We gave away 20 extra runs: Parthiv

DC wicketkeeper-batsman says his team failed to convert another promising start

The Deccan Chargers, who were playing for the first time this season in Hyderabad, suffered yet another loss in IPL 2012. They crashed to a 25-run defeat against Kings XI Punjab. After allowing KXIP to post a mammoth 170 for five in 20 overs, some ordinary batting by the hosts cost them another game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.

iplt20.com caught up with DC’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Parthiv Patel, at the end of the match to get his views on the loss.

You were well placed with 70 for two after 10 overs. But those two wickets by David Hussey in the 11th over changed the course of the game.

It did. But that’s been the story so far for us in the tournament. We have been well placed around 10 to 15 overs, but haven’t done well after that.
We haven’t finished our games well, and it was the same today.

This was the first match at this venue. What did you make of this wicket?

It was pretty good initially, but it got uneven in the second innings. But you can’t blame it on the wicket. We gave away 20 runs more.

Praveen Kumar bowled exceptionally well up front for KXIP, but tell us something about Parvinder Awana – he knocked you over today.

He has been pretty good. He has got wickets in first-class as well this season. We have played against each other a few times and he has carried his form to the IPL.

How does the team keep itself motivated when you haven’t done really well in the tournament?

It’s tough. But I think management is doing a good job in keeping us together.

You are the specialist wicketkeeper in the side. Have you given any tips to Kumar Sangakkara?

No, no [Laughs]. Sanga [Sangakkara] has been giving me tips about keeping and it has been great learning from him. He is a legend of the game. Hopefully, I can implement those things next year as well.

Four more games left in the tournament for you. What is it that the team is looking to achieve?

Probably try and win all four games; that has to be the first thing. After that, [we need to] look to the next season.

Gilchrist may play against DC

Injured KXIP captain says his hamstring has progressed well over the last week

The Indian Premier League comes to the city of Hyderabad for the first time in 2012 as the Deccan Chargers get set to host Kings XI Punjab at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here in Uppal. Adam Gilchrist, who captains the Punjab franchise, has been unavailable in the past few matches because of a hamstring injury he sustained earlier in the tournament. While he said that his hamstring has progressed really well, the KXIP captain clarified that a final call would be taken only on the day of the game.

Excerpts:

On whether he will play tomorrow’s game:

Not sure. I’ve just had a really good workout. It’s [the hamstring] really progressed well over the last few days. The signs are positive, but we’ll see how it pulls up tomorrow and make a decision from there. The thing is that we have got four or five days until our next game after this one [and] so I guess there is a temptation to leave it one more [game] and have about a week’s recovery. But it felt pretty good, so I’ll see how it is tomorrow.

On playing his former team, the Deccan Chargers:

Same as any other game really – two points up for grabs. We got them [Deccan Chargers] back-to-back now. It’s a great cricket ground. I really enjoyed playing here previously. It’s a good challenge for us. Hopefully, we can play some more cricket that we were playing prior to our last game. It wasn’t a great performance by us [in the last game]. We’ve thought about that, and hopefully, we can turn that around tomorrow.

On Kings XI Punjab’s campaign this year, including a couple of last-ball losses:

It’s been symbolic of the tournament as a whole. Maybe Kolkata [Knight Riders] are a team that may feel that they have played pretty consistently all the way through. But the other teams have been up and down a little bit. It’s been a unique tournament in that regard and we’ve been no different. We haven’t strung more than two wins in a row and that’s what teams strive for, to get that third win, the fourth win and get that positive feeling around. We’ve played some good cricket and some not so good cricket. It’s been about searching for the consistent game really. We’ve showcased some young Indian players – Mandeep Singh and Nitin Saini to name a few. And Parvinder Awana has been terrific. It’s been positive in that regard.

On playing well in away games:

That’s four big games. Four real challenges against top opposition in what can be pretty intimidating stadiums. Hopefully, that holds us well prepared for another away game tomorrow. But I don’t quite see where the home-and-away theme comes from for us; on why it is better away and not at home. That’s just the way it has panned out.

On whether he has found it difficult watching the team from the sidelines:

Not difficult at all, surprisingly. I’ve felt very comfortable. I’m closer to the end of my career. I’ve enjoyed the deeper involvement from a coaching perspective and have really enjoyed watching the boys play.

On whether he has any point to prove playing against the Deccan Chargers:

No. Like I said, it’s just another game. It’s another two points up for grabs. I look forward to the challenge. It goes without saying that it’s wonderful to be back in Hyderabad. The people are so friendly, the hotel staff and everybody. That’s a nice touch. The fans were always supportive.

Hope to finish in top four: Shah

RR batsman says his team can still score enough points to make it to the playoffs

After holding the pole position in the initial phase of the tournament, the Rajasthan Royals are currently placed at No.7 in the points table. The Rahul Dravid-led team will take on the Kings XI Punjab, who they have beaten earlier this season. Strengthened by the inclusion of Shane Watson, RR will be keen to get back into the race for the top four spots in IPL 2012.

Excerpts from Owais Shah’s media interaction ahead of the KXIP match:

On RR losing their last few matches after starting off well

[...] Like you said, we started very well and last game was one of those where we played badly, but the game before that is the one that really hurt us. We really needed to win that game; the one against Delhi Daredevils in Jaipur. But it is one of those things where we didn’t have much luck in that game and we didn’t play very well against DD [in Delhi] and had back-to-back losses. [...] Twenty20 is such a game where you can play all the [good] cricket and still lose [...] But it is not too late. There is still plenty of [games in] the tournament left [to be played]. There is no one apart from Delhi [Daredevils], no other team that has pulled away from rest of the group; so all is not lost. We didn’t play very well in the last game, but we hope to change that starting from tomorrow, and hope we can pull enough wins together and finish in the top four.

On why most teams are in a tight race

I don’t know the reason. But typically [teams like] Mumbai [Indians] and Chennai [Super Kings] usually dominate; especially Chennai. But this year, those teams haven’t quite dominated like they normally do. [But] obviously Delhi [Daredevils] has. But this is a good thing for the tournament. There are still three places open for teams to qualify for the last four places. [...] it is a good thing because leading up to the last five or six games, there is still enough interest from all the other teams [...].

On his form

[...] The last game I didn’t do well. I played a poor shot. The game before that, I played one ball [...]. In the games before that, we played [Royal Challengers] Bangalore [...] and sometimes you got to take a chance when you are chasing. [...] Unfortunately, sometimes the chances that you take, the shot you play, don’t come off. [...] That’s Twenty20. You try to get the runs on the board, and I guess it is my job to play the explosive role. [Like] if I am playing with Rahul Dravid, his job is to play through and it is our job to go in and get in quickly and take shot. [...] I feel mentally I am in a very good space. I hope to put a score together and try and win RR a game. [...] That [winning] is more important for me then not scoring runs. [...]

On losing Kevon Cooper to injury

Kevon was unfortunate to be injured. We are all disappointed that he got injured, because it is always good for the team to be able to select when everyone is available. Every time he played, he did well. But we are lucky enough to have another very good all-rounder in Shane Watson [...]. We are disappointed in not having Cooper because he also added a lot of depth in our overseas group of players. [...] The main goal for the team right now is to start winning some games and get to the top four teams.

On whether not having a strong bowling line-up is adding pressure on the batting line-up

Every team has a strength and a weakness. [...] We have some international experience and our captain, Rahul Dravid. We have some good players, but don’t underestimate our bowlers. The kind of pitches we play on in India, I think are suited to our kind of bowling line-up; especially in Jaipur where you bowl wicket to wicket and slower balls, etc. [...] I don’t think it puts pressure on our batting. The batters always put their hands up if we fail. [...] It was poor performance in the last game, and we are hoping to put that right.

Team’s mood is amazing: Saini

KXIP batsman says management’s faith has brought out the best in youngsters

“Indian Premier League – Where talent meets opportunity.” Nitin Saini, the Kings XI Punjab wicketkeeper-batsman, knows the significance of these words. Drafted into the playing XI to replace the injured Adam Gilchrist, Saini failed to convert starts a couple of times. But the faith and the freedom afforded by the team management has finally paid off. Saini scored his first IPL fifty against the crack bowling attack of RCB to enable his team chase down a tricky 159.

The 23-year-old from Rohtak was beaming after his team’s four-wicket win as he said, “The mood has been just amazing. I cannot put it in words”. For his own performance, he credited his childhood hero and the mentor of KXIP, Adam Gilchrist in a chat with iplt20.com.

You’ve got many opportunities in this season. Are you happy to finally make it count?

Finally, I got some runs today. Initially, I got off to a good start in a couple of games, but missed on to the opportunities. Luckily, I got it today.

You can’t ask for a better mentor than Adam Gilchrest being a wicketkeeper-batsman yourself. How has he been helping you?

He is my favourite wicketkeeper-batsman. He has just been asking me to wait for my opportunities and telling me that things will fall in place for me. He just asked me to play my natural game and backed me completely, and I got the result.

You’re now giving him a tough competition to make it to the playing XI.

That’s not true. It’s very difficult to fill in his shoes. I am just trying to make my own place. He is irreplaceable, and we all know it.

Chasing a tricky target against a quality bowling attack like RCB, how did you pace your innings?

I have played a lot of games in this ground, so I know that everything is chaseable here if you play positively. It’s a very good wicket to bat on and we knew that we can chase this target down if we bat to our potential. Our top order got some runs and we managed to pull it through. We did collapse a bit in the later overs; but that’s just cricket.

Were you all biting your nails in the dugout when there was a flurry of run-outs?

Cricket is a crazy game and you never know from which situation you can go where. I was a bit scared; but that’s just cricket.

You and Mandeep Singh have been performing well this season. What is it that brings the best out of you?

It’s freedom as well as the motivation we get. We are replacing such good players that we can’t even think of replacing them if they are fit. It’s just a good opportunity to prove ourselves that in case we get a chance, we are there to play. It’s a good challenge for young players like us.

You have beaten top teams in their own backyard. How is the mood in the camp?

The mood has been just amazing. I cannot put it in words. This is the best season that KXIP is having. I hope we can carry on the way we are doing it.

Don’t you think there is still a long way to go after seeing the points table?

The table has been very balanced this year. You never know which team will make it through to the playoffs. It’s very tricky as well, so you can’t take any game lightly; and its good for the IPL.
