Aseem Trivedi accepts bail, to be released

Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, in custody on sedition charges, agreed to accept bail late on Tuesday night after Maharashtra Home Minster R.R. Patil’s assurance that he would examine the case against him, and also respecting the views of the Bombay High Court, according to a statement by India Against Corruption (IAC) spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon.
Mr. Trivedi will be released from the Arthur Road Jail on Wednesday.
Earlier, he had refused to accept bail granted by the High Court till the charges of sedition were dropped.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice N.M. Jamdar passed the interim order on a public interest litigation petition.
“In the facts and circumstances of the case, by this ad-interim order, we direct that Mr. Aseem Trivedi be released on bail on his executing a personal bond for a sum of Rs. 5,000,” the order said.
The plea sought Mr. Trivedi’s unconditional release and the quashing of the charge of sedition as “unjustified.”
It also called upon the court to declare his arrest and detention “illegal and bad in law.”
The court will hear arguments on the plea on Friday. Additional Public Prosecutor Poornima Kantharia told the court that she awaited instructions from the police and the State.
However, the officials concerned were in a meeting with the Chief Minister. She argued that Mr. Trivedi had the option of moving bail in the magistrate court, which he refused to exercise.
However, even as it posted the matter to Friday, the court passed the interim order of release.
Kejriwal warns of agitation
Earlier in the day, IAC member Arvind Kejriwal warned of an agitation before the Arthur Road jail, if the charge of sedition was not dropped by Friday.
Mr. Kejriwal met the Kanpur-based cartoonist in the jail on Tuesday morning along with other members of IAC.
“[By] Friday, the charge of sedition against him should be dropped. Else, we will sit right here outside the jail itself in protest. It is the MPs who disrespect the national emblems by indulging in corruption. It is they who should be booked for sedition,” Mr. Kejriwal said after meeting the cartoonist.
Mr. Trivedi’s friend Alok Dixit, who went inside the prison with Mr. Kejriwal, said the cartoonist stood firm on his stand.

High demand puts Dost ramp-up on fast-track

Ashok Leyland is progressively ramping up production of Dost, the light commercial vehicle it launched a year ago in association with Nissan, as the customer response has been very encouraging, and there is a need to take the LCV to more States across the country.
From September 2011 to last month, 20,479 units of Dost were sold, and in the eight States where it is available, the LCV is the market leader reinforcing the decision of the manufacturer to become a segment-splitter.
“We have been fortunate that we have hit the bull’s eye,” Ashok Leyland Vice-Chairman V. Sumantran said about the decision of the company to be in the 2-3.5 tonne segment.
The rate of growth in the sub-1 tonne LCV market, which was impressive when the decision on foray into LCV was being taken, has flattened, and the class above that is taking over.
“We wanted to set standards… power steering and air-conditioning provided a new experience in LCVs,” explained Dr. Sumantran, who is also Chairman of Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain Ltd.
Ashok Leyland’s Executive Director-LCV Nitin Seth said from 200 vehicles a month at the time of launch, the production of Dost had increased to 2,800. The ramp-up, at the Ashok Leyland plant in Hosur, is expected to attain the capacity of 55,000 in the second year.
As Dost drives into new markets – Madhya Pradesh, National Capital Region and Uttar Pradesh in the next stage, the number of customer touch-points would nearly double from the present 45.
The senior executives were addressing a press meet here on Tuesday to announce the launch of a limited 1 anniversary edition of Dost.
The special edition, with some specially-designed accessories such as bull bars, fuel tank guards, LED lights and arm rests, according to Mr. Seth, would be available for two months in the eight States. It has been priced at Rs.4.78 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai), about Rs.57, 000 more than the price of the existing model.
Dr. Sumantran said though the deceleration of the economy and declining freight rates were a cause of concern, the LCV segment was better insulated against such downtrend as the rural economy remained strong.
The joint venture, he added, was setting up a plant at Pillaipakkam, near Sriperumbudur, and it would be ready in two and a half years.

Allahabad HC tells UP govt to publish advt for appointment of teachers
ALLAHABAD: Taking a serious note of "acute shortage of qualified teachers" in primary schools across Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad high court on Tuesday directed the state government to publish an advertisement for appointment of the same without any further delay.
The order was passed by Justice Arun Tandon on a writ petition filed by one Shiv Prakash Kushwaha who had alleged that appointment of teachers in Parishadiya Vidyalayas (primary schools) has been withheld for long.
As per the "Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, it has become mandatory for the state government to ensure that the requisite number of qualified teachers are appointed in all institutions," the petitioner said.
The petitioner's submission was disputed by the state's Additional Advocate General C B Yadav who said recruitment was held in 2004, 2007 and 2008.
However, the court observed "it is not in dispute that there is acute shortage of qualified teachers in Parishidiya Vidyalayas as on date, it is but natural that education shall suffer."
"The court feels it just and proper to insist upon the state government to publish an advertisement for appointment of qualified teachers in Parishidiya Vidyalayas without any further delay," the Judge said. The court fixed September 27 as the next date of hearing.

Volleyballer Arunima Sinha who lost leg climbs 21,000ft
JAMSHEDPUR: A national-level volleyball player who lost her left leg after being thrown out of a moving train in Bareilly in April last year doesn't appear to have lost her spirit and determination. Arunima Sinha has scaled Chamser Kangri mountain in Ladakh, becoming an inspiration for differently-abled sportspeople.
The 24-year-old climbed 21,110 feet with three other teammates on September 3 after training for months with Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to conquer Mt Everest.
"Incessant rain, snowfall and poor light prevented me from climbing another 600ft to reach the peak of Chamser Kangri but I successfully scaled 21,110ft which no other disabled woman has climbed so far in history," said Arunima speaking over phone from Lucknow on her way to Jamshedpur on Tuesday.
Bachendri Pal said she was awed by Arunima's passion and perseverance. "She is a spirited girl and I am sure if she continues in this manner, she will soon climb Mt Everest," said Pal who accompanied Arunima to the base camp on her expedition to Kangri peak.
"I have not come across any person, particularly a woman, who has scaled 21,000ft with artificial limbs," said Pal, the chief of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, (TSAF).
Arunima was pushed out of the general compartment of a moving Padmawati Express for resisting a chain-snatching attempt by some hoodlums, while travelling from Lucknow to Delhi on April 12, 2011. She was hit by a passing train and was seriously injured. She was hospitalized with serious leg and pelvic injuries and in a bid to save her life, doctors had to amputate her left leg below the knee. Arunima joined the TSAF-run training camp in Uttarkashi early this year. .
"My ultimate aim is to scale Mt Everest and I will do it one day. I look forward to the guidance of 'madam' for my dream expedition," said Arunima who did her basic course in mountaineering from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi.

" INSPIRING STORY "
Great people are always humble
Lord Raama, the paramaathma, was ofcourse the greatest warrior ever. Lord Krishna in Bhagavadgita remarks “I am Raama among warriors”. He learnt all the Shastras and unparalled Dhanurvidya under the guidance of the great Vasishtha. He was also given super-human powers like bala, ati bala by the great Vishwamithra, the Rishi of Gayathri manthra. Vishwamithra maharshi also taught him all the secret astras that ever existed, which only he in this whole universe knew (he originally learnt it from Lord Shiva). In addition to these, Agasthya mahamuni gave him many additional powers.A few glimpses of Lord Raama’s valour:
With one arrow Raama kills taataki, the mighty raakshasi. With two simultaneous arrows he kills subaahu and throws Maaricha seven seas away. Effortlessly lifts the Shiva dhanush, which was pulled to the court by around 50000 well built people. Raama kills Khara, Dhushana, their 1000 brothers and their army in 14 minutes single handed.
Despite being such a great warrior, he never displayed in strength on his own to show others. The anger on the samudra stands as a good example for this quality of Raama:
Raavana gives 30 days time to sita maata to decide if she will marry him, else will kill her. Bharata took word from Raama saying that if he does’nt return on the next moment of 14 yrs of aranyavaas, then he will sacrifice himself. Raama and his army reaches the shores of ocean with barely 30 days in hand. They have to cross the ocean, defeat Ravana & his army, take sita back to ayodhya in around 30 days time. With such a press for time and given the strength of Raama, Lakshmana suggests Raama not to spend time asking ocean God for way, but to order him.
What Raama does is unbelievable. Though he had the strength and power to control the ocean God, he did not do it. He did penance on the shores of the ocean for 3 long days to give them a way. Finally after 3 days Raama gets angry on the ocean and to make remember his duty, aims an astra at him and immediately ocean God appears and suggests a way of crossing him…
