Amazon, in switch, will let Kindle users pay to opt out of ads
|
|

Amazon.com, in an apparent switch in its pricing policy, said over the weekend that it will allow purchasers of its new Kindle Fire tablets to pay $15 extra to turn off advertisements that are built into the devices.
The change came barely a day after Amazon on Thursday unveiled larger Kindle Fire tablets, priced from $159 to $599, to challenge Apple Inc's dominant iPad on price and additional digital content.
Amazon had said the tablets would come with ads known as "special offers" that appear when screens are locked and in the corner of the home screen, helping keep prices low. But criticism of the company mounted in online forums after reports that the company would not allow buyers to pay to block the ads as it had done with earlier tablets.
By Saturday web sites engadget.com and cnet.com were reporting that Amazon had changed its policy.
In an email response to questions from Reuters, Amazon spokesman Kinley Pearsall said only: "With Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD there will be a special offers opt-out option for $15. We know from our Kindle reader line that customers love our special offers and very few people choose to opt out. We're happy to offer customers the choice."
Amazon unveiled the new wireless tablets without having received approval for their sale from the Federal Communications Commission, which requires that products operate safely and won't interfere with other signals. The company said it expects to receive the approval in time to meet its planned shipping date of November 20.

Google Snaps Up Security Firm VirusTotal

The search engine leader Google shores up security credentials with the acquisition of malware detection specialist VirusTotal.
Search engine giant Google continued its efforts to bolster security credentials with the acquisition of VirusTotal, which provides a free service analyzing suspicious files and URLs and helps detect viruses, worms, Trojans and other malware. The announcement was made via a VirusTotal blog post, which expressed excitement about the deal and reiterated its dedication to keeping computers from threats.
“We’re delighted that Google, a long-time partner, has acquired VirusTotal. This is great news for you, and bad news for malware generators, because: The quality and power of our malware research tools will keep improving, most likely faster; and Google’s infrastructure will ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them,” the blog post reported. “This is an exciting step forward. Google has a long track record working to keep people safe online and we look forward to fighting the good fight together with them.”
The announcement also explained VirusTotal would continue to operate independently and would maintain partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. The platform acts as an information aggregator, which accrues the output of different antivirus engines, Website scanners, file and URL analysis tools and user contributions. The malware signatures of antivirus solutions present in VirusTotal are periodically updated as they are developed and distributed by the antivirus companies.

Telecom user base declines for first time
|
|
NEW DELHI: Telecom subscriber base fell to 944.81 million in July from 965.52 million a month ago, the first ever decline in the country.
The subscriber base report for the month of July released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) shows that overall telecom user base of the country dropped by 20.71 million subscribers over June.
"This is the first time we have seen decline in overall subscriber base," a Trai official told .
The decline in total subscriber base for the first time was led by the wireless segment where users declined by 20.61 million.
The biggest loss in user base came from Reliance Communications that lost 20.48 million users, followed by Tata Teleservices, Uninor, Videocon, Loop and MTNL.
RCom said the drop is due to removal of inactive customers from its user base.
"With an objective to release the substantial blocked resources of number series and in context of DoT's stringent guidelines on issuance of fresh numbers, RCom has decided to deactivate the inactive prepaid subscribers who have not had any usage in the last 60 days," a RCom spokesperson said.
The total subscriber base of RCom declined to around 134 million in July from over 154 million in June.
Tata Teleservices lost over 2.4 million wireless customers, Uninor lost over 1 million subscribers, Videocon 0.41 million, Loop Mobile and state-run MTNL each lost around 0.15 million subcribers in July.
No immediate comments from these companies were received.
Bharti Airtel, however, lead the growth in mobile subscribers in July by adding over 1.5 million new customers, taking its total subscriber base to over 188 million.
Vodafone added over 1.2 million users, taking its total subscriber base to over 154 million. Idea Cellular, Aircel, Sistema Shyam and HFCL added 0.45 million, 0.28 million, 0.16 milion, and 23,000 new users respectively in July. State-run BSNL added 0.47 million subscribers in July.

Nokia Again Apologizes Over Ads For Phone
|
|

Nokia Corp. expanded its apology for using misleading marketing materials for a new line of phones.
The company last week acknowledged that it didn't use the PureView camera of its forthcoming Lumia 920 to shoot a portion of a video used in promotional material for the phone. The company on Saturday said other pieces of the marketing material, such as still photography, also were simulated.
In both cases, Nokia was called out by independent blogs for not having disclosed that the images weren't captured by a Lumia.
Nokia used a hand-held video camera and lighting rig rather than the Lumia to create the material in question. Then it used that material as evidence that the technology in its new phones, set to go on sale this year, was superior to competitors' technology already on the market.
Nokia's initial failure to fully represent how it shot the images deals a blow to the company's credibility when it is struggling to regain its footing in the global smartphone market. Nokia was once the dominant player in mobile handsets but has been hit hard by the success of Apple Inc., AAPL +0.62% Samsung Electronics Co. 005930.SE +4.52% and others.
Nokia introduced its new phones, which use Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT -1.26% Windows 8 operating system, on Sept. 5 in New York following a move by Samsung in August to show off its own Windows 8 phone. Apple is expected to introduce its next iPhone on Wednesday.
Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop said that unlike Samsung's Windows 8 phone, Nokia's phone was functional. But the Finnish company didn't disclose the cost and release schedule for its new line, leading to criticism and a decline in the company's stock price.
The need to simulate the camera capabilities of the Lumia 920 rather than wait until the real technology was ready showed the urgency facing Nokia.
"Nokia recently apologized when it became clear that a video, which had been produced to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization, failed to make clear that it was a simulation only and not shot using the new PureView camera on the Nokia Lumia 920. This video was produced when the Nokia Lumia 920 was in preproduction," the company said. "While there was no intention to mislead, the failure to add a disclaimer to the video was obviously a mistake, and we apologize for the misunderstanding it did cause."

Microsoft banks on India's developer ecosystem to drive Windows Phone

NEW DELHI--Windows Phone made its India debut in October 2011, several months after its global launch, and faced challenges here where Google Android smartphones were capturing both market share as well as mindshare at a brisk rate.
However, Microsoft is banking on the developer ecosystem to help drive adoption.
In an interview with ZDNet, Harish Vaidyanathan, director of tech evangelism at Microsoft India, said eight months since the launch, he was happy with what they had seen in terms of the number of developers and apps.
"App developer concept is still evolving in India," he said. "The Indian software industry is services-focused, and so, to think of an idea and implement it is evolutionary."
"[We need] lots of imagination [and] being able to seek out latent need. It's not just about apps or Windows Phone, but building the ecosystem. We've just started to scratch the surface," Vaidyanathan added with cautious enthusiasm.
Microsoft ran a campaign, called I Unlock Joy, which encouraged developers to build and publish Windows Phone apps. Anyone who published three or more apps to the Windows Phone Marketplace was rewarded with a Windows Phone device.

How to prevent your Facebook account from duplication
|
|
New Delhi: With 50 million users within the country, and the numbers growing slow and steady, Facebook has a considerable user base in India. This brings the company many advantages from the corporate standpoint, and with the users too becuase social networking seems to be easier and more attractive than ever before. But along with the good, the bad also creeps along. Through various 3rd party applications, personal data of users are being stolen, often to replicate into fake profiles, to distribute malware, and other undesireable material via the social network. Hence, to prevent this from happening, here are a few handy tips:
Secure data aginst 3rd party apps
Though the ideal situation would be to not unveil too much of one's personal data online, but it for those who have content and data there, it makes sense to ensure how many 'permissions' has one granted to 3rd party apps, when they ask access to it for usage of the application. In order to keep a check on it, one could take a look at mypermissions.org. Without any persnal data, one could take a look at all the list permissions one has granted various 3rd party apps, and then also minitor the unwanted ones. If needed be, the inactive applications can be removed.Alternatives include Secure.Me, which have an extensive list of over 500,000 Facebook applications and the way they use personal data from users. This software also helps trace any kind of malware that may exist. PrivacyStore is another alternative which helps keep check on whether mobile devices are at risk of malwares and viruses should they be a part of a user's Facebook profile.
Use free security applicaions from Facebook
With over 900 million users, Facebook has tied up with the major virus and malware monitoring companies Microsoft, Mc'Fee, Trend Micro, Sophos and Symantec, that help users monitor whether they are under any cyber attack or not. Applications such as BitDefender SafeGo, Norton SafeWeb, and Defensio are some applications which are available on 6-month trials periods, and can also be reinstalled on one's profile later on.
Keep a tab on Facebook privacy settings
Even though web security is made possible by the various applications as mentioned, but one's privacy settings also need a close watch from time to time. It is recommended that users atleast be aware of what default privacy settings they have for the facebook profile. To check and edit the settings, go to tab labeled as ‘Account’ at the top right corner of your Facebook page and click ‘Privacy Settings.’ For starters, users can enable device detection from Account Settings. Click on Security and enable the feature that says “When a new mobile or computer logs into this account.” Check on ‘Send me an email’ option. This way, if an unrecognised device is used to access your account, user would be alerted on the registered email id. Also, always keep a check on the apps allowed to access to Facebook. User can remove unwanted apps from Facebook by clicking on Privacy Settings, and then selecting Apps option from where required settings can be edited.(With inputs from Business Standard)

Google Maps Makes Live Traffic & Navigation Updates
|
|
Search engine giant Google has added two new features to the Google Maps in India which are: live traffic updates and voice navigation. At the moment the traffic information through Google Maps is only available in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.
The voice navigation will allow the users turn-by-turn voice-guided driving directions via Google Maps Navigation (Beta). Actually Google maps navigation is an internet connected GPS system that allows the users to find any specific place by using the name or address via typing or speaking.
The live traffic update feature can be accessed from the PC and mobile devices including Android and iOS, whereas the voice navigation feature can be accessed anywhere in India on the Android. The voice navigation also allows the users to change the language to the Indian English locale from the phone settings in order to speak in the Indian accent.
In order to activate Google maps navigation, users have to go to Google maps and click on the Map and then click on the Navigation. At last click on Accept to Activate and you are all done.
At the moment there are several other companies who are offering voice navigation facilities using their own devices, so Google Maps (new features) might affect them because after all it is absolutely free.

Tips to make your browser secure
|
|

MUNICH: Web browsers are the key to the internet. Without them the internet is an impenetrable black box.
Browsers may be among the most commonly used applications, but they also offer the greatest number of attack options for dangerous content on the net.To keep viruses, worms and other malware away from your computer when surfing,it's crucial to configure your browser for security.
The firewall on a DSL router is a good first step for protecting the computer during surfing, says Marco Rinne from the computer portal chip.de. But that doesn't hold true if your browser is out of date: “Internet Explorer 6 and 7 or Firefox 2 no longer satisfy current security standards,” he says. For optimal protection, he therefore urgesusers to keep theirbrowsers updated.
There are numeroussecurity tools already present in Firefox and Internet Explorer. The pop-up blocker, for example, prevents more than justannoying ads. It alsothrottles other windows that can be used to sneak malicious software onto PCs. Phishing filters protect personal dataagainst theft.
Firefox offers additional configurationoptions underthe Settings item in the Security tab of the Options dialog box: thisincludes the ability to block risky or forgedwebsites. It's also a good idea to prohibit websites from installing add-ons on their own. Similar settings are possible under Internet Explorer in the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box, accessible from the Tools menu.
Computer owners should also activate all options for warning against attacks, advises Markus Linnemann, managing director of the Institute for Internet Security (ifis) at the Polytechnic University of Gelsenkirchen in Germany. This applies in particular to warnings about suspicious content to be displayed using ActiveX, Flash, or JavaScript.
Yet the warning mechanism on most browsers alone isn't usually enough, Linnemann says. Those who wish to be especially careful can, for example, use the Firefox add-on 'No Script,' which blocks all active content of a website by default and allows the user to decide which should be permitted. The problem is that most users are unable to determine which content represents a threat to their computer, Rinne msays.
