the first model the company has unveiled since being acquired by Google, and Nokia’s flagship Lumia 920, which runs on the latest Windows Phone operating system.

LG is pinning its hopes on its strength in next-generation LTE technology for its fightback in the fast-changing smartphone market.

The company was late to the game, and was the eighth-largest smartphone maker as of the second quarter with just a 5.8 per cent global market share, according to Daishin Securities. That is far behind rivals such as Samsung, with 34.6 per cent, and Apple, which has 17.8 per cent of the market, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics.

Analysts expect that LG will sell 26m-27m smartphones this year. The Optimus G will contribute to an estimated 10.6 per cent year-on-year increase in fourth-quarter revenue at LG’s handset business, according to Dongbu Securities. LG’s mobile division recorded an operating loss of $49.5m in the second quarter, its fifth loss in the past seven quarters, as revenue dropped by an annual 28.6 per cent.

LG shares edged up 0.79 per cent to Won76,300 on Tuesday, but hopes for a turnround in its mobile business have lifted them 20 per cent over the past three months. The benchmark Kospi index has risen 7.8 per cent over that period.

Apple shares zoom above $700 on iPhone 5 mania

Apple booked orders for over two million iPhone 5 models in the first 24 hours, reflecting a higher-than-expected demand for the consumer device giant’s new smartphone and setting it up for a strong holiday quarter.

Apple shares rose in extended after-market trading to touch $700 per share for the first time. They have gained nearly 22 percent in the past 3-1/2 months in the build-up to the launch of the iPhone 5.

Apple said on Monday that pre-orders outstripped initial supply but it would deliver most phones as planned by Friday, the first day of delivery. Many would not be available until October, however.

It is not unusual for Apple products to sell out the first day but this time around Apple has doubled its first-day sales record. Last October, the company booked 1 million orders for the iPhone 4S, in the first 24 hours. That had beaten Apple’s previous one-day record of 600,000 sales for the iPhone 4.

The strong preorders could mean a huge holiday quarter for Apple as the iPhone —its marquee device —accounts for half of Apple’s revenue.

Apple will make initial deliveries of the iPhone 5 by September 21 in the United States and most of the major European markets, such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The phone then goes on sale on September 28 in 22 other countries.

Given the demand for the device so far and Apple’s aggressive rollout of it internationally, some analysts raised their sales and earnings estimates.

“The pace of this iPhone 5 roll-out is the fastest in the iPhone’s history and points to a big December quarter,” said Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes, who expects Apple to sell 45.21 million iPhones in the December quarter, up 22 percent from last year. Reitzes said his estimates “could still be conservative.”

Tips to make your browser secure

MUNICH: Web browsers are the key to the internet. Without them the internet is an impenetrable black box.

Browsers may be among the most commonly used applications, but they also offer the greatest number of attack options for dangerous content on the net.To keep viruses, worms and other malware away from your computer when surfing,it's crucial to configure your browser for security.

The firewall on a DSL router is a good first step for protecting the computer during surfing, says Marco Rinne from the computer portal chip.de. But that doesn't hold true if your browser is out of date: “Internet Explorer 6 and 7 or Firefox 2 no longer satisfy current security standards,” he says. For optimal protection, he therefore urgesusers to keep theirbrowsers updated.

There are numeroussecurity tools already present in Firefox and Internet Explorer. The pop-up blocker, for example, prevents more than justannoying ads. It alsothrottles other windows that can be used to sneak malicious software onto PCs. Phishing filters protect personal dataagainst theft.

Firefox offers additional configurationoptions underthe Settings item in the Security tab of the Options dialog box: thisincludes the ability to block risky or forgedwebsites. It's also a good idea to prohibit websites from installing add-ons on their own. Similar settings are possible under Internet Explorer in the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box, accessible from the Tools menu.

Computer owners should also activate all options for warning against attacks, advises Markus Linnemann, managing director of the Institute for Internet Security (ifis) at the Polytechnic University of Gelsenkirchen in Germany. This applies in particular to warnings about suspicious content to be displayed using ActiveX, Flash, or JavaScript.

Yet the warning mechanism on most browsers alone isn't usually enough, Linnemann says. Those who wish to be especially careful can, for example, use the Firefox add-on 'No Script,' which blocks all active content of a website by default and allows the user to decide which should be permitted. The problem is that most users are unable to determine   which content represents a threat to their computer, Rinne msays.

German govt urges public to stop using Internet Explorer

The German government urged the public on Tuesday to temporarily stop using Microsoft Corp's Internet Explorer following discovery of yet-to-be repaired bug in the web browser that the software maker said makes PCs vulnerable to attack by hackers.

The security flaw, which affects hundreds of millions of Internet Explorer browser users around the globe, publicly surfaced over the weekend.

Microsoft had said on Monday that attackers can exploit the bug to infect the PC of somebody who visits a malicious website and then take control of the victim's computer.
